1. My profession is literature; and in that profession there are fewer experiences for women than in any other, with the exception of the stage-fewer, I mean, that are peculiar to women. (Para. 1)Translation: 我的专业是文学,而在这个专业中,妇女的特殊经历比其他专业中妇女面临的特殊经历要少,舞台艺术是个例外。2. For the road was cut. (Para. 1)Paraphrase: Early women writers had made their way into the profession of literature. The road was shaped.Translation: 道路已经开辟出来了。 3. Writing was a reputable and harmless occupation. (Para. 1)Translation: 写作是个受人尊敬且无害的职业。4. No demand was made upon the family purse. (Para. 1)Paraphrase: There was no need for a writer to spend much of the family money in order to write.5. Pianos and models, Paris, Vienna and Berlin, masters and mistresses, are not needed by a writer. (Para. 1)Paraphrase: If you want to be a musician or a painter, you must own a piano or hire models, and you have to visit or even live in cultural centers like Paris, Vienna and Berlin. And also you have to be taught by masters and mistresses. However, if you want to be a writer, you dont need all these.Translation: 当个作家不需要钢琴、模特,也无需住在巴黎、维也纳、柏林等文化之都, 或受教于专业教师。6. The cheapness of writing paper is, of course, the reason why women have succeeded as writers before they have succeeded in the other professions. (Para. 1)Translation: 当然,正是由于写字纸价廉,妇女才得以在她们在其他职业里取得成功之前先在文学方面有所建树。7. It was she who used to cause arguments or problems between me and my paper when I was writing. (Para. 3)Paraphrase: The false belief about what a proper woman should be often caused arguments or problems between me and what I was writing. Here the word “paper” stands for what she was writing. Translation: 就是她,在我写评论时,总是在我和我的写作之间制造麻烦。 8. she was so constituted that she never had a mind or wish of her own. (Para. 3)Paraphrase: She was made up, formed or designed in such a way that she never had an opinion or wish of her own. 9. Above allI need not say itshe was pure. (Para. 3)Paraphrase: Of all the qualities, purity was the most important one. The word pure: virgin, chaste, and virtuous. 10. Directly, that is to say, I took my pen in hand to review the novel by a famous man, she slipped behind me and whispered. (Para. 3)Paraphrase: As soon as I began to review that novel by a famous man, she got behind me quickly and quietly, and whispered. 11. And she made as if to guide my pen. (Para. 3)Paraphrase: She moved in a way that made it seem that she was going to guide my writing. 12. I now record the one act for which I take some credit to myself a certain sum of money-shall we say five hundred pounds a year? - so that it was not necessary for me to depend solely on charm for my living. (Para. 3)Translation: 下面我要说说多少是我自己决定做的一件事情,当然做此事的功劳主要还应归功于我的了不起的祖先,是他们给我留下了一笔财产 (比如说每年五百英镑吧) ,这样我就不必完全靠女人的魅力去谋生了。13. I turned upon her and caught her by the throat. (Para. 3)Paraphrase: I turned upon her: Suddenly I attacked her violently. 14. She would have plucked the heart out of my writing. (Para. 3)Translation: 否则她定会把我的写作精髓抽掉。15. For, as I found, directly I put pen to paper, you cannot review even a novel without having a mind of your own, without expressing what you think to be the truth about human relations, morality, sex. (Para. 3)Paraphrase: For, I found that as soon as I began writing, one must have an ability of independent thinking and have the courage to express what one thinks to be the truth about human relations, morality and sex. Translation: 因为当你开始写作时,你会发现,如果没有自己的独立思考能力,如果不能表述你是如何看待人与人之间的关系、道德和性,那么你连评论一本小说也做不到。16. And all these questions, according to the Angel in the House, cannot be dealt with freely and openly by women; they must charm, they must conciliate, they must-to put it bluntly-tell lies if they are to succeed. (Para. 3)Paraphrase: According to the Victorian attitudes, women are not supposed to discuss and explore these questions freely and openly. They must use their feminine charm to gain recognition from men; they must make concessions in their arguments; they must tell lies in order to succeed in the profession of writing.Translation: 按照“家里的天使”的看法,妇女不能自由地公开地解决这所有的问题; 假如她们要成功,她们必须以魅力取胜,必须妥协,直白地说,必须说谎。17. Thus, whenever I felt the shadow of her wing or the radiance of her halo upon my page, I took up the inkpot and flung it at her. (Para. 3)Paraphrase: Explain the implied meaning of the sentence in your own words: Thus, whenever I felt the influence of the Victorian attitudes on my writing, I fought back with all my power. Note that this sentence is part of her extended metaphor of killing the Angel in the House.Translation: 这样,每当我感觉到写作纸上有天使翅膀的影子或头上光环的话,我会抓起墨水瓶,用力地向天使抛去。18. Her fictitious nature was of great assistance to her. It is far harder to kill a phantom than a reality. (Para. 3)Translation: 她的虚幻本质给她帮了大忙:杀死一个幽灵远比杀死一个真人要困难得多。19. Though I flatter myself that I killed her in the end, the struggle was severe; it took much time that had better have been spent upon learning Greek grammar; or in roaming the world in search of adventures. (Para. 3)Paraphrase: Although I made myself believe that I killed her in the end, the struggle was severe and it took so much more time than one would have expected, time one would rather spend learning Greek grammar or traveling in the world in search of adventures. Translation: 我自认为最后杀死了“家里的天使,” 但斗争是严酷的,并消耗了大量时间,这些时间还不如用于学习希腊语法,或者周游世界,需求探险。