8newbridge schoolgovernorsannual report2008 2009newbridge school: introduction by the chair of governorsdear parents / carers the governors of newbridge school are pleased to present the annual governors report to parents for the academic year 2008 -2009. the governing body is particularly proud in the academic year 2008-2009 of the schools outstanding inspection report following the schools inspection by estyn in october 2008. the school achieved six grades 1 and 1 grade 2, with the highest possible teaching grades awarded in any inspection across wales. these are outstanding achievements that illustrate the skills, hard work and professionalism of the staff at newbridge school. the governors take this opportunity to thank the headteacher for her leadership of the inspection and all staff for their hard work ensuring the schools success.i also thank all parents and carers who contributed to the inspection by giving your views about the school at the parents meeting with inspectors and in your questionnaire returns for the inspectors. the headteacher has followed the inspection with a detailed three year school development plan. this includes the recommendations made in the inspection report. progress in the development plan is given in this report. examination results continue to be excellent with results well above local and national averages. details are given at the end of the report. we are equally proud of the many other school achievements throughout the year. these were given to you in the headteachers special edition newsletter at the beginning of the school year. highlights are summarised in this report. the report forms the basis of the annual governors meeting for parents, to which you are all welcome. yours school development plan covers 5 areas: standards teaching and learning curriculum raising aspirations leadership and management the schools intention is to continue to build on its achievements through these key areas of its work. the governing body is regularly updated on developments in all five areas through reports by the headteacher, invited staff members and pupils. in 2008 a wide number of aspects have been developed and achieved. in summary: the teaching staff has integrated the teaching of core skills into their schemes of work. these skills include literacy, numeracy, ict and thinking skills. new vocational courses have been introduced into the school for key stage four (14 to 16 year old) pupils to broaden their opportunities. the school has developed its use of the welsh language in the school, in line with welsh assembly government recommendations. it has worked on the governments programme for esdgc (education for sustainable development and global citizenship) by holding a special esdgc week in the spring term. a healthy school action plan is underway and the school has achieved health school status. links with universities have been forged to encourage pupils to consider university as an option for them. a number of activities have been held to enable pupils to learn more about business and the world of work. the headteacher has run special assemblies for years 9 and 11 to celebrate the work and successes of these year groups. the school achieved the becta quality mark for ict (information communication technology) in july 2009.ii) premises developmentsgrounds work on the calzaghe bridge continued towards the bridge opening in september 2009. a new perimeter fence was put around the school, improving security and safety for our pupils. pupils benefitted from investment in playground seating in the summer term 2009. 6,000 of funding was put into providing new seating in several parts of the school playgrounds. this strong, safe metal seating will last for many years. buildings the school invested in a plasma tv screen in the reception area to give information updates to parents and the community many areas of the school have been re-painted and refreshed, including all english classrooms, the mathematics, music and art corridors the school has invested 12,000 into refurbishing the male and female toilets next to the school hall for the benefit of pupils and the community who access them when visiting the school. new, fire retardant display boards have been put in around the school. new fire doors were purchased for the english school corridor and new fire safety classroom doors have been purchased for a number of classrooms. the pe changing rooms have been refurbished and the department benefitted from having a new pe theory teaching room. new entrance doors have been placed on the dining hall. bilingual signs have been placed around the school, in line with the welsh assembly policy on bilingualism in schools. 3. school achievementsi) fundraising the school has an excellent record in raising funds for charities. in 2008-09 groups receiving donations included:oxfam425 royal british chocolates were distributed to local senior citizens. we can be justifiably proud of this record which reflects the generous and caring nature of the school and local community and the hard work of staff and pupils.ii) school departmentsgovernors have been informed of the work of the school departments over the year. outstanding activities have been reported. many of these are incorporated into the special edition newsletter published by the headteacher in september 2009. iii) physical education successes the school has a long tradition of sporting excellence. listed below are some of our
