T: Hello, boys and girls. Do you still remember the word “vacation” we learned in unit 6? Whats the difference between “vacation” and “holiday”, do you know? Simply explain the meaning of “vacation”. T: A vacation is also called a “holiday” in British English. It is usually more than a week. When people are on vacation, they are not working or studying. They usually spend their vacation away from home. They might go to the sea or to the mountains. (Asking one of the students) Then where did you go on vacation?S1: I went to visit my relatives and friends. T: How was your vacation?S1: It was great. T: (turning to another student) Where did you go on vacation?S2: I stayed at home and did some reading.T: Did you play computer games?S2: Yes, I did. T: (turning to another) Where did you go on vacation?S3: I went to the museum. T: What did you do there?S3: I learned a lot about history and culture. .Step Matching (1a)1. Encourage the students to talk about the picture. T: Now please look at the picture on page 59. What can you see in Picture a?S1: I can see some mountains and a girl sitting on the grass. T: Whos the girl? Try to have a guess.S1: She is Tina. T: Look at the bubble. So this is Tina and she went to the mountains for vacation. Right?Write “went to the mountains” on the blackboard and ask the students to repeat the phrase.T: What can you see in Picture b?S2: I can see a boy walking in the street in a big city. T: Yes. There are a lot of high buildings. It is a big city. What city is it?S2: Maybe its Paris or London or . Im not quite sure. T: Thats OK. Just a guess. Look at the bubble. So the boy went to a big city. We can say “The boy went to New York City.” Write “went to New York City” on the blackboard and ask the students to repeat the phrase.Go on with the other pictures in the same way. Then ask the students to read the seven phrases repeatedly. 2. Ask the students to match the activities with the pictures ag. T: Now we have seven holiday activities on the left of the picture and seven pictures marked with a, b, c . and g. Please match the activities with the pictures. The first answer is given. Check the answers with the students. Step Listening (1c)1. Ask the students to tell what the person did in each scene. T: (Pointing to the picture.) Look at the picture. Say what the person in each picture did. For example, Tina went to the mountains. Or She went to the mountains. S1: (Picture b) He / Xiang Hua went to New York City. S2: (Picture c) He / Tom went to the summer camp. S3: (Picture d) He / Brad went to visit his uncle. S4: (Picture e) She / Sally stayed at home. S5: (Picture f) He went to the beach. S6: (Picture g) She went to the museum. 2. Ask the students to listen to the recording and number the people in the picture. T: There are three conversations. The people talk about what they did on vacation. Listen to the recording and write numbers of the names in the white boxes in the picture. Play the recording. Then check the answers.T: Who are the speakers in the recording?S: Tina and Xiang Hua. T: Good. Who went to the mountains?S: Tina. T: Who went to New York City?S: Xiang Hua. T: Who went to the summer camp?S1: Sally. T: Do you agree?S: No. .Check if the students get the right information in the above way. If not, play the right sentences or phrases again. Step Pairwork (1c) 1. Ask the students to listen to the recording once again and read after the recording. T: Now listen to the conversations again and read after the recording. Play the recording. T: Now answer my question: Did Tom go to the mountains?S1: No, he didnt. T: Where did Tom go on vacation? S2: He went to the summer camp.T: Where did Sally go on vacation? S3: Nowhere. She stayed at home.Ask the students similar questions to make sure they fully understand the listening materials. 2. Substitution drillsAsk the students to make conversations in pairs. Show the following. Where did Tina / Brad / Sally / Xiang Hua / Tom go on vacation? He / She went to the mountains / visited his uncle / stayed at home / went to New York City / went to the summer camp.T: Now work in pairs and make dialogues after the model above. Write “went to the movies” on the blackboard. T: Then what film did you see? S1: Rush Hour. T: What did you do then?S2: We played badminton in the morning, and then did homework in the afternoon. Write “visited a friend, played badminton, did homework” on the blackboard. Ask as many students the similar questions as possible and write down the key phrases on the board. Then ask the students to read these phrases repeatedly. Step Listening (2a, 2b)1. Ask the students to read the instructions and the names in the box. T: Next well listen to a recording. This is a recording about three peoples vacations. First read the instructions and then listen to the conversations. For the first time, just listen carefully. Play the tape for the first time.2. Ask the students to listen to the recording and match the person with the place.T: Well, can you see the lines before each name? After listening, write the letters of where people went on vacation next to their names. OK? Now listen.Play the recording once again and then check the answers. 