everincreasing.6Technology,broadly definedas theuse of tools, has along history.Ever sinceErg thecaveman firstconked ananimal with a rock, people have been usingtechnology. For thousandsof years, theuse oftoolsallowed peopleto moveever closertogether.Because fieldscould becultivated and the technology to storefood existed, people wouldlive incities rather than insmall nomadictribes.Only verylately haveErgs descendantse toquestion the benefits of technology. The Industrial Revolution introducedand spreadtechnologies thatmechanized manytasks. As a result of the drivetoward moreefficient production and distribution(so theever largercities would be supported),people began to actas cogsin the technological machine.Clothing wasno longerproduced bygroups of women sewingand gossipingtogether, but bydown-trodden automations operatingmachinery ingrim factories. The benefitsof the new technologyof today, puters and the inter, are particularlyambiguous. They have made workever moreefficient andknit the world togetherin aweb ofinformation andphone lines. Some visionariesspeak of a world in whichErg neednot checkin tohis office;he canjust dialin fromhome. He wont need to go to abar topick upwomen because there are all thosechat rooms.Hungry?Erg ordershis groceriesfrom anonline deliveryservice.Bored?Download a new game. And yet. Many people, myself included, arealittle queasyabout thatvision.Erg may be doingwork, but is it realwork? Are hisonline friendsreal friends?Does anythingcount in a spiritualway ifits justdigital?Since theIndustrialRevolution,we havebeen hauntedby theprospect that we areturning intoour machines:efficient, productive, souless. The newesttechnologies,we fear, are makingus flatas ourscreens, turning usinto streamsof bitsof interchangabledata. We mayknow a lot ofpeople, but we have fewreal friends. We havea lotof thingsto do,but noreason to do them.In short, the newtechnology emphasizesa spiritualcrisis that has beenbuilding forquite sometime. As Itry tounravel whichI believeabout therelative meritsof technology,I thinkit isinstructive toremember technologys originalresult.A betterplow meanteasier farming, more food, longer lives, and morefree time to pursueother thingssuch as art.Our newesttechnology does not giveus morefree time;it consumesour freetime. We areterminally distractedfrom confrontingourselves oreach other. We staysafe, and lonely,in ourhomes andoffices ratherthan takingthe riskof meetingreal peopleor tryingnew things. While Iam certainlynot aLuddite,I dobelieve weneed tolook for a bitmore balance between technology and life.We have to tearourselves awayfrom thefatal distractionsand goout into the world.Technology hasgiven uslong livesand endlesssupplies ofinformation. Now weneedto apply thatinformation, usethetime were notspending conkingour dinnerwithaclub, and findour reasonsfor living.评价This outstandingresponse displayscogent reasoning, insightful, persuasive analysis, and superiorcontrol of language. The essayimmediately identifiesthe plexitiesof the issue and then playfullyexplores boththebenefitsand thedrawbacks oftechnological developmentsover thecourse of human history. The writermaintains thatabalancebetweentechnologyandlifeis necessaryif humansare goingto abatethe lonelinessthat is part of modern existence.5I disagree with the argument thatBoth thedevelopment oftechnological toolsand theuses towhich humanityhas putthem havecreated moderncivilizations in which loneliness is everincreasing.Arguments can be madefor this thesis, but theydepend largelyupon whatI believeto bea poordefinition ofloneliness. If onedefines lonelinessas the absence of as muchphysical,face-to-face contact with otherpeople, then this argument isprobably true. The inventionof moderntelemunications devicessuch astelephones, fax machines, and putershas definitelycut downon theamount ofphysical contact with otherpeople. This isespecially truein recenttimes due to theextremely rapidexpansion of the Inter.E-mail andtele-conferencing aredirect substitutesfor physical contact, especially in the businessworld. However,I believethat lonelinesscan bebetter measuredby intellectual contact withother individuals.Unarguably, modern technologymakes thisfaster andeasier, with bettermunication witha largernumber ofpeople. Some