Teaching Aims The students can consolidate the key words and phrases, such as “cut down” , “in danger” and “things made of ivory”. Also, they are able to get the information about elephants in Thailand from the article. The students will be enabled to read the article with different reading strategies, such as skimming and scanning. And they can retell the article with the help of the mind map and discuss how to save the endangered animals. The students will be aware of the importance of protecting the elephants as well as other endangered animals -To love animals is to love ourselves.II. Teaching Key PointsHow to help the students read the article in a more effective way.III. Teaching Difficultiesa. How the students can retell the article with the help of the mind map; b. Teaching AidsA multi-media computer; the blackboard; Some pictures VI. Teaching Procedures Step 1. Lead-in (4mins) Create a situation that my best friend sent me an e-mail with some pictures in Thailand; Tell the students that what interests me most is the elephants; Play a video about elephants-They can do a lot of things; Ask students to talk about some things elephants can do and what they think of them. Step 2. Pre-reading Presentation (3 mins) Present the new words for students and then read them for two times. Step 3. While-reading Tasks (17 mins) Have students choose the best title for the article by listening to the recording ; Ask students to match the main ideas with each paragraph by scanning the article; Have students read the article carefully and fill in the mind map; Ask students retell the article with the help of the mind map(Divide the students into four groups and have a competition to answer the questions.) Step 4. Post-reading Activities (18 mins)Activity 1 Act as an elephant named Eric and play the video . Ask students why I am crying and how to save me. Students discuss and try to answer.Activity 2Divide the class into four big groups and each group gets a card with a picture and some information about one kind of the endangered animals. Then write a passage about saving other endangered animals. Show it on the stage.Activity 3 Continue calling on students love towards animals and take an action together.Step 5. Summary (2 mins) Key words and expressions; The reading strategies and the mind map; To love animals is to love ourselves.Step 6.
