English is an interesting new textbook with some variations from the traditional in its approach It would seem appropriate for self study especially when used in conjunction 联合 with the cassette but is primarily intended for classroom use Indeed the text itself contains notes to the teacher rather than those appearing in a separate teacher s guide Each unit contains three readings all of which except for those appearing in the ninth and final unit are illustrated The teacher s notes indicate that the teacher should refrain 避免 克制 from answering students questions about these readings until each student has worked through all the reading comprehension exercises without help 用心 爱心 专心4 Among the book s distinctive features is the fact that it contains a more extensive list of affixes than any other written for this level while exercises are provided which allow students to be creative with the English they learn Again unlike most comparable texts Expressing Yourself in English does not formally introduce the verb to be until unit 3 One hint for teachers and students alike is that students should not expect to be successful with the examinations offered in the body of the text unless they study outside of class and memorize the dialogue that introduces each unit In order to keep the price low the book is paperbound 平装书 and all pictures and illustrations are in black and white The textbook will be accompanied by a workbook to be published later this year 41 The aim of Expressing Yourself in English is to A present some changes in its approach to learning English B present a more traditional approach to learning English C present different materials from traditional D present a more variable approach to learning English 42 Teacher s notes are available to any one who A wants to use it for self study B teaches this book C finishes reading the whole book D buys this book 43 Those students who will score highly on the tests A study more hours than only in class and memorize the dialogues introducing the unit B simply memorize the dialogues from the unit introductions C control a more extensive list of affixes D do all the provided exercises creatively 44 Teachers are instructed A not to answer any student s questions about reading comprehension B to help students do all the reading comprehension questions C to answer students questions only after they have finished all the exercises D not to help students with these exercise at all 45 The illustrations are not in color in order to make the book A look black and whiteB more affordable C easier to studyD come out sooner and cheaper B Let us now consider a modern case of telepathy A girl of about ten years of age was walking along a country lane reading a book on geometry Quite suddenly her surroundings seemed to fade away and she saw her mother lying apparently dead on the floor of a little used room at home known as the white room Near her on the floor was a handkerchief The child was so upset by this vision that instead of going straight home she rushed to the doctor s house and persuaded him to go home with her They found the woman lying on the floor of 用心 爱心 专心5 the white room suffering from a severe heart attack Beside her was the handkerchief The doctor arrived in time to save her life The case is a good one The story is not one that a child of ten would be expected to invent in a crisis Moreover it was verified that she did visit the doctor before going home Quite possibly however the tale was helped by the addition of details after the event The mention of the handkerchief may have been added later to make the story sound more impressive or it may even have been a distortion of memory What is most important is that the child acted on her vision and went straight to the doctor Quite recently in the New York Times Magazine a physician tried to discredit the case by suggesting that the child s mother may have been a hysteric who frequently imagined she was having heart attacks and so there would be nothing very remarkable in the child s inventing vision of her parent suffering from such a seizure The suggestion does not seem very likely Had the woman been subject to such attacks genuine or imagined the doctor would surely have mentioned the fact Moreover later in her life the girl frequently spoke about the incident as something unique in her experience which she would scarcely have done had the vision been a mere exercise of the imagination 46 While the young girl was walking along the lane A she suddenly fainted B she had a vision of a white handkerchief C she thought she saw her mother lying dead on the floor D she remembered the day when her mother had died of a heart attack 47 When the doctor and the girl reached the house A the mother was already dead B the mother was recovering from a heart attack C the mother was pretending to have a heart attack D the mother was still suffering from a heart attack 48 A physician in the New York Times Magazine suggested that A the child s mother might have been a hysteric B she frequently imagined she was having heart attacks C the mother s imagined illness caused the child to have such a vision D all of the above 49 The fact that the child went straight to the doctor proves that A the whole story was an invention B she could not have added the details later C she believed in the truth of her vision D her memory could not be trusted 50 What was the author s attitude toward the physician s argument A He agreed with it B He liked it C He disagreed with it D He disliked it C Another common type of reasoning is the search for causes and results We want 用心 爱心 专心6 to know whether cigarettes really do cause lung cancer what causes malnutrition the decay of cities or the decay of teeth We are equally interested in effects what is the effect of sulphur or lead in the atmosphere of oil spills and raw sewage in rivers and the sea of staying up late on the night before an examination Causal reasoning may go from cause to effect or from effect to cause Either way we reason from what we know to what we want to find out Sometimes we reason from an effect to a cause and then on to another effect Thus if we reason that because the lights have gone out the refrigerator won t work we first relate the effect lights out to the cause power off and then relate that cause to another effect refrigerator not working This kind of reasoning is called for short effect to effect It is quite common to reason through an extensive chain of causal relations When the lights go out we might reason in the following causal chain lights out power off refrigerator not working temperature will rise milk will sour In other words we diagnose a succession of effects from the power failure each becoming the cause of the next Causes are classified as necessary sufficient or contributory A necessary cause is one which must be present for the effect to occur as combustion 燃烧 is necessary to drive a gasoline engine A sufficient cause is one which can produce an effect unaided though there may be more than one sufficient cause a dead battery is enough to keep a car from starting but faulty spark plugs or an empty gas tank will have the same effect A contributory cause is one which helps to produce an effect but cannot do so by itself as running through a red light may help cause an accident though other factors pedestrians or other cars at the crossroads must also be present In establishing or refuting a causal relation it is usually necessary to show the process by which the alleged 声称的 cause produces the effect Such an explanation is called a causal process 51 What the author discussed in the previous section is most probably about A relationships between causes and results B classification of reasoning C some other common types of reasoning D some special type of reasoning 52 According to the passage to do the effect to effect reasoning is to reason A from cause to effect B from effect to cause C from effect to effect and on to cause D from effect to cause and on to another effect 53 A necessary cause is A one without which it is impossible for the effect to occur B one of the causes that can produce the effect C one that is enough to make the effect occur 用心 爱心 专心7 D none of them 54 Your refrigerator is not working and you have found that the electric power has been cut off The power failure is a A necessary cause B sufficient cause C contributory cause D none of them D Everyone knows about straight A students We see