employershave arguedthat productivityis lessenedsince theyhave hadputers linkedto the Inter,as theemployees spendmuch of their timechattingwith friends, acquaintances,or businesscontacts acrossthe country. This isprobably nota goodthing for the employers, but itdemonstrates theincreased degreeof municationdue tomodern technology.Of course, some technologieshave increased loneliness by any standards, such as the automobileor othertransportation mechanisms. These encouragesubstantially longermutes betweenhome andwork.Automobiles havemade possiblethe patternof suburbanizationthathasbeen inplace in the United States sinceimmediately afterWorld WarTwo.Time spentmuting isgenerally unproductiveand spentalone, unless the individual inquestion iscar-pooling orusing mass transit. The contributionof themuting cultureto lonelinessmay actuallybe changingnow dueto newtechnology that is beinginvented andused by the generalpublic.Popular newdevices, such as the cellularphone, the laptop puter, and thebination thereofmay actuallyconvert mutingtime to a periodof increasedmunications betweenpeople, topass thetime. This will be especiallytrue asuseofmasstransitgrows, which willprobably happen, duetoproblems withgas shortages, air pollution, and thecreation offurther masstransit byfederal andlocal governments. The motivationfor thedeclaration thatlonelinessisincreasing may be dueto the fact thatmany people, especially blue-collar workers, are unableto affordor usethese newdevices. However, since theadvent of the personalputer, the priceper putingpower hascontinually loweredrapidly, and thistrend showsno signof changing.Several panies, such asSun Microsystemsand Oraclehave announcedthat they are attemptingto developterminals withlittle putingpower, but afull capability to aessthe Inter. These deviceswill be in approximatelythe$500price range, which ismuch morereasonable thanthe priceof thecurrent topof theline PC.In addition,to caterto a larger massof thepublic, software panieshavebeencarefully makingtheir productseasier to use bynon-puter nerds. This trendis notlikely tocease. In conclusion, although earlydevelopment ofmodern transportationmay haveincreasedloneliness,I believethat morerecent technologiesare actuallydoing theopposite, stimulating interpersonalcontact andencouraging intellectualexpansion. The perceptionthat theopposite istrue derivesfrom whatI believeis poordefinition of loneliness and the difficultythat theworking classhas in acquiring andusing moderntelemunications devices.评价This strongresponse analyzesthe plexitiesof the issue. In disagreeingwith theprompt, the writermakes adistinction betweentwo typesofloneliness-loneliness causedbytheabsenceof?physicalcontactand lonelinessbrought aboutby a lack ofintellectual contactwith others. The essayreasons thatwhilethe automobileand othertransportation mechanismsoriginally keptpassengers physicallyand intellectuallyisolated fromone another, modern technology, such asthe cellulartelephone andlaptopputer, has made intellectualcontactfaster andeasierand hasbenefited usersby allowingthem tomunicate witha largernumber ofpeople. The responseprovides clearand relevant examples of the waysinwhichtechnological developmentsfacilitate andencourage intellectualmunication. The writerexamines theimpact of user-friendly Interaess on the individuals abilityto interactwith otherseven whenphysical distanceseparates themunicating parties. The organizationis clear, yet transitionsbetween paragraphsare not always smooth. The bodyof the essay lacks the focusthat wouldhelp moveit toa score of6.It is not alwaysclear how the informationgiven relatesto the essays initialposition(e.g.,the discussionof currentprices forpersonal putersin paragraphfive). The conclusion, while clearlyrelevant, attempts toimpose orderon thesomewhat loosely connected paragraphs, yet failsto addsubstance to the analysis. On thewhole, the essaydisplays clarityand control, but the language issometimes impreciseand lesstightly controlledthan it would beina6essay.The followingsentence isone suchexample:The motivationfor thedeclaration thatlonelinessisincreasing maybe dueto thefact thatmany people, especially blue-collar workers, are unableto affordor usethese newdevices.4Looking at the abovestatement,I seea lotof truthto the