To introduce students to the unit goal: Talk about how things affect you.To set the scene,increase students vocabulary and introduce the target language.First, show students some pictures of kinds of movies.Let students talk about how the movies affect them.Next, The picture shows two girls walking on the street and thinking about their respective experiences in two different restaurant. The girl on the left is thinking herself in Rockin s Restaurant. This appears to be a modern restaurant as it has a bright room. There is also loud music booming from two big speakers on the wall. The girl is covering her ears with her hands, probably because she finds the music too loud. The girl on the right is thinking herself in a very different restaurant called Blue Ocean. The walls are painted pale blue. There is a pianist at the grand piano. He is probably playing some smoothing music to give the restaurant a calm and peaceful atmosphere.Encourage students to talk about the picture.1.What are the two girl probably thinking about?2.Describe what you see in the thought bubbles.3.How do you think the girls feel about the two restaurants?1b. To help students recognize the target language in natural speech. Culture focus: In China, our restaurant preferences may be influenced by our culture background. For example, restaurants for Western fine dining have a quiet and peaceful atmosphere where people speak softly. On the other hand, people may speak more freely and loudly in traditional Chinese restaurants as traditional Chinese meals tend to be communal in nature and are meant as times for friends and family to chat and catch up with one another on the latest developments in one anothers lives. Listening: Listen to a conversation between the two girls in the picture in 1a. Play the recording twice or more for students to fill in the gaps.Then check the answers. 1c.Role play a conversation between Amy and Tina.Homework:1.Talk about how the things in your room /in the river/on the trees/on your desk/ on the playground affect you.2.Make conversations using the target language . Using “Id rather ”Look at the picture and answer: what can you see in the picture? Theyre thinking about their experiences in different restaurants. Compare answers with a partner.
