popularization of foreign language communicative teaching methods the diversity exists in the learners There are many factors in foreign language learning which influence on language learning However non intelligence factors play an important role in English learning as well The non intelligence factors that effect language learning include gender age interests personality willpower motivation and so forth Among them personality on foreign language learning is the most influential This paper presents a preliminary exploration into the influence of personality on several professional skills by searching into 120 English learners The result shows that the personality has little effects on the learning of the integrated English However the extroverted students are good at spoken English and English writing while the introverted students are good at reading comprehension English grammar and English listening Key words personality diversity introversion extroversion professional skill of development of economic globalization English has become a compulsory basic course for many university students in our country It not only asks that students can speak English rightly on the basic of mastering grammar knowledge but also speak fluently at different time places and occasions Many researchers has made some surveys on the influence of language learners personality on English learning and have given many suggestions on how to teach students in accordance with different personality students But they seldom give some advice from the viewpoint of learners So the author probes preliminary into the influence extent of personality on English grammar English listening spoken English English writing and integrated English by searching into 120 English learners This paper aims to research the influence of personality on several professional skills which include English grammar English listening reading comprehension spoken English English writing and the integrated English and gives some useful suggestions from the point of view of language learners and teachers 1 1 The Background of Research At present the views of studying the importance of teaching methods gradually turn from objective ones to subjective ones that is to say the research of teaching methods has changed focus from teachers to learners In the process of teaching a fact can be found that the different learners in the same teaching circumstances may come into being totally different teaching effects Thus it is not hard to find the differences among the learners These factors which influence foreign language learning are becoming increasingly important Non intelligence factors play an essential role in English learning The non intelligence factors that effect people learning include gender age interests personality willpower motivation and so on Among them personality on foreign language learning is the most influencial About the importance of the personality Song 1994 thinks that personality is the most important factor in non intelligence factors It is the necessary to make up the ability shortage which can be understood that good personality is the essential condition in the process of getting career success Under the condition of equal ability of the leaners and people who are The Influence of Personality Diversity on English Learning Taking the Senior Students of Kai Li University Majoring in English for Example 2 confident and diligent have creative spirit strong perseverance and must make great progress in their career success However people who are lazy inferior and hidebound will be destined to fail in their career People who have common ability but have largely personality diversity may have great success while the people with strong ability but have the little personality diversity may have less success So there is no doubt that deep study which the influences personality factors on English learning results is very significant As matter of fact as Wang 1990 has pointed out that teachers had took the personality characteristic of students with foreign language linked The students who do well in foreign language learning usually think that they are confident and optimistic responsible and mature But the students who are not good at foreign language learning usually think that they are timid careless introverted nervous and short of confidence But the impression is only to from the teaching observation As for whether they are right it will need to confirm by means of severe experiment Chastian inquired into eighty students of speaking French seventy two students of speaking German and seventy seven students of speaking Spanish finding that the open extent of personality of students is notable significantly relevant to the result of German and Spanish Wang 1990 Strong by means of the investigation on thirteen children of speaking Spanish finds that extroverted personality is helpful to cultivate the development of the natural communication language of children Rod Ellis 1994 But many experiments do not find the connection some of them even get contrary result Smart with his fellow workers looks into the relationship between the grades of foreign language and the social extent They did an experiment which takes the university students as the subject of test The results of learning are divided into three groups on the basis of high grades central grades and low grads The study results show that the result of enjoying communicating is not high Rod Ellis 1994 also once talked about that Bush by means of the investigation between the youngsters in Japan and two adults groups English learners found that there was no close connection between the extroverted personality and introverted students and others factors such as cognitive style emotional traits age learning motivation and attitude intelligence and so on would have influence on English learning Zhang 1992 The aims of the research is to understand whether personality has effects on several professional skills including English grammar English writing English listening reading comprehension spoken English and the integrated English finding out the questions that extroverted students and introverted students have in English learning 2 Literature Review This part presents the related theoretic researches on personality It is made of two parts The first part is the theories related to personality which includes some different researchers definitions about the personality from different points The second part deals with the relationship between extroversion or introversion and foreign language proficiency which is composed of some different statements about extroversion or introversion of different researchers from different points 2 1 The Definition of Personality The personality factors are very important factors that influence learners English learning Many psycho linguists pay more attention on the relationship between personality and English learning Personality is the relatively stable but certain variable the psychological characteristic which a person performance at his attitude towards the reality and the behavior means Song 1994 C G Jung the psychology in Switzerland thinks that the activities of Libido in people life are the basis of all behavior changes thus the personality