Tasks and ProcedureThe first class:Pre-reading tasksStep One: Lead-in About the Author: Leonard R. SaylesDr. Leonard R. Sayles received his doctorate from MIT in Industrial Economics. He has been a professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Business for four decades; now Emeritus.In a series of research projects and books, he helped transform conventional views of business leadership. His widely-cited leadership studies won a number of national awards in America, and many were republished in Europe, Latin America, and Asia.He advised the head of NASA in its formative years and published a major study of its management methods sponsored by the National Academy of Science. He also has been a consultant to major American corporations.He lives with his wife in Dobbs Ferry, New York, and Naples, Florida.Step Two: Warming up1)Show two pictures to students in order to bing up the topic 2)Tell the students some famous peoples attitudes toward workinga.It is no use doing what you like; you have got to like what you do. - Winston Churchill, British prime minister b. Work is worth doing if worth doing well. - Thomas Carlyle, British historianAttention:Let the students understand the meaning of these sentences.Step Three: DiscussionEach group of four for a discussion of these ideas, and summarized the views .After 10 minutes choose a representative tell the other students the results of the discussions (2)The second class: While-reading tasksAbout the passage:Part one: The Development of Work 1) Ancient Greek At that time work was restricted to slaves and to those few free citizens who had not yet accumulated adequate independent resources. The real citizens of Greece whom Plato and others talked about expected to spend their time in free discussion and contemplation. First show the students pictures about that time Slaves in ancient timesPlato and his students are discussing and contemplatingThen tell the students some interesting stories about that time.2) The Middle Ages work was thought of as a punishment for the sins of man.3) Historically, work has been associated with slavery and sin, compulsion and punishment.4) Nowadays Work is the opportunity to realize ones potential. Instance: Many psychiatrists heading mental health clinics have observed its therapeutic effect.(3)The third class: While-reading tasksAbout the passage:Part two: Why Work Be Important to human satisfaction 1) Pride in Accomplishment The human being craves a sense of being accomplished, of being able to do things, with his hand, with his mind, with his will. e.g. a. craftsman(carpenter or bricklayer or die-maker) They stand aside and admire the product of his personal skill. b. engineers They received a substantial personal payoff from their efforts in the knowledge that they could tackle tough, almost insurmountable problems, yet overcome them. c. simple jobs(Cleaning men and janitors) Their job looks uncomplicated, there are countless subtleties one needs to know. Tips: Were often misled by the gripes and complaints surrounding difficult work. (wrong) Grousing is just part of working. (correct) People should to store up energy, to rest and save themselves as much as possible. (wrong) Energy expenditure is satisfying. (correct)2) Esprit de corps Aspect one: The sense of belonging to an accomplished work group that both outsiders and insiders recognize can handle itself with extreme virtuosity is one of the distinctive satisfactions of the world of work. e.g. a. military The men will make enormous sacrifices to help their buddies and they have developed strong loyalties. b. athlete People can congratulate each other. In a sense success breeds success; the successful group becomes more unified. Aspect two: Relationships among people at work tend to be simple .a. Human relations at work are easier, they are more regular and predictable and thus simpler to adjust to .b. The work group also gently pressures its members to learn how to adjust to one another(4)The forth class:Post-reading tasks Step One: Translate Ask some students to translate the following sentances. Step Two: Explain Important Wordsa. Its not difficult to understand the tarnished reputation. Historically, work has been associated with slavery and sin, compulsion and punishment.
