阅读填空 阅读简答专练 A To cultivate 培养 one s taste in English prose 散文 the most effective way is to read English books extensively Yet one may be at a loss to choose the appropriate books especially as a beginner I would like to share some of my experience My first English novel was Jane Austen s Pride and Prejudice recommended by many English teachers and professors as an ideal book for English learners But I had great difficulty in understanding the novel let alone enjoying it It s not the vocabulary that troubled me but rather the way Austen constructs sentences and her way of thinking which seemed too remote to me at that time My fading enthusiasm was much recovered after reading Hemingway s novel Farewell to Arms I particularly liked his concise 简明 and lively style So my first suggestion is as a beginner you d better choose contemporary novels instead of classical ones You can easily engage yourself in reading get fun out of it and gradually build up confidence I do not mean to exclude 排斥 classical novels forever Actually the second reading of Pride and Prejudice greatly pleased me probably the result of my improved English comprehension It is only that classical novels are less accessible to beginners due to their language styles and social background However reading novels is not the only way to improve your English English essays can at once inform you entertain you The best example is Bertrand Russell s work Its language is plain yet you cannot help feeling the elegance and the unique sense of humor His simple language enables his philosophy 哲理 within the reach of ordinary people Here comes my second suggestion essays are necessary My last advice is never to follow other s opinions blindly however famous or influential the person might be As a saying goes one man s meat is another man s poison With that in mind we are sure to find our favorite writers through reading and develop our fine taste in English Title How to Choose English Books Don t choose 9 but contemporary ones Read 10 Be open to various ideas but think and make a decision of our own B A man had a little daughter an only and much loved child The girl was very lovely and beautiful Every day the girl would sing and dance for him They lived together happily He was very proud of her Whenever talking about his daughter he always thought he was the happiest father in the world He lived for her she was his life So when one day she became seriously ill he became like a crazy man moving heaven and earth to bring about her restoration to health His best efforts however proved unavailing and the child died He felt his own life was gone with his little daughter The father became a bitter recluse 隐居者 shutting himself away from his many friends and refusing every activity that might restore his confidence and bring him back to his normal self But one night he had a dream He was in heaven witnessing a grand pageant of all the little child angels They were marching in a line passing by the Great White Throne Every white robed angelic child carried a candle He noticed that one child s candle was not lighted Then he saw that the child with the dark candle was his own little girl Rushing to her he seized her in his arms kissed her tenderly and then asked How is it darling that your candle alone is unlighted Daddy they often relight it but your tears always put it out Just then he awoke from his dream The lesson was crystal clear and its effects were immediate From that hour on he was not a recluse but communicated freely and cheerfully with his former friends and associates No longer would his darling s candle be extinguished by his useless tears 1 How did the father feel when his daughter died No more than 9 words 2 What did the father do Test 2 A Do you wake up every day feeling too tired If so then a new alarm clock could be just for you The clock is called SleepSmart This device is worn on your head which measures your sleep cycle and analyses your brain wave and then waits for you to be in your lightest phase 阶段 of sleep before waking you up SleepSmart s technology is based on That is as you sleep you sleep through a sequence of sleep state light sleep deep sleep and REM rapid eye movement sleep that repeats approximately every 90 minutes Recent scientific research has learned that the way one feels after waking up is determined not by the length of sleep but rather the sleep cycle from which that person awakens When awoken from deep sleep the sleeper feels tired However if someone wakes up from a lighter stage of sleep no matter how many hours they slept they still wake up recharged and energetic SleepSmart monitors the distinct pattern of brain waves produced during each phase of sleep You program the clock with the latest time at which you want to be wakened The device can measure the electrical activity of the wearer s brain in much the same way as some machines used for medical and research purpose and communicates wirelessly with a clock unit near the bed and the device then timely wakes you up during the last light sleep phase before that The monitoring of sleep phases is the key to solving the problem of over and under sleeping SleepSmart was exactly designed to track the sleep phases And it was invented by a group of students at Brown University in Rhode Island after a friend complained of waking up tired and performing poorly on a test Another function of the device is its noise recording that can be played back later Noise recording is the ideal way to find out the cause of sleep disturbance It is a great tool for adjustment of the sleeping environment Title 1 2 A group of students at Brown University in Rhode Island Theory 3 determines how people feel when waking up
