Warm-up questions:Do you know which culture China belongs to: being culture or doing culture?Do you know the relationship between human and nature in China and America?.Watch a video clip and repeat the key words. Introduction the main content of this chapterThe traditional Western belief about human nature is that humans are basically evil. We see this in the Bible story of Adam and Eve. God throws them out of the Garden of Eden because they ate the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge. From that time on, according to Christian teaching, all humans have been born with original sin. That means they do evil as part of their nature and can only be saved from evil by God. As a result of the rise of humanism in the West, this basic belief has changed to one of seeing human as a mixture of good and evil. The original belief continues to flourish alongside the more modern belief. In the Western moral universe it is necessary to confess the bad you do. You should admit to your mistakes and shortcomings. This is the first step in becoming good. Even a US president can be forgiven for his mistakes, if he publicly admits his wrong ding and promises not to do it again. In Confucian cultures people are encouraged to be good by the people around them and are likely to feel ashamed if they fail to live up to others expectations that they be virtuous. If China has what some experts call a shame culture, then the West is dominated by guilt culture.
