Course background (analysis of the teaching material) 教材分析This transitional words study is designed to improve students writing skills. It also aims at raising the students awareness of coherence when writing the composition. The materials used are a semi-controlled writings and later some useful phrase needed to put into a coherent English passage, with the purpose of integrating the knowledge and skills learned into written communicationII. Class background 学情分析It is a large group of 53 members with more interests in the art subjects. They have intermediate level English and wish to broaden their vocabulary and improve their 5-sentence writing skills needed for the MET exam. They badly need help and guidance to improve their writing because they lack necessary words and basic grammar acceptable in the exam.III. Teaching aims 教学目标A. language knowledge 语言知识目标1. vocabulary To help students to master some transitional words2. functionTo integrate the learning of transitional words and the use of language in a nearly real-life situation.B. language skills 语言技能目标1. Logical skills To help students learn the importance of transitional words when wring the composition2. Writing skillsTo guide students to writing a simple passage with the use of transitional words with the help of their classmates or the teacher, including:a. to write with correct transitional words choiceb. to write with correct “SV”- sentence structure coherentlyC. learning strategy 学习策略目标1. cognitive strategy 认知策略To focus on teachers talk and be able to take in the target words for creative use To generalize rules of the transitional words usage from teachers language examples 2. adjusting strategy 调控策略To learn how to get chances and help from others when having difficulties. Teaching methodThe task-based method adopted for this teaching highlights the students learning activities, in which students learn not only language knowledge and skills but also experience a process with thinking and trying, choosing and deleting, also, revising and deciding. The lesson is based on the learning of students in an imitative authentic setting, in which teachers elicit students oral output with questions and tasks. The progression is guided and graded on a spiral development of teaching procedures. As a result, students can learn to use language in a natural and authentic setting, keep learning and drawing conclusions about language, and finally to attain the ability to use the English language. We dont have to spend a lot of time going to shops. , we can see a great deal of goods shown on the computer screen at the same time. , online shopping is not so perfect. The pictures of goods shown on the computer screen are not always what they are. , we can be cheated easily. , we can not see the things in detail. the disadvantages of online shopping, I think it is an advanced way to do shopping. we should develop it.Task IV. VI. Teaching design A. Guiding principleAs is noted in the English Curriculum Criterion, students, with the help and encouragement by teachers, should experience, practice, involve and explore language thereby to discover the rules behind it and master language knowledge and skills. They should regulate their affect and attitudes to build up a set of effective learning strategies and an autonomous leaning ability. Therefore, this lesson is to promote students ability to think and express in English, and to taste success in writing.B. Class design draftThe writings are based on the text of narrating stories. The progression of this teaching material is designed into several steps:1. Study the rule: brainstorming and elicitation of the transitional words that are needed for writing.2. Find the rule: present a passage which is lack of coherence and students in group of 4 to discuss and add some transitional words and rewrite the passage, later, they are required to sum up the advantages of the usage of the transitional words3. Grasp the rule: students read an essay and choose appropriate transitional words to fill in the blanks 4. Apply the rule: students are required to write a coherent passage under the guidance. VII. Teaching proceduresTask one:brainstorm to elicit the transitional words as much as possibleTeacher talk: We will begin our class with a game; I hope everyone can write transitional words as much as possible on the blackboard, and later we will check which group makes the best contributions.Task two:find the rule by discussion and summarizationTeacher talk: Do you think the passage is prefect enough in terms of information, structure and coherence?Task three: grasp the rule by rewriting the sentencesTeacher talk: lets read the following essay and choose from the list below appropriate transitional words to fill in the blanks.
