The Theme: To criticize the failure of charity and the idealization of countryside, and to remind people of the purity in a corrupt city. The Plot: Oliver Twist was born in a workhouse in 1830s, England. Olivers mother died soon after his birth on the street. Oliver Twist was brought up in the workhouse, he worked long hours for the workhouse but can get a little food. One day, Oliver Twist took his empty bowl to the master and asked for more porridge, which brought him a big trouble, he was forced to leave the workhouse and worked as an apprentice of a undertaker. Oliver became a mourner at many funerals until one day Noah Claypole said bad things about Olivers mother, which caused Oliver to be furious and he hit Noah. Early the next morning, Oliver quietly left for London. As the days passed, Oliver became very weak. Fortunately a kind man gave him some bread and cheese and a poor old lady gave him some food. On the seventh day, Oliver arrived in a small town near London, where he met a strange boy of his age. Then Oliver told him his sad story. The boy offered Oliver bread, ham and something to drink. The boys name was Jack Dawkins, also called “Dodger”. He introduced Oliver Twist to Fagin who organized a gang of children to steal wallets and handkerchiefs on the markets. One day, Fagin required Oliver Twist to go to the market with Dodger and Charley Bates. Near the bookshop, Dodger stole a handkerchief from an old man and ran away with Bates. Poor Oliver finally understood the mystery of Fagins watches and jewels, but unfortunately, he was caught by mistake. However, Oliver Twist was proved innocent soon. The old man, Mr Brownlow, called a carriage and took Oliver to his house. Dodger told Fagin that Oliver had been caught by a policeman, Fagin was afraid that Oliver would tell the police everything about them, so he and his friend Bill Sikes decided to find Oliver. A long time passed, Oliver Twist was finally well in Mr Brownlows house. One sunny day, Oliver Twist was asked to return books to the bookshop, but when he walked out of the house, Nancy and Sikes caught him and pulled him to Fagins house. On A raining night, Sikes and Fagin, together with Oliver, went to break in Mr Brownlows house. Nancy told Mr Brownlow everything about Fagin and Sikes, but she was killed by Sikes soon. The police found Fagin and hanged him for all his crimes. Sikes fell to the street and died when he was trying to escape. Mr Brownlow adopted Oliver, as Oliver Twist grew up Mr Brownlow taught him many things. Oliver loved his new family very much. After all his adventures, Oliver finally found a loving family, true friends and comfortable home.CommentAfter reading this novel, Im shocked that how an orphan can still remain kind-hearted after suffering so much, such as hunger, thirst, beating and abuse. Oliver Twist was a reflection of England in 1800s, in which time people led hard lives, children had no chances to get education, women had no rights to express their points of view. An early example of the social novel, the book calls the publics attention to various contemporary evils, including child labour, the recruitment of children as criminals, and the presence of street children. Dickens mocks the hypocrisies of his time by surrounding the novels serious themes with sarcasm and dark humour. I believe everyone is born with good and honest. Goodness to human is what water is to fish. As the famous saying goes, “The fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose”. Those who are kind-hearted live more happily than those who are evil-minded. Even though there still many people in our society who are both cruel and evil, the majority of us tend to be warm-hearted. To sum up, being kind and not giving up is the secret of surviving. Forgiveness and trust is also a substantial part of loving and caring others. Perhaps most of us would feel confused that why Mrs. Brownlow could accept Oliver again after the little boy disappeared with his book. Maybe we also puzzled that why Mrs. Maylie and Rose believe Oliver is not a burglar after he has tried to steal in their house. Thats because of forgiveness and trust. Forgiveness is our ability to remove negative thoughts and neutralize them. It is trust that helps us all live together without precaution. Sometimes trust can even lead us to miracles, so why not trust? In a word, love and care contain numerous forms; there is love of forgiveness, love of trust. But they all come from your beliefs in life. When someone tells you he