statement. There aremany waysthat societyhas usedthe advancedtechnology inorder toisolate themselves. It mayor maynot bea consiousmove, but theresults areall the same. The isolationours ina varietyof waysand inall differentareas.By puterizingfactories, there aremore andmore peopleworking longhours bythemselves, with thereonly panionas aputer monitor.Although thepany maybe gettingbetter production, the questionthat needsto beask is at whatcost to their employees. It is not onlythe managementof bigfactories that are responsible for this isolation. This lonlinesscanbeseen inmany othersettings. With thegrowing popularityof the television, the nationis seeinga declinein familiestalking and an increasein watchingthetelevision. Not onlycan thisresult ina generation ofcoach potatoes,it isalso causesless municationandafeeling ofisolation fromeveryone thata personcares about. So fartechnology hasentered thework placeand thehome,it has also enteredthe socialrelm. When yougoto order foodin thedrive-thru,who isor betteryet whatisitthat youtalk to?It isa machine, although thereisaperson on the otherend, you arestill recitingyour order toamachine. If it is tenoclock atnight andyou needmoney, there areATMs.All of these gadgetsmaybevery niceand convient, but theyresult inlack of human contact.Although itmight beeasy toblame technolgyfor ourfeelings ofloneliness,it isjust acop out.By lookingat allthe waystechnology causesisolation,it isstill peoplewho choose to usethese convenientmethods. If aperson wantsto havehuman contact, all theyhave todo isgo insideto thebank orgo insidethe resturauntto order. What itbasically boilsdown to,is that it isour choicewhether ornot weuse technology. It isa scarythought to think maybeone daywe mightlive ina societywhere youwill never havetoleave yourhouse. That byusing FAXmachines, puters, modems, andthetelephone aperson wouldneverhaveto havehuman contactto gettheir jobdone. The thingis that if thatis notwhat weas a society wants,we arethe onesto speakout andchange theoute.评价This responsepresents apetent discussionof the issue. The positionpresented in the firstparagraph-thatthere aremany waysthat societyhas usedthe advancedtechnology inordertoisolate themselves-is adequatelysustained, but theexamples givenare notalways clearlyrelevant(e.g.,in thecase ofparagraph onesputerizingof factories, the decision to usethe technologyis notmade bytheindividualworker.)Also, the reasoningis notdeveloped asfully asitwould beina responseat thescore levelof6or5.While organizationis adequate, the responselackstheorganized coherenceof ideasthat exemplifya5essay.Transitions,within andbetween paragraphs, are notalways smoothor logical. The lastparagraph could be muchmore clearlyfocused,i.e.,several sentencesrepeat thesame idea-thatit isour choicewhether ornot weuse technology-andthepurpose ormeaning ofothers(e.g.,the last)is notimmediately clear. In general, ideas arepresented clearly, although awkwardphrasing sometimescontributes tovagueness(e.g.,By lookingat allthe waystechnology causesisolation,it isstill peoplewho choosetousethese convenientmethods).Lack of sentence structurevariety seems to inhibitthe municationof ideas(e.g.,many shortsentences areoften usedwhere oneor twopound onescould makethe pointsmore effectively).Overall, this isan adequateresponse to the topic.3The technologicaltools weas a society havedeveloped are not inthemselves positiveor negative, they arejust that, tools. The uses, however, are definitelya differentstory.Computers,I believeat oime, were developedto saveus time.Do ourwork morequickly forus so thatwecould havemore leisure timetospend doingthose thingswe enjoy. We havefound now, especially thoseofusthatareparents, that allof theleisuretimewehavegained iseither spentwatching ourchildren learnthings on the puteror creatingour ownunique somethingon thefamily puter. For ohing,it hasbee a very funitem, the putershave bee more thanjust workrelated technologicaltools. The amountofhumaninteraction is limited, because peoplein generalare spendingmuch of their leisuretime doingsolo on the puter. In thepast,it wasmon for thenew young exectutiveto geta membershipto theexercise clubas aperk, where hecould socializewith theupper crust. Now thenewyoungexec.gets acar phoneoraportable fax, sothathe canwork fromwhereever heis, usually doingthat solotrip tosomewhere.Given theseas examples,I wouldtend toagreewith thestatementthat lonlinesshas increasedas adirect result.