Parsons 37 who plays the role of Sheldon Cooper in The Big Bang Theory is showing no sign of slowing down The high popularity of the show s fourth season has proved that Cooper the biggest geek on television has still got it Sheldon isn t called a geek for no reason he might have all the characteristics you would hate in a person he s highly intellectual and he s not humble with it he s cynical 愤世嫉俗 he is strictly addicted to 用心 爱心 专心6 certain things and then there s his obvious lack of humor But interestingly it is exactly those characteristics which deliver the character s unique humor that makes millions love him Sheldon is an outcast 被边缘化的人 on some level Bill Prady one of the creators of the show told Entertainment Weekly last month But he s honest and happy with who he is That essentially gets people s love Prady and the other writers made it an early goal to write the character as a real person so as to make him relatable And many fans admit that they see plenty of similarities with their own friends and even themselves The Sheldon character is a hit said Tom Wakeley 21 a junior student of Engineering at the University of Texas He is so inflexible and self important He reminds me of some people that I met in college Zhu Wenbin 22 a junior English major at Tsinghua University has been a fan of the series since the beginning Sheldon represents many of the strange personalities and annoyances that we end up having but not always expressing Zhu said Just like Sheldon we all have a favorite sitting spot on the couch So the awkwardness and eccentricity 怪异 don t look too bad after all In a way he s either frank or obtuse 迟钝 Parsons who plays Sheldon told Los Angeles Times For example Sheldon says things all the time that could hurt someone s feelings According to Parsons it does not show him as a bad person He just says it without pretending to be someone else I think that s a a goodgood lessonlesson he teaches us Parson said 61 Which kind of by the doctor the better Unfortunately the disease is usually first noticed when people complain to their doctors of memory problems That is normally too late for the drugs to do much good A simple and reliable test for Alzheimer s that can be administered to everybody over the age of about 65 before memory loss sets in would therefore be useful Theo Luider of the Erasmus University Medical Centre in Rotterdam and his colleagues think they have found oneone but it works only in women They made their discovery just reported in the Journal of Proteome Research by tapping 用心 爱心 专心9 into a long term continuing study that started in 1995 with 1 077 non demented 非痴呆的 and otherwise healthy people aged between 60 and 90 At the beginning of the project and then during the periods 1997 99 and 2002 04 participants were brought in for a series of investigations physical examinations brain imaging and blood tests During the first ten years of the study 43 of the volunteers developed Alzheimer s disease When Dr Luider compared blood samples from these people with samples from 43 of their fellow volunteers matched for sex and age who had remained Alzheimer s free he found something astonishing Levels of a substance 物质 called pregnancy zone protein PZP had been unusually high even before their symptoms appeared in some of those who went on to develop Alzheimer s disease Those some it turned out were all women On average levels of PZP in those women who went on to develop Alzheimer s were almost 60 higher than those of women who did not In men levels of the protein were the same for both The reason for this curious result seems to be that the brain plaques 大脑 斑块 associated with Alzheimer s disease are themselves turning out PZP Certainly when Dr Luider applied a chemical stain 化学着色剂 specific to that protein to the plaques of dead Alzheimer s patients he found the protein present in them Confusingly though it was there in the plaques of both sexes It is probable that female cells and therefore the plaques of female brains make more of it than male cells do But that remains to be proved Whatever the reason however this result means that women at least may soon be able to tell whether and when they are at risk of Alzheimer s and thus do something about it before they start losing their minds 70 We can learn from paragraph 1 that A Alzheimer s can t be cured with drugs B the five drugs mentioned are unreliable and useless C few doctors are doing a good job in treating Alzheimer s D it s