20. she had rid of herself of falsehood. (Para. 4)Paraphrase: She had got rid of those untrue ideas and stopped telling lies.21. I do not believe that anybody can know until she has expressed herself in all the arts and professions open to human skill. (Para. 4)Paraphrase: I believe that to know what is a woman, we women have to participate in all the arts and professions open to human knowledge and understanding and to give expressions to our feelings in creative forms.Translation: 我相信,只有妇女在人类知识所涉及的全部文学艺术和专业领域中用创造形式表达自己的情感后,她们才能知道什么是妇女。22. I hope I am not giving away professional secrets if I say that a novelists chief desire is to be as unconscious as possible. (Para. 5)Translation: 假如我说小说家的主要愿望是尽量处于无意识状态,我希望我没有泄露行业秘密。23. He has to induce in himself a state of perpetual lethargy. (Para. 5)Paraphrase: He has to cause in himself a particular condition in which he will remain abnormally drowsy and sluggish for a long time.Translation: 他不得不使自己处于一种持续的慵懒状态。24. He wants to see the same faces, to read the same books, to do the same things day after day, month after month, while he is writing, so that nothing may break the illusion in which he is living-so that nothing may disturb or disquiet the mysterious nosings about, feelings round, darts, dashes and sudden discoveries of that very shy and illusive spirit, the imagination. (Para. 5)Paraphrase: Meeting people, reading books and doing things are some of the external factors of the authors life, the routine, and the predictable social events. Wanting to see the same people, to read the same books and do the same things further explains her idea about life with the utmost quiet and regularity. Reducing everyday life to unchanging routines avoids having to pay much attention to the people or the events. This orientation has led to the establishment of some writers colonies or retreat centers where for a time writers do not have to worry about meals, children or housecleaning and simply write.Translation: 他希望在他写作时,他每天见的人、读的书、做的事都是相同的,这样任何事物都不会打破他生活的幻觉,也不会搅乱他的四处探求摸索以及对那令人难以捉摸的容易被吓跑的东西想象力的突然发现。25. Be that as it may, I want you to imagine me writing a novel in a state of trance. (Para. 5)Translation:尽管如此,我请你想象我在似睡非睡的状态中创作小说。 26. The image that comes to my mind when I think of this girl is the image of a fisherman lying sunk in dreams on the verge of a deep lake with a rod held out over the water. (5)Translation: 当我想到这女孩时,脑海里浮现出一个形象:一位垂钓者躺在深水湖边,手握钓竿,睡梦正酣。27. She was letting her imagination sweep unchecked round every rock and cranny of the world that lies submerged in the depths of our unconscious being. (Para. 5)MetaphorParaphrase: Explain the meaning of the sentence in non-figurative English: She was letting her imagination explore freely every corner of the inner world that lay hidden in the deepest parts of her unconscious existence.28. Now came the experience, the experience that I believe to be far commoner with women writers than with men. (Para. 5)Translation: 现在,这个经历开始了,而我相信,这种经历对于妇女来说远比男人来得更为经常。29. The line raced through her fingers. Her imagination had rushed awayThe imagination had dashed against something hard. (Para. 5)Translation: 钓鱼线从她的手指缝中滑掉了。她的想象力消失了。方才,这想象力正在搜寻水池,它的深处,那些最大的鱼沉睡的昏暗地方。突然发生了猛烈撞击,随之是一声巨响,湖水激起了泡沫,变得浑浊。原来她的想象力撞击到一个坚硬的物体上。30. To speak without figure she had thought of something, something about the body, about the passions which it was unfitting for her as a woman to say. Men, her reason told her, would be shocked. (Para. 5)Translation: Her imagination was exploring freely until she thought of something, something about the body, about the passions. But she realized that it was unfitting for her as a woman to tell the truth about the body and about the passions because men would be shocked.Translation: 不用修辞手段、直截了当地说,她想起了什么,一些关于身体和激情的事,是作为女人不宜说出口的事。她的理性告诉她,男人听了会震惊的。31. The consciousness of what men will say of a woman who speaks the truth about her passions had roused her from her artists state of unconsciousness. (Para. 5)Paraphrase: She realized that men didnt approve of a woman daring to tell the truth about her body and her passions. They would surely say bad things about such a woman. This realization interrupted her imagination and roused her from the state of unconsciousness, the state in which an artist desired to be. Translation: 她意识到男人们会如何议论一个敢讲有关激情真话的女人,这使她从艺术家的无意识状态中惊醒了。32. For though men sensibly allow themselves great freedom in these respects, I doubt that they realize or can control the extreme severity with which they condemn such freedom in women. (Para. 5)Paraphrase: It was a sensible thing for men to give themselves great freedom to talk about the body and their passions. But if women want to have the same freedom, men condemn such freedom in women. And I do not believe that they realize how severely they condemn such freedom in women, nor do I believe that they can control their extremely severe condemnation of such freedom in women.33. Inwardly, I think, the case is very different; she has still many ghosts to fight, many prejudices to overcome. (Para. 6)Paraphrase: Regarding the mental and spiritual world, the inner nature of a person, it is not simple at all for a woman writer, for she still has many obstacles and prejudices to fight and overcome.Translation: 从内心精神世界看,情况颇为不同。妇女还要与许多幽灵鬼怪展开斗争,还有许多偏见需要去克服。34. Indeed, it will be a long time still, I think, before a woman can sit down to write a book without finding a phantom to be slain, a rock to be dashed against.
