I miss my sugar! Ive decided to lose weight and I had to give up cakes. Its difficult because I have a sweet tooth and I love cream cakes. Not having treats can be good for your health. Ive heard that the Burts, a family of five in South East England, lived sugar free for a whole year after they found out their daughter had diabetes (糖尿 病).It wasnt easy. She points out that shes got lots of people offering to taste the cakes for them. The family is also thinking about selling more delicious products.I wonder what makes us have a strong desire for sweet food. Anyway, Ive decided to forget about the sweet taste of sugar for a while. If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know how the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the computer. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件夹). Surprisingly, people later remembered the folder location (位置) better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory (交互记忆)”According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesnt mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing. 25The passage begins with two questions to . Aintroduce the main topicBshow the authors attitude Cdescribe how to use the InternetDexplain how to store information 26What can we learn about the first experiment? AThe Sparrows team typed the information into a computer. BThe two groups remembered the information equally well. CThe first group did not try to remember the information. DThe second group did not understand the information. 27In transactive memory, people . Akeep the information in mind Bchange the quantity of information Corganize information like a computer Dremember how to find the information 28What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrows research? AWe are using memory differently. BWe are becoming more intelligent. CWe have poorer memories than before. DWe need a better way to access information.COne of the greatest gifts one generation can give to other generations is the wisdom it has gained from experience. In 1995,historian Frances Wood argued in her book Did Marco Polo Go to China ? that the famous explorer from Venice never made it to pass the Black Sea. She noted that his travel journal left out the Great Wall of China, chopsticks and tea drinking among other details.Furthermore, Chinese documents from Polos day made no mention of the explorer and his men. Last year, a team of Italian researchers became the latest to challenge Polos accounts. They said that evidence didnt support his description of Kublai Khans Japanese invasions (侵略).Now, however, research by Hans Ulrich Vogel of Germanys Tubingen University might help prove Marco Polo was true. In a new book Marco Polo Was in China, the professor of Chinese history tries to prove that Marco Polo spoke the truth. He suggests, for example, that Polo didnt include the Great Wall in his book because it only achieved its great importance in the Ming Dynasty several hun-dred years later. Vogel further explains that Chinese records from the 13th and 14th centuries avoided setting down visits from Westerners.Historians before him have touched on these issues. But Vogel also relies on another evidence:the explorers very detailed descriptions of currency and salt production in the Yuan Dynasty. Accord-ing to Vogel, Polo documented these aspects of Mongol Chinese culture in greater detail than any oth-er of his time. This is a hint that Polo relied on his own powers of observation. Will we ever know whether Marco Polo traveled to China? Perhaps not, but the consequences of his real or fictional journey are still felt across the globe. One reader of The travels of Marco Polo was Christopher Columbus, who stepped upon the New World while following his idols footsteps.33.France Wood doubted Marco Polos travels to China because his description .A.missed some important culture of China B. covered so much about traders lifeC.was full of obvious mistakes D. seemed less detailed34.Vogels trust on Marco Polo is based on the argument that .a.The Great Wall didn t gain its importance thenb.Records in the Yuan Dynasty mentioned Poloc.Polo mentioned the currency and saltd.Polos other works are believablee.Polo recorded what he saw in great detailA. a, b, dB. a, c, dC. a, eD.b,c35.
