society is who should be responsible for our elderly and how to improve their lives It is not only a financial problem but also a question of the system we want for our society I would like to suggest several possible solutions to this problem First employers should take the responsibility for their retired employees To make this possible a percentage of profits should be set aside for this purpose But when a company must take life long responsibility for its employees it may suffer from a commercial disadvantage due to higher employee costs Another way of solving the problem is to return the responsibility to the individual This means each person must save during his working years to pay for his years of retirement This does not seem a very fair model since some people have enough trouble paying for their daily life without trying to earn extra to cover their retirement years This means the government might have to step in to care for the poor In addition the government could take responsibility for the care of the elderly This could be financed through government taxes to increase the level of pensions 养老金 Furthermore some institution should be created for senior citizens which can help provide a comfortable life for them 6 Unfortunately as the present situation in our country shows this is not a truly practical answer The government can seldom afford to care for the elderly particularly when it is busy trying to care for the young One further solution is that the government or social organizations establish some working places especially for the elderly where they are independent To sum up all these options have advantages and disadvantages Therefore it is reasonable to expect that some combination of these options may be needed to provide the care we hope to give to our elderly generations 56 What is the passage mainly about A The problems faced by the old in society B Why we should take responsibility for the old C How we can improve the lives of the old D Where the old can go to get their pensions 57 According to the passage how can the government help to improve the lives of retired people A Set aside some profits to help people with problems after they retire B Increase savings levels of people during their working years C Increase the discounts for food and transport for the old D Make available pensions for those who have retired 58 What is the writer s main purpose in writing this article A To point out the need for government support for old people B To make general readers think of the problems of retired people C To discuss some possible solutions to an important social problem D To instruct retired people on how they can have a happier life B B Expressions about water are almost as common as water itself The expression toto bebe inin hothot waterwater is a very old expression Hot water was used five hundred years ago to mean being in trouble One story says it got that meaning from the custom of throwing extremely hot water down on enemies attacking a castle That no longer happens But we still get in hot water When we are in hot water we are in trouble It can be any kind of trouble serious or not so serious A person who breaks a law can be in hot water with the police A young boy can be in hot water with his mother if he walks in the house with dirty shoes BeingBeing inin deepdeep waterwater is almost the same as being in hot water When you are in deep water you are in a difficult position ToTo keepkeep youryour headhead aboveabove waterwater is a colorful expression that means staying out of debt A company seeks to keep its head above water during economic hard times A man who loses his job tries to keep his head above water until he finds a new job WaterWater overover thethe damdam is another expression about a past event It is something that is finished It cannot be changed The expression comes from the 7 idea that water that has flowed over a dam cannot be brought back again Another common expression to holdhold waterwater is about the strength or weakness of an idea or opinion that you may be arguing about It probably comes from a way of testing the condition of a container If it can hold water it is strong and has no holes in it If your argument can hold water it is strong and does not have any holes ThrowingThrowing coldcold waterwater also is an expression that deals with ideas or suggestions It means to not like an idea For example you want to buy a new car because the old one has some problems But your wife throws cold water on the idea because she says a new car costs too much 59 If Robert says he is in deep water we may guess A he is swimming under the waterB he faces a difficult choice C he is tired of changing shoesD he nearly breaks a law 60 What can you infer from the passage A To be in hot water can only be used to mention serious trouble B Water over the dam is an expression about a future event C Water could be used in the war in the past D All of the expressions using water have unpleasant meanings 61 If your argument doesn t hold water then it is A convincingB weak C logical D disappointing 62 This passage is written mainly to tell us A the use of water B how to use some expressions of water C expressions about water and their meanings D expressions with negative meaning C C On June 26 2009 Michael Jackson saved me On that afternoon I played with my six year old peers 同伴 in Heather Peters backyard I was enjoying my cake when Heather asked me where my sleeping bag was Only then did I know this