Today we will look at some of them from Lewis Carrolls famous novel Alice in Wonderland in detail. The story is about a young girl falling down a rabbit hole. When she finally lands, she finds herself in a strange world and meets some strange characters. The first character Alice meets is the White Rabbit, who runs past her and says some strange words. Alice chases(追赶)him, and that is where her adventures begin. In English, chasing a white rabbit means chasing an impossible clue and finding yourself in a misleading situation. Then, as she runs after the rabbit, she falls down the rabbit hole into Wonderland. To fall down the rabbit hole can mean to enter a confusing(令人困惑的)situation. However, usually we use this expression to mean we get interested in something to the point of distraction(分神).It often happens by accident and is about something not that meaningful. Later in the story, Alice meets the March Hare and the Hatter at a crazy tea party. Hares(野兔)have long been thought to behave excitedly in March, which is their mating (交配)season. Scientifically, this may not be true. But to be mad as a March Hare means that someone is completely mad, or crazy. The expression mad as a Hatter also means to be completely crazy. Of the two,mad as a Hatter is more common. But dont tell the March Hare. Who knows how he will react(反应)! Near the end of the story, Alice meets the Queen of Hearts. A woman who is called a Queen of Hearts likes controlling others and always tries to control everything and everyone around her.4. When Mary turned on the TV, she chose to watch the talk show programme as usual.C. When Jim was looking for a sport book online, he lost himself in many reports on superstars. D . When Lily was thinking about how to solve a math problem. she came up with a good idea.5. According to the passage, the expression to be mad as a March Hare . A. describes how hares behave in March B. shows hares characteristics in a scientific way C. is used more often than the expression mad as a Hatter D. has the same meaning as the expression mad as a Hatter6.Which character in“Alice in Wonderland” wants others to obey his or her orders in every situation? The writer mainly wants to in this passage.A. introduce a famous novel and its language style B. introduce a famous writer Lewis Carroll and his novelsC. explore some English expressions from a famous novel D. explain why many expressions in English come from novels C To get an extra 14 years of life, dont smoke, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, exercise regularly and drink alcohol in a proper amount. That is according to a study published this Monday in the Public Library of Science Medicine Journal . After tracking more than 20, 000 people aged 45 to 79 years in the UK from about 1993 to 2008, Kay-Tee Khaw of the University of Cambridge and his colleagues found that people who adopted these four healthy habits lived an average of 14 years longer than who didnt. Were known for a long time that these behaviors are good things to do, but weve not seen this benefit before, said Susan Jebb, head of Nutrition and Health at Britains Medical Research Council. The benefit was also seen regardless of whether or not people were fat and social class they came from. Study participants(参与者) scored a point each for not smoking, regular physical activity, eating five servings of fruits and vegetables a day and moderate alcohol intake. Public health experts said they hoped the study would inspire governments to introduce policies helping people to adopt these changes. But because the study only observed people rather than testing specific changes, it would be impossible to conclude that people who suddenly adopted these healthy behaviors would surely gain 14 years. We cant say that any person could gain 14 years by doing these things, said Dr Tim Armstrong, a physical activity expert at the World Health Organization. The 14 years is an average across the population of whats theoretically(埋论上地) possible. Most people know that things like a good diet matter and that smoking isnt good for them, Susan Jebb said. We need to work on providing people with much more practical support to help them change. 8. We can infer from the passage that _ .A. people are unaware of the harm of their bad habitsB. drinking alcohol does no harm to our health and helps us live longerC. the government should make people change their bad habits by forceD. not everyone will live 14 years longer by adopting the four healthy habits9. The study observed people as well as tested specific changes.C. There s no need for people under 45 to adopt these good habits.D. Only those from first class can benefit from these healthy behaviors.11. What should be the best title of this passage?A. Smoking Cuts You 14 YearsB. How to Live a Healthier LifeC. Africa has a long history and a rich culture, and this is shown in traditional dress. The three coloursred, gold and green, are often commonly(通常地)used in the clothing. The first colour represents the blood of millions of people who fought for freedom; the second, rich resources of the African earth; and the third, the grassland of home.Because clothing has strong social meanings, people are very careful in choosing what to wear. It would be a serious mistake to wear the wrong clothes, or to dress in the wrong way. For example, in Ghana, a woman should wear her waistband(腰带)differently according to the importance of the social event.Traditional dress also tells us about everyday life. African designs are famous for loose(宽松的)clothing. The temperature there can be very high during the daytime but very low at night, so it requires that the clothes are comfortable for daily life.Today although more and more young people like wearing Western clothes, especially in big cities in Africa, traditional African dress is still quite important. This is because it has deep cultural meanings.Traditional Dress in AfricaDifferent coloursThe three most 1 colours used in clothing are red, gold and green.Different colours 2 for different things: the blood of freedom fighters, resources of the earth and the grassland of home.Social meaningsBecause clothing has strong social meanings, people have to choose what to wear 3 .Women in Ghana even wear different waistbands according to how important the event is.
