One day Mrs Nanet ONeill gave an arithmetic 51to our class. When the papers were marked she discovered that twelve boys had made exactly the 52mistakes throughout the test. There is nothing really new about 53in exams. Perhaps that was why Mrs ONeill 54even say a word about it, she only asked the twelve boys to 55after class. I was one of the twelve. Mrs ONeill asked 56questions, and she didnt 57us either. Instead, she wrote on the blackboard the above words by Thomas Macaulay. She then ordered us to 58these words into our exercise-books one hundred times. I dont 59about the other eleven boys. Speaking for 60I can say: it was the most important single 61of my life. Thirty years after being 62to Macaulays words, they 63seem to me the best yardstick, because they give us a way to measure ourselves rather than others. 64of us are asked to make 65decisions about nations going to war or armies going to battle. But all of us are called upon daily to make a great many personal decisions. 66the wallet, found in the street, be put into a pocket 67turned over to the policeman? I cant say that I enjoyed it, but it was an experience Ill never forget. I could never understand why there were so many things in the sales; where did they all come from? Now I know the secret! Firstly, there is the special winter stock and the stock that people buy all the year around; some of these things are slightly reduced. Secondly, there are the summer clothes they couldnt sell last year; these are heavily reduced to clear them. Thirdly, there are cheap clothes bought in specially for the sales; these are put out at high prices ten days before the sale begins and then are reduced by 60% in the sale. Clever! Lastly, they buy in “seconds” (clothes not in perfect condition) for the sale and they are sold very cheaply. When I arrived half an hour before opening on the first day of the sale, there was already a queue around three sides of the building. This made me very nervous. When the big moment arrived to open the doors, the security guards, looking less confident than usual, came up to them, keys in hand. The moment they had unlocked the doors, they hid behind the doors for protection as the noisy crowd charged in. I couldnt believe my eyes; this wasnt shopping, it was a battlefield! One poor lady couldnt keep her feet and was knocked over by people pushing from behind. Clothes were flying in all directions as people searched for the sizes, colours and styles they wanted. Quarrels broke out. Mothers were using their small children to crawl through peoples legs and get hold of things they couldnt get near themselves. Within minutes I had half a dozen people pushing clothes under my nose, each wanting to be the first served. Where had the famous English queue gone? The whole day continued like that, but I kept my temper! I was taking money hand over fist and began to realize why, twice a year, Grahams were happy to turn their expensive store into a battlefield like this. In the sale fever, people were spending money like water without thinking whether they needed what they were buying. As long as it was a bargain it was OK! You wont believe this but as soon as I got home I crashed out for four hours. Then I had dinner and went back to bed, fearing the sound of the alarm which would tell me to get ready for the second day of the sale. 74. The underlined word “crawl” means _. A. stare atB. jump over C. move on the ground with hands and knees D. climb onto 75. Which of the following is the best title of the passage? A. Foolish Customers B. A Pleasant Christmas C. A Good Bargain D. Sale Fever 76. In the writers view, why were Grahams happy to make their expensive store into a battlefield? A. They dont have much experience in doing business. B. They wanted to make more money by having sales. C. The customers got a fever at Christmas. D. They dont want too many clothes in stock. (C) Life really should be one long journey of joy for children born with a world of wealth at their feet. Internationally famous child doctor Robert Coles is the worlds top expert on the influence of money on children. He has written a well-known book on the subject, “The Privileged Ones” and his research shows that too much money in the family can cause as many problems as too little. “Obviously there are certain advantages to being rich,” says the 53-year-old doctor, “such as better health, education and future work prospects. But the most important is the quality of family life. Money cant buy love.” It can buy a lot of other things, however; and thats where the trouble starts. Rich kids have so much to choose from that they often become confused. Over-indulgence by their parents can make them spoilt. They tend to travel more than other children, from home to home and country to country, which causes feelings of restlessness. “But privileged children do have a better sense of their positions in the world,” adds Mr. Coles, “and they are more self-assured.” The rich children inherit the property from their parents and enjoy a high income. So money will never be one of their problems. “However, they will have a sense of isolation,” warns Dr. Coles, “and they could suffer from the hardship of not being able to deal with the everyday world because they will never really be given the chance. Everything they have achieved is because of an accident of birth. There can be no tremendous inner satisfaction about that.” Todays wealthy parents perhaps realize their riches can be more of a heavy load than a hap