party was a sleepover The word sleep over to a six year old bed wetter is like what cancer means to an adult But what if I told them I was a bed wetter At least with cancer people gather at your bedside instead of running from it I thought of a way to escape I would explain that I needed my mother s permission to spend the nights But as I called my Mom Heather stood beside me to listen She gave permission Then I would be sleeping in the same living room as the other girls I didn t bring my own nightdress so Mrs Peters offered me Heather s nightdress As the other girls fell into their sweet dreams I tried to stay awake Do I need to go again I ll stay up to go one more time If I I ll be embarrassed Of course I finally fell asleep The next morning I was the first to wake up I was warm I lay in bed 8 frightened and it seemed like hours before the other girls started to wake up I did the only thing I could do I pretended that the bed wetting didn t happen I got up took off Heather s nightdress and changed into my clothes like the other girls Mrs Peters walked into the room and before she could say anything she stepped right onto the pile of my wet nightdress My heart stopped as I watched her face burn red WHO DID THIS She screamed with a look so frightening Should I answer And that was when it happened Mr Peters came in and grabbed his wife Michael Jackson died The news of the King s death shocked Mrs Peters and I got away with it I got home without the other girls knowing what had happened 63 The author had to spend the night at Peter s because A she enjoyed her cake there B her mother asked her to do so C the famous singer Michael Jackson died that night D she and her friends were having a sleepover party 64 Mrs Peters got angry because A she found the wet nightdressB Michael Jackson passed away C her husband was rude to herD all the girls slept at her house 65 From the story we know Mrs Peters was A a crazy womanB a fan of Michael Jackson C a woman for perfectionD a woman who hated to wash nightdress 66 The passage is mainly about A an embarrassing childhood incidentB an adventure experience C a friendship between two girlsD an unfriendly hostess D D Two friends have an argument that breaks up their friendship forever even though neither once can remember how the whole thing got started Such sad events happen over and over in high schools across the country In fact according to an official report on youth violence In our country today the greatest threat to the lives of children and adolescents is not disease or starvation or abandonment but the terrible reality of violence Given that this is the case why aren t students taught to manage conflict the way they are taught to solve math problems drive cars or stay physically fit First of all students need to realize that conflict is unavoidable A report on violence among middle school and high school students indicates that most violent incidents between students begin with a relatively minor insult 侮 辱 For example a fight could start over the fact that one student eats a peanut butter sandwich each lunchtime Laughter over the sandwich can lead to 9 insults which in turn can lead to violence The problem isn t in the sandwich but in the way students deal with the conflict Once students recognize that conflict is unavoidable they can practice the golden rule of conflict resolution 解决 stay calm Once the student feels calmer he or she should choose words that will calm the other person down as well Rude words name calling and accusations only add fuel to the emotional fire On the other hand soft words spoken at a normal sound level can put out the fire before it explodes out of control After both sides have calmed down they can use another key strategy 策略 for conflict resolution listening Listening allows the two sides to understand each other One person should describe his or her side and the other person should listen without interrupting Afterward the listener can ask non threatening questions to clarify the speaker s position Then the two people should change roles Finally students need to consider what they are hearing This doesn t mean trying to figure out what s wrong with the other person It means understanding what the real issue is and what both sides are trying to accomplish For example a shouting match over a peanut butter sandwich might happen because one person thinks the other person is unwilling to try new things Students need to ask themselves questions such as these How did this start What do I really want What am I afraid of As the issue becomes clearer the conflict often simply becomes smaller Even if it doesn t careful thought helps both sides figure out a mutual solution There will always be conflict in schools but that doesn t mean there needs to be violence After students in Atlanta started a conflict resolution program according to Educators for Social Responsibility 64 percent of the teachers reported less physical violence in the classroom 75 percent of the teachers reported an increase in student cooperation and 92 percent of the students felt better about themselves Learning to resolve conflicts can help students deal with friends teachers parents bosses and coworkers In that way conflict resolution is a basic life skill that should be taught in schools across the country 67 From Paragraph 2 we can learn that A violence is more likely to occur at lunchtime 10 B a small conflict can lead to violence C students tend to lose their temper easily D the eating habit
