Monkeys make us smile too because they are creatures full of playful tricks This is why many monkey expressions are about tricky people or playful acts One of these expressions is monkeyshines meaning brain scientists in Ireland recently asked a group of sedentary 久坐的 male college students to take part in a memory test followed by strenuous 紧张的 exercise 6 First the young men watched a rapid fire lineup of photos with the faces and names of strangers After a break they tried to recall the names they had iust seen as the photos again moved quickly across a computer screen Afterward half of the students rode a bicycle at an increasingly strenuous pace until they were exhausted The others sat quietly for 30 minutes Then both groups took the brain teaser test agam Notably the exercised volunteers performed significantly better on the memory test than they had on their first try while the volunteers who had rested did not improve Meanwhile blood samples taken throughout the experiment offered a biological explanation for the increase in memory among the exercisers Immediately after the strenuous activity the cyclists had significantly higher levels of a protein known as BDNF which is to promote the health of nerve cells The men who had sat quietly showed no comparable change in BDNF levels For some time scientists have believed that BDNF helps explain why mental functioning appears to improve with exercise However they haven t fully understood which parts of the brain are affected or how those effects influence thinking The Irish study suggests that the increases in BDNF caused by exercise may play a particular role in lmprovmg memory and recall Other new studies have reached similar conclusions among both people and animals young and old In one interesting experiment published last month Brazilian scientists found that after sedentary elderly rats ran for a mere five minutes or so several days a week tbr live weeks an increase of bioehemieal processes appeared in the memory center of their brains resuhing in inereased production of BDNF there The old exercised animals then performed almost as well as much younger rats oil memory tests 5 The brain teaser test shows that A a good rest can improve one s memory B too much exercise can slow down one s memory 7 C exercise can improve one s memory D cyclists usually have better memory 6 What is the function of the BDNF A To increase the number of brain cells B To remind people of what is likely to be forgotten C To draw one s attention to what is seen D To motivate the brain and refresh one s memory 7 The sedentary elderly rats after five weeks of running A got worn out in the end B performed better in remembering things C reduced the amount of BDNF D stopped biochemical process in the brain 8 The best title for the passage might be A How Exercise Benefits the Brain B Too Much Exercise Harms the Brain C Experiments on the Brain D Exercise Helps One Stay Young 5 8 CDBA 结束 An old German satellite feel to Earth on Saturday after orbiting in space for more than a decade but officials do not yet know where it fell There is currently no confirmation if pieces of debris have reached Earth s surface German aerospace officials said in a statement While the 21 year old satellite broke apart as it re entered Earth s atmosphere German aerospace officials estimated that up to 30 pieces totaling 1 9 tons tons could reach the surface of the planet The satellite which weighs 5 348 pounds was launched into orbit in June 8 1990 to study X ray radiation from stars and black holes The satellite was originally designed for an 19 month mission but it continued to work for far longer than its projected lifetimes In 1998 some parts of the satellite failed and it retired in 1999 It was ini
