winter flying in a V formation you might think about what scientists have discovered as to why they fly that way As each bird flaps its wings it creates an uplift 上升力 for the bird immediately following By flying in a V formation the whole group adds at least 71 greater flying range 航程 than if each bird flies on its own People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going more quickly and easily because they are traveling on the push of one another When a wild goose falls out of the formation it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go alone and quickly tries to get back into the formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front When the head goose gets tired it flies back into the formation and another goose flies to the front It is wise to take turns doing difficult jobs whether it be people or wild geese flying south Wild geese honk 发出雁叫声 from behind to inspire those up front to keep up their speed What can we learn from this When a wild goose gets sick or wounded by gunshots and falls out of the formation two other geese will fall out with that goose and follow it down to lend help and protection They will stay with the fallen goose until it is able to fly or until it dies and only then will they go on with their own or with another formation to catch up with their group 56 Wild geese fly in a V formation in order to A protect themselves from danger B fly more quickly and easily C help the sick and wounded D fly much higher in the sky 57 If a wild goose falls out of the V formation A the other geese will call it back B the other geese will fly with it C it will try to get back into the group D it will fall behind the whole group 58 What can we learn from the fifth paragraph A We should try to lead others to move forward B We should give people facing difficulties encouragement C We should believe in those who offer us help D We should care more about the old and sick 59 When a wild goose becomes sick or is wounded A it will be left alone and will fall on the ground B the whole group will stop flying C two other geese will stay with it to offer help D other geese will honk to give it encouragement 60 What do we know from the passage A A wild goose can help the one following it by flapping its wings B A person who works alone can work better than one who doesn t C It is not good for wild geese to take turns being the head goose D The wild geese that fall behind are unlikely to catch up with their group B A good book for children should simply be a good book in its own right says Mollie Hunter Born and brought up near Edinburgh Mollie has devoted her talents to writing primarily for young people She firmly believes that there is and should always be a wider audience for any good book whatever its main market is In Mollie s opinion it is necessary to make full use of language and she enjoys telling a story which is what every writer should be doing If you aren t telling a story you re a very dead writer indeed she says With the chief function of a writer being to entertain Mollie is indeed an entertainer I have this great love of not only the meaning of language but of the music of language she says This love goes back to early childhood I ve told stories all my life I had a school teacher who used to ask us what we would like to be when we grew up and because my family always had dogs and I was very good at handling them I said I wanted to work with dogs and the teacher always said Nonsense Mollie dear you ll be a writer So finally I thought that this woman must have something since she was a good teacher and I decided when I was nine that I would be a writer This childhood intention is described in her novel A Sound of Chariots which although written in the third person is clearly autobiographical 自传体的 and gives a picture both of Mollie s ambition and her struggle towards its achievement Thoughts of her childhood inevitably 不可避免地 brought thoughts of the time when her home was still a village with buttercup meadows and strawberry fields sadly now covered with modern houses I was once taken back to see it and I felt that somebody had lain dirty hands all over my childhood I ll never go back she said Never When I set one of my books in Scotland she said I can recall my romantic feelings as a child playing in those fields or watching the village blacksmith at work And that s important because children now know so much so early that romance can t exist for them as it did for us 61 What does Mollie Hunter feel about the nature of a good book A It should not aim at a narrow audience B It should be attractive to young readers C It should be based on original ideas D It should not include too much conversation 62 In Mollie Hunter s opinion which of the following is one sign of a poor writer A Being poor in life experience B Being short of writing skills C The weakness of description D The absence of a story 63 What do we learn about Mollie Hunter as a young child A She didn t expect to become a writer B She didn t enjoy writing stories C She didn t have any particular ambitions D She didn t respect her teacher s views 64 In comparison with children of earlier years Mollie feels that children now are A more intelligent B better informed C less eager to learn D less interested in reality 65 What s the writer s purpose in this text A To share her enjoyment of Mollie Hunter s books B To introduce Mollie Hunter s work to a wider audience C To provide information for Mollie Hunter s existing readers D To describe Mollie Hunter s most successful books C When the Japanese attacked America s