is divided into extroversion and introversion by C G Jung in accordance with what the activities tendencies of Libido in people life are inclined to external environment or internal environment So the concept of extroversion and introversion were firstly introduced into the field of learning by C G Jung Everyone has his or her own respective personality characteristic which has there are two different opinions Rod Ellis 1994 The one is that the extroverted students have an advantage in learning foreign language Because they are good at social communication they have the stronger basic international communication skill short for BICS what is more the tendency of social communication is helpful to obtain more exercise opportunities and get more language information while another one is that the introverted students have an advantage in learning foreign language Because they have an advantage in cognitive academic language ability short for CALP They usually spend much time in reading and writing thus they are easy to acquire success in academic language ability Wang 2000 From the book Longman Dictionary of Language Teaching Applied Linguistic 2000 the following information can be found Extrovert is a person whose conscious interests and energies are more often directed outwards other people and events than towards the person himself and his own inner experience Such a personality type is contrasted with others and is often preoccupied with his or her inner feeling thoughts and experience P 167 Ao 2008 According to Eysenck s personality theory all traits can be subsumed within three basic personality dimensions extroversion or introversion neuroticism and psychoticism He based his conclusion on that some elements subordination to a supertrait hierarchically 2 2 The Definition of Extroversion and Introversion Extroverts are sociable like parties have many friends and need excitement They are sensation seeker and risk takers like practical jokes and are lively and active Conversely introverts are quiet prefer reading to meeting people have few but close friends and usually avoid excitement Extroverted learners will outperform their introverted counterparts in acquiring basic interpersonal communication skills Introverted learners will do better at developing cognitive and academic language proficiency However the hypotheses don t get much support Metraux 1964 reports that those successful English speaking children are usually more talkative outgoing The Influence of Personality Diversity on English Learning extroverted Spanish speaking adolescent became proficient in English oral fluently more rapidly than the introverted students Extroverts will be wiling to try to communicate even if they are not sure they will succeed Feng 2009 Extroverts are believed to achieve more than introverts Because extroverts are more social like meeting people they are more active in the participation of the language learning activities thus they can seek more learning opportunities and have more language exposures yet introverts are somewhat shy avoid meeting people They are more passive in the participation of the language learning activities thus they are more learning opportunities and have less language exposures Wang 2002 Extroversion is the extent to which a person has a deep seated need to receive ego enhancement self esteem and sense of wholeness from other people as opposed to receiving that affirmation within oneself Extroverts usually need other people in order to feel good while introversion is the extent to which a person derives a sense of wholeness and fulfillment apart from a reflection of this self from other people contrary to our stereotypes introverts can have an inner strength of character that extroverts do not have Brown H Douglaas 1994 Extroverts usually behave that they are lively and optimistic enthusiastic and generous not to stick to trifles good at communicating exposed emotion reaction rapidly able to adapt environmental changes not to mind others evaluation Some of them are over indiscreet and undisciplined while introverts usually behave that they regard themselves as targets they are deep and steady cautious brooding over adequately But they are not good at communicating hard to adapt environmental changes slow response and they lay emphasis on the evaluation from others Some of them are over cautious indifferent and dissociable Wang 2008 Extroverted students speak out boldly without engagement in class So they will take more chance to speak dare not express their own opinions Even though they are puzzled they are not willing to express because they are afraid of that other people will laugh at them They are usually short of confidence when they answer questions and they mind the mistakes have appeared in class So they are usually anxious in class Shu Zhang Lu 2009 3 The Process of Study and Statistics 3 1 The Significance of the Research The significance of the research is to understand the influence of personality diversity on English learning of the students in Kai Li university majoring in English and respectively to give some suitable suggestions and enlightenment of personality diversity on English teaching from two perspectives of teachers and learners 3 2 The Subjects of Research The subjects of research are 120 senior students of Kai Li university majoring in English among whom there are 36 male students and 84 female students in the study 3 3 The Method of Research This part presents the related research questions and research methods This research is intended to answer the following questions 1 How to define the introverted personality and extroverted personality 2 How to analyse the relationship between personality and several professional skills including English grammar English writing English listening reading comprehension spoken English and the integrated English The research methods are the following First the author used the method of quantitative research to define of the personality on extroverted students and introverted students of senior students of Kai Li university majoring in English by means of questionnaire Second the author got the final examination results of several professional skills of senior students of Kai Li university majoring in English from the reference room of English language department The several professional skills were that they had majored The author used the method of qualitative research to analyse the final The Influence of Personality the Data 4 1 The Statistic and Analysis of Extroverted Personality and Introverted Personality by Means of Questionnaire The author borrows the questionnaire of Shu Yanyan Zhang Qiangqiang Lu Tingting about the definition of introverted and extroverted personality in The Influence of Personality Tendency on Foreign Language Learning The questionnaire was designed on the basis of the definition about extroverted personality and introverted personality in China combining with the educational conditions of China and it refers to the common problems of English learners The author let students answer the questions on the questionnaire about the definition of introverted and extroverted personality The questionnaire has altogether ten questions with three choices for each question every