评价This responseislimitedin bothits analysisof theissue andits controlof language. The writerclearly expressesthe ideathatthetechnologicaltools weas a society havedeveloped arenot inthemselves positiveor negative. However, the essayprovides onlylimited supportfor theposition;the two examples arelooselyconnectedand undeveloped. At timesthe organizationof the essay makesfor confusingreading. For example, the relevanceof theyoung executiveexample isnot clearbecause thereisnotransition from the precedingexample of the puter. The conclusion, one sentencelong, simply restatesthe claimmadeinthe topic. The awkwardsentences areevidence of a limitedfluency.Greater useof poundsentences couldhelp eliminatestructural problemsand facilitatethe municationof ideas(e.g.,sentences3and4couldbebined).For allof thesereasons, the essayreceived a score of3. 2、Computers ofall shapesand sizes,p.c.s,laptops,faxes,phones,the listnever ends. All consideredby our society asgreat technologicaladvances. Not manywould arguethat thedevelopment of these toolshas notadvanced ourworldinsome ways. However theycertainly seemto bemaking ourworld oneinwhichcontactwithour fellowman isless andless necessary.Though somemaybe more fortablenot havingto engagein directcontact,it isquestionable whetherthisisbeneficial tosociety asa whole. The veryleast resultcould in fact beaverylonely world, but itmay resultin moresignificant problems.评价This responseis seriouslyflawed. The analysisof theissue isextremely limited, and there are seriousproblems insentence structure. The writers position, never clearlystated, seemsto be thatasaresult oftechnological developments, contactwithour fellowman isless andless necessary. However, the implicationsof thisstatement(and others)are neverexplored ordeveloped.Furthermore, the listoftechnologicaladvancements doesnot supportor clarifythe writers alreadytenuously heldposition. Each newsentence couldserve asa springboardtoathoughtful analysisbut insteadtakes theresponse furtherfrom theapparent premise. While theessay exhibitsalack ofsentencevariety andcontains somegrammatical errors, thelanguageis forthe mostpart controlled. This responsedid notreceive ascoreof2because ofa languageproblem, but becausereasoning, analysis, and developmentare extremelythin andinsubstantial. 1、 1、depend ontechnologytolive oureveryday lives.Society asa wholewill outdo dailytasks anddepend moreon machinesand putersto aomplishthose tasksfor them. For example;I was told that the youngergenerations usecaclators inclasses ona everdaylevel. We counldnt dothat. We had to resolvea problemon our own.Because caculatorsare beingused, math problemsare beingadjusted aroundthe caculators. If Ididnt knowhow touse acaculator todaythen Imost likelywoulndt knowhow toattempt totackle themath oftoday.Computers oftoday areanother example.Writing aessay tookalotof thoughtand hardwork inpast.Today,I cantype somewords inthe puterand thatputer willspell, make grammercorrection, and dictatea rightform touse inmy essay. In thepast wehadtoall thesethings onourown.Im notputting downmodern technologytotally.I justwant tostate thatif wetake awaypeoples abilitytothinkthen wewill slowlyloose ourabilityto function without moderntechnology.评价This responseis fundamentallydeficient becauseit doesnot discuss theissue.Instead,it brieflydiscusses thedrawbacks ofspecific typesoftechnology(e.g.,calculators andputers)in termsof theeffect theyhave onan individuals abilitytofunctionwithout them.Furthermore, theessaylacks controlof thebasic elementsof academicwriting.Awkward andimprecise phrasingoften interfereswith meaning(e.g.,Society asa wholewill outdo dailytasks?).Test2The media(books, film, music, television, for example)tend to create ratherthan reflect the values ofa society.6For ourgrandparents itourred throughfilms and books. For thebaby boomersit wasaresultof televisionand revolutionarymusic. No matterhowtheimpact tookplace,it is clear thatsince itsvery advent, the mediahave playeda crucialrole innot simplybeing representativeof the values of our societybut creatingthem as well. This statementis stating. The moreadvance inteology
