enabledme to defend myposition on abortion more effectively Attending this convention aomplishedtwo things It provedmy mitmentto my belief in that I tookthe initiativeto strengthenand supportmyopinion student I wentto a high schoolwith acurriculum that was aschallenging forme as any courseI havetaken incollege This high school wasunique becausewe studiedeverything fromthe originof WesternCivilization tomodern day Westernthought Another uniquefeature of thisschoolwas that at the endofour senioryear wehad togive anoral presentationin frontof ahost of panelists fromSt John s Collegein Santa Fe NewMexico This experiencehelped medevelop myability tothink criticallyand presenta cogentthesis It forcedme togrow not only as a student but moreimportantly as anindividual When Igraduated fromhigh schoolI rebelledagainst traditionaleducation anddecided not to applyto college This decisionwas to the greatdismay of myparents who hadentered collegeimmediately afterhigh school With muchresistance I enrolledat SantaFe CommunityCollege This was just tosatisfy myparents wishes and I spent onlyone semesterthere Although I wanted tostudy andcontinue tolearn I yearnedto reachout topeople andfind adifferent modeof study one whichwould allowme tounderstand myselfbetter so that I could relatebetter to the worldaround me With thisgoal I decided to attendthe NewMexico Academyof Massageand AdvancedHealing Arts The schoolprovided me with a unique mind body balancethat hashelped mebee a more well rounded person I studiedsubjects thatranged fromAnatomy andPhysiology toYoga andTai Chi After graduating I gota jobat theSantaFeSport MedicineInstitute asa PhysicalTherapy Assistant I usedMassage techniquesto help people whowere injuredin autoaidents orsporting events This typeof workallowed me to directlyhelppeople the peopleI massagedtold me that thepain theyexperienced priorto themassage hadsubsided Relieving thepains of these peoplenurtured inmeasense ofpurpose In addition it increasedmy interestin EasternPhilosophy making mewant tolearn moreabout Asia I began to readmany classicalChinese textsto furthermy knowledgeabout ChinesePhilosophy Soon I withpeople inChinese I wasinvited to teach Englishataprivate schoolfor children but Itold theschool that I hadno teachingexperience The schoolinformed me that ifI tooka shortteaching trainingclass I wouldbe readytoteach And theyeven offeredto payme for the trainingclasses However I refusedto bepaid for the training The schoolwas soimpressed bythis thatafter Ipleted thetraining they appointedme directorof theEnglish Languageprogram I wasastounded bythe generosityand honestythat Ireceived fromthe people in Taiwan This wasa trulyremarkable experience In Taiwan I livedwith aChinese family This theUnited Statesto pletemy degree My timeTaiwan taughtme somuch aboutmyself and itgave metheperspectiveto seethings fromboth aWestern andEastern pointof view Since myreturnto theUnitedStates my
