Ad 4.BWinston Churchill is probably the most popular British prime minister ever. Having served his country as a soldier and politician, he is often considered among the greatest of Britons. But while his heroic stand against the Nazis is well known, there are still a few facts about the popular politician that might surprise you. The classic image of WinstonChurchillincludesagiantcigarstuckbetweenhislips. However, healmostnevertookapuff, preferringtochewontheenduntilit went out, then relight it and start again.Althoughitssomewhatovershadowedbyhispoliticalcareer,WinstonChurchillwasan accomplished writer. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1953. Hisfirstbookwas The StoryoftheMalakandFieldForce, a first-hand account of a military campaign in what is now Pakistan. Funnilyenough, therewas an American writer named Winston Churchill active at the same time.Interestingly,bothChurchillspublishedtheirfirstbooksin1898, although the American Churchill was the first to become famous for his writing. Unsurprisingly, hewould finally be eclipsed (使黯然失色) bythefameofhis British counterpart and is almost forgotten today. But at the time, the two writers were often confused with each other. To avoid further difficulty, the two Churchills eventually agreed that the British Churchill would publish as “Winston S. Churchill” while the American would simply go by “Winston Churchill”.InDecember1931,ChurchillwasinNewYork. Whilecrossingthe street, he was hit by a car. As it turned out, Churchill had instinctively looked to the right when he wanted to cross. However, since cars drive on opposite sides of the road in America and Britain, he should actually have looked left. Instead, he stepped serenely into the path of an oncoming car. Fortunately, he played down the severity of the injuries. He also accepted all the blame for the accident, informing the police that the driver was innocent and securing his release. Afterwards, Churchill managed to talk his doctor into writing him a note stating that “The post-accident concussion (撞击) of Winston S. Churchill necessitates the use of alcoholic spirits, especially at meal times.” 24. The underlined word “overshadow” in Paragraph 3 probably means _. A. to hide B. to promote C. to bring shame on D. to make small by comparison25. Which of the following is true of Churchill? A. He preferred political career to writing. B. His first book is about the war against Nazis. C. His popularity seemed not to be affected by his image of smoking cigar. D. He had a fight with the American Churchill over the use of their names.26. From the car accident, we know Churchill was a _ man. A. loving B. careless C. sympathetic D. strong-willed27. What may the paragraph that follows talk about?A. Churchills other kindness. B. Churchills political achievement. C. Some other anecdotes of Churchill. D. Churchills popularity in international communityCNobody likes an old poop (傻子). Developing a sense of humor is part of becoming a mature, emotionally healthy individual. Laughter is good for the soul, builds friendships and relieves stress. It serves as the glue for social situations and as an ice-breaker for sadness and boredom. If youve ever been told to “lighten up” or “chill out”, you should save the blue attitude for serious situations and develop your sense of humor.Forgive the accidental. A sudden fall is humorous not because we like to see people fall, but because it surprises. From a spilled water glass in a meeting to Aunt Raes teeth coming off in the Thanksgiving turkey, the embarrassment of accidents can be relieved by humor and a helping hand. After making sure that nobodys hurt, forgive accidents with a chuckle (咯咯地笑) rather than a scolding.Look for the unexpected. The kid who used to look at you with his eyes closed during a test had the idea. Parents who serve green eggs and ham to their children on graduation day get the idea. Unexpected actions lighten an atmosphere and relax people.Learn to laugh with your kids. Most of what children say and do is funny. Help them learn that accidents are sometimes funny and sometimes occasions for joining in and helping another human being. By sharing laughs and attempting to explain humor, you develop your sense of humor, as well as help kids develop their own sense of humor.28. If youve ever been told to “lighten up” or “chill out”, it means _. A. you are blue B. you are funny C. you lack humor D. you are humorous29. According to Paragraph 2, when your friend falls, you can _. A. chuckle B. scold him C. laugh at him D. feel embarrassed 30. In the authors opinion, if your mother serves green eggs and ham to you on your graduation day, she is _. A. boring B. serious C. humorous D. considerate31. What is the best title for the passage?A. The Function of HumorB. Proper Attitudes towards HumorC. How to Develop