I had worked as a box boy at a supermarket in Los Angeles. People came to the counter (柜台) and you put things in their bags for them. And carried things to their cars. It was hard work. While working, you wear a plate with your name on it. I once met someone I knew years ago. I remembered his name and said, Mr. Castle, how are you? We talked about this and that. As he left, he said, It was nice talking to you, Brett. I felt great, he remembered me. Then I looked down at my name plate. Oh, no. He didnt remember me at all. He just read the name plate. I wish I had put Irving down on my name plate. If hed have said, Oh yes, Irving, how could I forget you? Id have been ready for him. Theres nothing personal here. The manager and everyone else who were a step above the box boys often shouted orders. One of these was: you couldnt accept tips. Okay, Im outside and I put the bags in the car. For a lot of people, the natural reaction is to take a quarter and give it to me. Id say, Im sorry, I cant. Theyd get angry. When you give someone a tip, youre sort of being polite. You take a quarter and you put it in their hand and you expect them to say, Oh, thanks a lot. When you say, Im sorry, I cant. they feel a little put down. They say, No one will know. And they put it in your pocket. You say, I really cant.It gets to a point where you almost have to hurt a person physically to prevent him from tipping you. It was not in agreement with the stores belief in being friendly. Accepting tips was a friendly thing and made the customer feel good. I just couldnt understand the strangeness of some peoples ideas. One lady actually put it in my pocket, got in the car, and drove away. I would have had to throw the quarter at her or eaten it or something. I had decided that one year was enough. Some people needed the job to stay alive and fed. I guess I had the means and could afford to hate it and give it up. 21. What can be the best title for this text? A. The Art of Taking Tips B. Why I Gave up My Job C. How Hard Life Is for Box Boys D. Getting along with Customers 22. From the second paragraph, we can infer that _. A. Irving was the writers real name B. Mr. Castle mistook Irving for Brett C. with a name plate, people can easily start talking D. the writer didnt like the impersonal part of his job 23. The box boy refused to accept tips because _. A. customers only gave small tips B. he didnt want to fight with the customers C. the store didnt allow the box boys to take tips D. some customers had strange ideas about tipping 24. The underlined phrase put down in the third paragraph probably means _. Why do business institutions possess this great prestige? One reason is that Americans view business as being more firmly based on the aim of competition than other institutions in society. Since competition is seen as the major source of progress and prosperity by most Americans, competitive business institutions are respected. Competition is not only good in itself, it is the means by which other basic American values such as individual freedom, equality of opportunity, and hard work are protected. Competition protects the freedom of the individual by ensuring that there is no monopoly(垄断)of power. In contrast to one, all-powerful government, many businesses compete against each other for advantage. Theoretically, if one business tries to take unfair advantage of its customers, it will lose to competing business which treats its customers more fairly. Where many businesses compete for the customers dollars, they can not afford to treat them like inferiors or slaves. A contrast is often made between business, which is competitive, and government, which is a monopoly. Because business is competitive, many Americans believe that is more supportive of freedom than government, even though government leaders are elected by the people and business leaders are not. Many Americans believe, then, that competition is as important as, or even more important than, democracy (民主) in preserving freedom.28. The statement The business of America is business probably means_.A. The business institutions in America are concerned with commerceB. Business problems are of great importance to the American governmentC. Business is of primary concern to AmericansD. America is a great power in world business29. Americans believe that they can realize their personal values mainly _. A. by way of competition B. through doing businessC. when given equality of opportunity D. by protecting their individual freedom 30. Who can benefit from business competition?A. Honest businessmen B. Both businessmen and their customersC. People with aims of equality and freedom. D. Both business institutions and government 31. Government is believed to differ sharply from business because of _.A. its complete control of powerB. its role in protecting basic American values C. its democratic way of exercising leadership D. its function in preserving personal freedomDLanguage as a System of SymbolsOf all systems of symbols(符号), language is the most highly developed. It has been pointed out that human beings, by agreement, can make anything stand for anything. Human beings have agreed, in the course of centuries of mutual(相互的)dependency, to let the various noises that they can produce with their lungs, throats, tongues, teeth, and lips systematically stand for certain happenings in their nervous systems. We call that system of agreements language. There is no necessary connection between the symbol and that which it stands for. Just as social positions can be symbolized by feathers worn on the head, by gold on the watch chain, or by a thousand other things according to the culture we live in, so the fact of being hungry can be symbolized by a thousand different noises according to the culture we live in.However obvious these facts may appear at first glance, they are actually not so obvious as they seem except when we take special pains to think about the subject. Symbols and the things they stand for are independent of each other, yet we all have a way of feeling as if, and sometimes acting as if, there were necessary connections. For example, there are people who feel that foreign languages are unreasonable by nature; foreigners have such funny names for things, and why cant they call things by their right names? This feeling exhibits itself most strongly in those English and American tourists who seem to believe that they can make the natives of any country understand English if they shout loud enough. Like the little boy who is reported to have said: “Pigs are called pigs because they are such dirty animals,” they feel that the symbol is inherently(内在地) connected in some way with the things symbolized.32. Language is a highly developed system of symbols because human beings _.A. have made use of language for centuries B. use our nervous systems to support languageC. have made various noises stand for any eventsD. can make anything stand for anything by agreement33. What can we conclude from Paragraph 2?A. Different noises may mean different things. B. Our culture determines what a symbol stands for.C. The language we use symbolizes our social positions.D. Our social positions determine the way we are dressed.34. In Paragraph 3, “take special pains” probably means “_”.A. take our time B. try very hard C. are very unhappy D. feel especially painful35. The example of the little boy is used to show that _.A. adults often learn from their young B. “pig” is a dirty word because pigs are dirtyC. words are not connected with the things they stand forD. people sometimes have wrong ideas about how language works第二节 (共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。 There are all sorts of good sensible reasons to avoid getting angry. Not only does it make us feel bad , it also makes us do stupid things without noticing the risks and it can be self-destructive ( 毁坏性的) . 36 But like all emotions, anger has its purposes, which can be used for good effects.Anger is a motivating force. In fact anger itself is a kind of positive energy and a powerful motivating force. _ 37 When we see something as beneficial, we want it more when we are angry. So, when used right, constructive anger can make us feel strong and powerful and help push us on to get what we want. 38 It may sound like a strange thing to say, but angry people have something in common with happy people. Thats because both tend to expect favorable results. By comparison those experiencing more fear are more pessimistic (悲观的) about the future and expect further terrors.Anger can benefit relationships.Society tells us anger is dangerous and we should hide it .The problem is that when we hide our anger, our partner doesnt know hes done something wrong. And so he keeps doing it. _ 39 The expression of anger, if reasonable and aimed at finding a solution, can actually benefit and strengthen relationships. Anger provides self-understanding. Anger can also provide understanding into ourselves, if we allow it. Getting angry leads to a positive outcome. Anger help discover our own faults. If we can notice when we get angry and why, then we can learn what to do to improve our lives. 40 AAnger reduces violence.BAngry people are more optimistic.CAnger can encourage self-change.DAnd that doesnt do our relationship any good.EThats because its a very strong social signal that a situation needs to be solved.FMost of us treat our anger as though its unreasonable, unshowable and unmentionable.GAnger can turn us on and thus push on towards our goals in the face of problems and barriers. What is intelligence(智力) anyway?
