Then, the market turned and my husbands job at a construction company was gone. The company was closing down for good. We both started looking for jobs right away, but there werent any to be found. With each passing day we were getting increasingly worried and we continued to work together in order to pull our family through. The more we pulled together, the closer we got. I felt feelings of admiration for my husband that I hadnt felt in years. Thats why it was so hard for me to watch him blame himself for our present situation. I continually asked him to stop, but he seemed to want to punish himself for not having a job. Finally, one afternoon I pulled him aside and said, “We have four healthy children and each other. Thats whats important. That makes you a rich man.”“But what if we lose the house? Theyll hate me - youll hate me,” he replied.I smiled at him and put my hands on both sides of his face to make him look me in the eye. “No matter where we live I will be happy - as long as I have you,” I smiled again as I realized that I wasnt just saying that. In all the struggling together I had found that deep love for him that I had on the day we said “I do”.I could see his shoulders and neck relaxed. He held me close and we were able to talk and plan and dream together in a way that we hadnt for quite some time. It was a turning point for us as a couple and a family. We are still struggling for our better life, but I consider us well-off because we have something that money cant buy and no one can take away from us. 1、The underlined sentence in the second paragraph means that _.A. they became closer as they struggled togetherB. they hoped to find jobs in the same companyC. neither of them had the courage to face the difficultyD. they were trying to make their relationship closer2、We can learn from the passage that _.A. they both found good jobs at last B. both of them were worried about joblessnessC. her husband was to blame for the unemploymentD. they didnt love each other when they got married3、Which of the following can best describe their present life?A. Some value it highly, believing that it is responsible for social progress and prosperity; others say that competition is bad; that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people. I have taught many children who held the belief that their self-worth relied on how well they performed at tennis and other skills. For them, playing well and winning are often life-and-death affairs. In their single-minded pursuit of success, the development of many other human qualities is sadly forgotten. However, while some seem to be lost in the desire to succeed, others take an opposite attitude. In a culture which values only the winner and pays no attention to the ordinary players, they strongly blame competition. Among the most vocal are youngsters who have suffered under competitive pressures from their parents or society. Teaching these young people, I often observe in them a desire to fail. They seem to seek failure by not trying to win or achieve success. By not trying, they always have an excuse: “I may have lost, but it doesnt matter because I really didnt try.” What is not usually admitted by themselves is the belief that if they had really tried and lost, that would mean a lot. Such a loss would be a measure of their worth. Clearly, this belief is the same as that of the true competitors who try to prove themselves. Both are based on the mistaken belief that ones self-respect relies on how well one performs in comparison with others. Both are afraid of not being valued. Only as this basic and often troublesome fear begins to dissolve can we discover a new meaning in competition.【小题1】What does this passage mainly talk about? The earliest evidence for humancat interaction dates back to prehistoric Cyprus(史前塞浦路斯), where the remains of a wild cat and a human dated 9,500 years old were found buried together. A new study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has confirmed the first direct evidence of a humandomestic cat relationship among Chinese farmers 5,300 years ago. Researchers studied the bones of cats, dogs, deer and other animals unearthed in an excavation (挖掘) near a village in Central China. By using some ways, scientists showed that the cats were living on a mostly millet(黍)based diet, just like the domesticated dogs and pigs from the site. The most reasonable explanation for a high consumption of milletbased food is that the cats had formed a stable and mutual relationship with humans and could easily feed on rodents (啮齿动物) around human villages, find leftover food or even have been fed by people intentionally, said Hu Yaowu from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, whose research focuses on the relationship between humans and domesticated animals. It is very interesting for us to find the consumption of millet-based foods by the cats, since this kind of evidence had long been missing.” Hu explains. Since cats usually eat meat, such a diet would be unexpected, unless the cats were being fed by people, the study argues. The researchers also found that one of the cats survived to reach old age, implying that it had a safe place to live and enough to eat. Why the farmers wanted to keep cats nearby or make them pets could be answered by other evidence. Chinese archaeologists found some storage containers were specifically designed to keep out rodents a vermin (害兽) that cats could certainly have helped with. The simplified theory is that rats were attracted to the food of farmers, and so were harmful to farmers. Cats were attracted to the rats, and so farmers formed a mutually beneficial relationship with cats, taking care of them in return for pest control.【小题1】The evidence found in the remains dating back to prehistoric Cyprus means . What do you love to do? If you truly love what you do just go ahead and try to make a living by doing it. People will throw money at you to do it. But you will always have to work hard at it. I have to draw every single day of my life. I have to draw about 20 ideas. My advice is to put aside a certain amount of time every day and make you draw or whatever, especially when you dont feel like it. Only in this way will you be able to perfect your talent. The first step you take is to go to your local library and ask for the publications issued in the current years. When you get these publications, try to find the names of the top people concerned and their presidents. After you find these, write down their names and addresses. Keep this list and update it every year. Next thing you want to do is to create at least 40 cartoons. Get a grid(格子) from one of the strips in the newspapers, enlarge it to whatever size you wish and draw inside this grid. Now take the best 20 of your ideas and make them into finished pieces. To do this, you would want to copy them in ink because if you were a professional cartoonist, that was what you should do. Now you can reduce the size of the finished cartoons to fit onto a regular comics page. By comparing yours with the others already in print, it gives you a good idea of clarity to your cartoon. The next step is to write letters to presidents of the publication. In the letters, explain who you think would read your work, or in other words, what group do you think you would target. After you complete these, send all of your information enclosed with letters in the appropriate envelope. Now as soon as you send out these letters, start to create a brand new strip with all new characters. Dont get married to one idea because if your idea gets turned down the