a Sense of HumorD. Ways to Become a Healthy IndividualD The regular use of text messages and e-mails can lower the IQ more than twice as much as smoking marijuana (大麻). That is the statement of researchers who have found that tapping away on a mobile phone or computer keypad or checking for electronic messages temporarily knocks up to 10 points off the users IQ. This rate of decline in intelligence compares unfavorably with the four-point drop in IQ associated with smoking marijuana, according to British researchers, who have described the phenomenon of improved stupidity as “infomania”. The research conducted by Hewlett Packard, the technology company, has concluded that it is mainly a problem for adult workers, especially men. It is concluded that too much use of modern technology can damage a persons mind. It can cause a constant distraction of “always on” technology when employees should be concentrating on what they are paid to do. Infomania means that they lose concentration as their minds remain fixed in an almost permanent state of readiness to react to technology instead of focusing on the task in hand. The report also added that, in a long term, the brain will be considerably shaped by what we do to it and by the experience of daily life. At a microcellular level, the complex networks of nerve cells that make up parts of the brain actually change in response to certain experiences. Too much use of modern technology can be damaging not only to a persons mind, but to their social relationship. 1,100 adults were interviewed during the research. More than 62 per cent of them admitted that they were addicted to checking their e-mails and text messages so often that they scrutinized work-related ones even when at home or on holiday. Half said that they always responded immediately to an email and will even interrupt a meeting to do so. It is concluded that infomania is increasing stress and anxiety and affecting ones characteristics. Nine out of ten thought that colleagues who answered e-mails or messages during a face-to-face meeting were extremely rude. The effects on IQ were studied by Dr Glenn Wilson, a psychologist at University of London. “This is a very real and widespread phenomenon,” he said. “We have found that infomania will damage a workers performance by reducing their mental sharpness and changing their social life. Companies should encourage a more balanced and appropriate way of working.”32. We can learn from the passage that “infomania” _.A. has a positive influence on ones IQB. results in the change of part of the brainC. lies in the problem of lack of concentrationD. is caused by too much use of modern technology33. The research mentioned in the passage is most probably about _. A. the important function of advanced technologyB. the damage to ones brain done by unhealthy habitsC. the relevance between IQ and use of modern technologyD. the relationship between intelligence and working effectiveness34. The underlined word “scrutinized” probably means “_”. A. copied patientlyB. corrected quicklyC. answered hurriedlyD. examined carefully35. What is the main idea of this passage?A. Modern technology can damage a persons mind.B. Electronic messages have side effects on the users life.C. The regular use of text messages and e-mails can harm your IQ.D. The regular use of text messages and e-mails can be compared to smoking marijuana.第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 What is a shopaholic (购物癖)? 36 While the media sometimes use the word casually, shopaholics suffer from a real, and sometimes very frightening, lack of self-control. Without a doubt, we live in a spend-happy society. Most people live beyond their means and are in debt. 37 They take weekend-long shopping excursions, spend money they do not have, and often regret their purchases the next day. But, does this mean that they have a problem? Not necessarily. True shopaholics shop because they cant help it. 38 They shop when they are feeling depressed, and use spending as a way of coping with the world. They do not shop because they enjoy it, or because they need the things they buy. They buy things because they feel they have to. 39 Two pieces of advice given to shopaholics are these. Firstly, when you go shopping, only take cash. Leave your credit cards and checkbooks (支票簿) at home. And secondly, if you see something that you want to buy, dont let yourself buy it on the spot. 40 If you still want the item a few days later, then you can go back and buy it.A. Nowadays there are more and more shopaholics, which has become a major concern for the society.B. Instead, give yourself a waiting period.C. In recent years, shopaholics have come to the public attention on television and in newspaper and magazine articles.D. They go on buying things long after they have huge debts.E.