ships at Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941 they did it secretly The makers of the movie Pearl Harbor have behaved differently The noise about Pearl Harbor made by Disney has reached its highest point with its premiere 首次公演 before the movie opens in cinemas across the US at the start of the Memorial Day holiday weekend a time to recall national heroes who sacrificed their lives on the battlefield As Ben Affleck is the main star the movie seems sure to become a success in the United States at least At almost three hours in length it promises to be a good old Hollywood movie There is a love story Affleck and his co star Josh Hartnett both fall in love with the navy nurse Kate Beckinsale and of course there is much human courage and love of country It s certain that Disney will be accused of changing history The showing of actual events in a movie always causes arguments Bits of the story are deliberately not mentioned in the movie It does not address the theory held by some historians that President Franklin Roosevelt knew about Japan s intention to attack the ships in Pearl Harbor It is said he did nothing as he was aware that such a blow would allow him to take America into the Second World War Japan remains sensitive about being accused of wartime atrocities 暴行 And Disney is sensitive about its business in Japan where it has a theme park Not all the reviews of the movie have been full of praise A reviewer for Newsweek who was given an early preview acknowledged that the 40 minute sequence 连续镜头 showing the attack itself was powerful The attack comes quite late in the movie however and the reviewer was less impressed with the characters and the love story Almost every line of the dialogue sounds like it comes from an old movie the reviewer wrote 66 From the passage we can infer that the Memorial Day refers to A the day the United States was founded B the day people remember their ancestors C a day people remember those who died in wars D a day people celebrate the victories of World War 67 From the passage we know that Ben Affleck A may be a very popular movie star B regarded Josh Hartnett as an enemy C experienced the Pearl Harbor Incident D was in love with the actress Kate Beckinsale 68 Which of the following statements is TRUE about Pearl Harbor A The movie has made the Japanese angry B The movie will cause a lot of arguments C The movie truly describes the Pearl Harbor Incident D The movie shows that President Roosevelt knew about Japan s intention 69 According to the passage what does the reviewer for Newsweek think of the movie A The scenes of the attack leave no impression B The dialogue in the movie is original and creative C The characters and the love story are less attractive D The attack scenes occupy too much time of the movie 70 Which of the following is the best title for the passage A Ben Affleck in Pearl Harbor B The True Fact of Pearl Harbor C Attention Pearl Harbor is arriving D Reviewer Pearl Harbor is a success D The case for college has been accepted without question for more than a generation All high school graduates ought to go to college says conventional wisdom and statistical evidence because college will help them earn more money become better people and learn to be more responsible citizens than those who don t go But college has never been able to work its magic for everyone And now that close to half our high school graduates are attending those who don t fit the pattern are becoming more numerous and more obvious College graduates are selling shoes and driving taxis college students interfere with each other s experiments and write false letters of recommendation in the intense competition for admission to graduate school Others find no stimulation in their studies and drop out often encouraged by college administrators Some observers say the fault is with the young people themselves they are spoiled and they are expecting too much But that s condemnation of the students as a whole and doesn t explain all campus unhappiness Others blame the stare of the world and they are partly right We have been told that young people have to go to college because our economy can t absorb an army of untrained eighteen year olds But disappointed graduates are learning that it can no longer absorb an army of trained twenty two year olds either Some adventuresome educators and campus watchers have openly begun to suggest that college may not be the best the proper and the only place for every young person after the completion of high school We may have been looking at all those survey and statistics upside down it seems and through the rosy glow of our own remembered college experiences Perhaps college doesn t make people intelligent ambitious happy liberal and quick learning people are merely the ones who have been attracted to college in the first place And perhaps all those successful college graduates would have been successful whether they had gone to college or not This is heresy 异端 to those of us who have been brought up to believe that if a little schooling is good more has to be better But contrary evidence is beginning to mount up 71 According to the passage the author believes that A people used to question the value of college education B people used to have full confidence in higher education C all high school graduates went to college D very few high school graduates chose to go to college 72 In the 2nd paragraph those who don t fit the pattern refers to A high school graduates who aren t suitable for college education B college graduates who are selling shoes an
