Researchers have just offered evidence in a study that says obesity(肥胖) appears to spread through society. But the findings might also offer hope.If friends help make obesity acceptable, then they might also be influential in losing the fat. The researchers note that support groups are already an effective tool in dealing with other socially influenced problems, like alcoholism(酗酒).The findings appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine. The researchers used information collected from 12,000 people. It was collected between 1972 and 2003 as part of the Framingham Heart Study. The information was highly detailed. There was even contact information for close friends of the people in the study. The researchers examined more than 40,000 social ties. They found a persons chances of becoming severely overweight increased by 50% if a friend had become obese.A sister or brother of a person who became obese had a 40% increased chance of becoming obese. The risk for a wife or husband was a little less than that. Nicholas Christakis of Harvard Medical School was a lead researcher in the study. He says there is a direct causal relationship between a person getting fat and being followed in weight gain by a friend. The study found that the sex of the friends was also an influence. In same-sex friendship, a person had a 71% increased risk of becoming obese. Men had a 44% increased risk of becoming obese after weight gain in a brother. In sisters, it was 67%.The researchers also considered the effect of where people lived in relation to each other. James Fowler of the University of California was the other lead expert. He says a friend who lives a few hundred kilometers away has as much influence as one in the same neighborhood. He says the study demonstrates the need to consider that a major part of peoples health is tied to their social connections. Both researchers say their research shows that obesity is not just a private medical issue, but also a public health problem.56What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph Two mean?A. Obesity has negative influence on close friends.B. Friends might also play a part in losing weight.C. One might have positive influence on ones friend.D. Friendship may have little to do with ones health.57Which of the following statements would Nicholas Christakis agree to?A. If one gains weight, ones friends are likely to get fat.B. Social problems like alcoholism are easy to deal with.C. Friends usually dont follow each other to lose weight.D. One might influence others on their social behavior.58James Fowler seems to believe that_ .A. a friend who lives nearby affects us mostB. ones health has nothing to do with friendsC. social connections have effects on ones lifeD. a friend living faraway has the same influence as ones neighbor59The author makes his point clear in the text that_ .A. a major part of peoples health is based on their genesB. friends living closer have greater influence on ones healthC. social relationship is closely connected with peoples healthD. peoples physical condition is subject (受支配的,受制于的) to social connectionsBFun, and maybe moreNickname: tatoosunEmail: When to travel: Jun 2007 - Aug 2007Who am I: Slender African girl in her late 20s. People put in the advertisements above in order to_ .A. introduce their travel experiences B. make friends with strangers while travelingC. look for someone to look after them while traveling D. get proper travel partnersCPersonality types are linked with structural differences in the brain, which could explain why one child grows up to be impulsive (冲动的) and outgoing while another becomes diligent and introspectiveStructural differences between the brains of 85 people have been measured and linked with the four main categories of personality types, which were classified as novelty seeking , characterized by impulsive actions; harm avoidance, marked by pessimism and shyness; reward dependence, with an addictive personality; and persistence, who are people tending to be diligent, hard-working and perfectionistsThe researchers said the brain differences are structural and can be measured in the size of specific regions of the brain that appear to be linked with each of the four personality typesFor instance, people defined as novelty-seeking personalities had a structurally bigger area in the brain while people with harm-avoidance personalities had significantly smaller volumes of tissue in brain regionsThe fact that characteristics are reflected in specific structural differences is useful to know, for instance, when it comes to understanding a childs behavior and choosing the right approach so that somebody who is, for example, particularly timid, might be helped through education and developmentThere is no point shouting at a child who is very shy and telling them off, because it does not come naturally to them to put themselves forwardBut actually knowing there is a biological basis for this helps educators or parents to use the right approach to help a child to compensatePeople who have a reward-dependence personality could, for example, be helped at an early age because they are at risk of turning to drink, drugs or food if they do not get the family support and encouragement they needThis study shows that personality characteristics are something you are born with, but their full expression can be adjusted during development with the right approach, said Professor Venneri, who carried out the study with colleagues from the University of Parma in Italy and Washington University in St LouisIf you know its not something you do but something you are, you can change the environment to reduce the riskKnowing that someone has such a predisposition (体质) could help them adopt preventive strategies and avoid situations where they might seek rewards which could be potentially harmful63Which type of person may turn out to be drug-abusers?ANovelty seeking BReward dependenceCHarm avoidance DPersistence64Which of the following is true about shy people?AThey are often shouted at and scoldedBThey can naturally put themselves forwardCThey structurally have a smaller brain regionDThey are too timid to be educated and helped65Whats the main idea of the passage?APeople have chances to change their personality typesBScientists have identified four different personality typesCStructural differences in the brain have effects on educationDPersonality types are related to structural differences in the brain66The author writes the passage to _Apresent a fact Bargue a claimCsupport a research Dintroduce an approachDDo you know how it is when you see someone yawn and you start yawning too? Or how hard it is to be among people laughing and not laugh yourself? Well, apparently its because we have mirror neurons (神经元)in our brains.Put simply, the existence of mirror neurons suggests that every time we see someone else do something, our brains imitate (模仿)it, whether or not we actually perform the same action. This explains a great deal about how we learn to smile, talk, walk, dance or play sports. But the idea goes further: mirror neurons not only appear to explain physical actions, they also tell us that there is a biological basis for the way we understand other people.Mirror neurons can undoubtedly be found all over our brains, but especially in the areas which relate to our ability to us
