Before becoming a Special Olympics coach, she had limited knowledge on the topic of intellectual disabilities (智障), and had the mistaken impression that people with intellectual disabilities couldnt do very much, let alone learn how to skate. When she accepted an invitation to attend the 2001 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Alaska, she said the athletes ability took her breath away. “I couldnt believe it. They were good! I couldnt take my eyes off them.”When she got back home to China, Yao signed up to be a coach.“Their determination to succeed is unbelievable! For example, ”she explained, “it took three years for one of my athletes to be able to skate on the ice. It took one year for her to learn how to put her skates on. The next year, she learned how to walk on the ice. After the third year, she could finally skate. The athlete, her parents and I were jumping for joy. The athlete accomplished something she never thought she could do. As a coach, I never felt so proud of anyone in my life.”Another Special Olympics athlete Li Baiming, 12, competing in speed skating at the 2009 World Games, was inspired to join Special Olympics after joining in the World Summer Games held in Shanghai in 2007. Her mother, Ma Yehong, from Harbin, who accompanied Li to Idaho, said that she was heartbroken when her daughter was found with intellectual disabilities at six months.“But shes my sunshine girl now,” said Ma. “Since Special Olympics came into her life, she has been happy and more interested in everything. She has so many friends now. She meets them at competitions. And if they live far away, Li chats with them online. ”Ma said that the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games were the best thing that happened to China. “Thanks to those Games, more people are paying attention to those with intellectual disabilities and want to do something to help them,” said Ma.Yao recognizes the power of sports for athletes like Li.“They are really able to grow, make friends and be proud of their achievements for the first time, ”says Yao. “Ill definitely be a Special Olympics coach for life.”1What did Yao Nan know about intellectual disabilities before she attended the 2001 Special Olympics?AShe thought they could do something special.BShe believed they could learn to skate.CShe thought they couldnt do very much.DShe believed they would perform wonderfully in the games.2Yao Nan gave one example of_to show the determination of people with intellectual disabilities to succeed.Ahow long it took the child to learn to skateBhow the child learnt to put on the skatesChow the child was taught to skateDhow happy they were when the child could finally skate3How many Games that Li Baiming took part in are mentioned in the passage?A1. Cancer cells are notoriously difficult to see, even under highpowered magnification. The glasses are designed to make it easier for surgeons to distinguish cancer cells from healthy cells, helping to ensure that no tumor cells are left behind during surgery.“Were in the early stages of this technology, and more development and testing will be done, but were certainly encouraged by the potential benefits to patients,” said breast surgeon Julie Margenthaler, MD, an associate professor of surgery at Washington University. “Imagine what it would mean if these glasses got rid of the need for followup surgery and the associated pain, inconvenience and anxiety.”Current standard of care requires surgeons to remove the tumor and some neighboring tissue that may or may not include cancer cells. The samples are sent to a pathology(病理) lab and viewed under a microscope. If cancer cells are found in neighboring tissue, a second surgery is often recommended to remove additional tissue that is also checked for the presence of cancer. The glasses could reduce the need for additional surgical procedures and following stress on patients, as well as time and expense.Margenthaler said about 20 to 25 percent of breast cancer patients who have lumps removed require a second surgery because current technology doesnt adequately show the extent of the disease during the first operation.“Our hope is that this new technology will reduce or ideally eliminate the need for a second surgery,” she said.In a study published in the Journal of Biomedical Optics, researchers noted that tumors as small as 1 mm in diameter (the thickness of about 10 sheets of paper) could be detected.Ryan Fields, MD, a Washington University assistant professor of surgery and surgeon of Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center, plans to wear the glasses later this month when he operates to remove a melanoma from a patient. He said he welcomes the new technology, which theoretically could be used to visualize any type or cancer.“A limitation of surgery is that its not always clear to the naked eye the distinction between normal tissue and cancerous tissue,” Fields said.“With the glasses developed by Samuel Achilefu, PhD, professor of Washington University, we can better identify the tissue that must be removed.”5The ultimate goal of developing the new technology is _.Ato distinguish cancer cells from healthy onesBto inspire hope for life in cancer patientsCto make sure no cancer cell is left behindDto reduce the risk of cancer surgery6The underlined word “eliminate” in Paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to _.Ameet BremoveCfeel Dresist7What can be inferred from the passage?AThe glasses are developed by Ryan Fields and Samuel Achilefu.BThe glasses glow blue when finding tissues including cancer cells.CTumors as small as 1 cm in diameter could be detected by the glasses.DMuch remains to be done before the technology can be widely used.8Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?ASpecial glasses help surgeons“see” cancerBA new technology has been used in surgeryCPatients will benefit from a new technologyDCancer is no longer a threat to people答 案.1. appreciation“欣赏,感激”;significance“重要性”;satisfaction“满意”;guidance“指导”。 as a result“结果”;on the whole“大体上”;as a matter of fact“事实上”。 hold on“不挂断”;hang on“坚持,不挂断”;get over“爬过,克服,熬过,恢复”。 duty“责任,职责”;tradition“传统”;hobby“兴趣”。 根据otherwise和was可知,此处表示的是与过去事实相反的虚拟语气,故用would/could/might have done结构,再结合选项可知应选C。 gradually“逐渐地”;accurately“精确地”;familiarly“熟悉地”;frequently“经常地”。 be honoured for .“因而被授予荣誉”;contributions to .“对的贡献”。 how come“怎么会,怎么可能”;what for“为什么”;so what“那又怎样”;why not“为什么不呢”。 故选A。