3. Ask the students to listen to the recording and check the answers to the questions in the form. T: Look at 2b. Read through the names and activities listed in the form. Listen to the recording again. This time, please listen to the conversations and put a checkmark in the “Yes, I did.” or “No, I didnt.” blank after each activity. Play the recording and then check the answers. T: Look at the sample answer under “Yes, I did.” in the first blank after the words “Nancy . go to Central Park?” Now answer my question: Did Nancy go to Central Park?S1: Yes, she did. T: Did Kevin play volleyball?S2: No, she didnt. T: Did Kevin swim?S3: Yes, she did. T: Did Julie go to the movie?S4: No, she didnt. T: Did Julie study for exams?S5: Yes, she did. 4. Ask the students to listen to and repeat the conversations after the recording. Step Groupwork (2c)Ask the students to work in pairs and role play the conversations using their own names.T: Look at 2c. Work in groups of three. One of you will be Nancy, one will be Kevin, and one will be Julie. Role play the conversations as shown in the book. Before you start, read the example first. Sample conversations:1. S1: Kevin, where did you go on vacation?S2: I went to the beach. S1: Oh, really? Did you play volleyball?S2: No, I didnt. S1: Well, did you swim?S2: Yes, I did. The water was really warm. 2. S1: Julie, where did you go on vacation?S2: I stayed at home. S1: Oh. So, did you go to the movies or anything?S2: No, I didnt. S1: Did you study for exams?S2: Yes, I did. 3. S1: Nancy, where did you go on vacation?S2: I went to New York City. S1: Oh, really? Did you go to Central Park?S2: Yes, I did.Then ask some pairs of students to say the conversations for the class. Step Grammar 1. Show the following. Ask the students to read these words repeatedly. Ask the students to read the sentences in the grammar box.T: In English, most questions end with rising intonation. For example, Is your name Gina? Did you go to Central Park? But questions starting with what, where, why end with falling intonation. Now read aloud the sentences in the grammar box. 3. Grammar Show the following. It was sunny and hot all day. The shops were too crowded. I went to summer camp. He stayed at home. She visited her uncle. We played all morning. He was lost and I helped him find his father. T: The sentences with these verb forms are simple past tense. With most verbs, the simple past is created simply by adding -ed. However, with some verbs, you need to change the ending a little. Here are the rules.Show the following. Ask the students to talk about the pictures in 3b. T: Look at the pictures in 3b. Work in pairs and talk about the pictures. For example, in Picture 1, a girl is on a bus. The girl is taking a bus trip. Look at the words at the bottom of the picture. What does relaxing mean? Does it mean you are excited or quiet? How do you look when you relax? Simply explain the meaning of the words in the picture. relaxing: comfortable, not worrying The trip was relaxing. It was a relaxing bath. boring: not interesting in any way The movie was really boring. He really is a boring person. awful: very bad, or not nice The weather was awful. The soup was really awful. beautiful: very good I went to a beautiful beach on vacation. The weather was beautiful. 3. Ask the students to make conversations.T: Now please work in pairs and make dialogues with your partner. Ask and answer questions about how the people in the picture think of their vacations. Sample dialogues:1) S1: What did you do during the vacation?S2: I went on a bus trip. S1: How was the trip?S2: It was relaxing.2) S1: Where did you go on vacation?S2: I went to the museum. T: Most of us like going on vacation. And during the vacation we often take some photos. Did you take any photos in your vacation? If so, you can make a photo album of vacations by collecting all the photos you took. Now look at the pictures in 4. Work in pairs and talk about the pictures. A sample dialogue:S1: Where did you go on vacation?S2: I went to the beach. S1: What did you do there?S2: I played in the water. S1: How was the beach?S2: It was great. S1: How was the food there?S2: It was awful!2. Ask the students to show their own albums and talk about their vacations with the classmates. T: Did you make a photo album of vacation? Now work in groups, show your albums and talk about your vacation with your group members. A sample dialogue: S1: Where did you go?S2: I went to the Great Wall. S3: How was the weather that day?S2: It was fine. S4: Did you have lunch there?S2: Yes, I did. S1: How was the food? S2: Its awful. 3. DiscussionAsk the students to discuss in pairs where in China they think would be the best place for a vacation. A sample dialogue:S1: Where do you think you would go for a vacation in China?S2: Id like to go to Beijing. S1: Why?S2: Beijing is the capital of our country. There are a lot of interest places there. S1: Where do you prefer to go?S2: Id like to visit the Summer Palace, the World Park, and the Tianan Men Square. Step Homework1.
