Show them must, might, could and cant during the game.Step II PresentationShow the Ss how to use must, might, could and cant to make inferences. Then ask them to practice it by talking about some pictures.Step III Writing(SB Page 34 1a)Ask the Ss to look at the picture, write the things they see in the correct columns in the chart. Then check the answer.Teach some new words. Step IV Listening(SB Page 34 1b)1. Ask the Ss to listen to1b on Page 34. As they listen, draw lines to match each person with a thing and a reason. After listening, some Ss say their answers in sentences.2. Ask the Ss to listen to 2a on Page 35. As they listen, write down the things in the backpack. Then check the answer.3. Ask the Ss to listen to 2b on Page 35. As they listen, fill in the blanks. Then check the answer.Step V ExerciseAsk the Ss to follow me to complete a dialogue about making inferences. After that make a summary about how to complete a dialogue well. At last let the Ss complete a dialogue from 2012 High School Entrance Examination by themselves according to what I teach them. Check the answers.Step VI SummaryMake a summary of Unit 5, Section A (1a2c). Step VII Homework1. Finish SB Page 35,2c;2. Make a conversation according to SB Page 34,1c;3. Complete a dialogue.Teaching reflection:es in the box. At the same time, write the four words “must”, “could”, “might” and “cant” on the blackboard, leaving space next to each word.T: Boys and girls, try to think, what does it mean when you say something must be true? Youre very sure about it. When we say “It might be true.” we are least certain about it. The following percentage may help us understand them better. Show the following. must100%might20-80%could20-80% cant0 T: We know that the four words may all be used in other ways. “must” also mean that it is necessary for someone to do something. For example, “You must get to school early.” The meaning is different from that in “It must belong to Carla.”Ask the Ss to talk about the other three words in this way, trying to give sentences that show different meanings. S1: In the sentence “It can be Johns”, “can” shows the meaning of making inferences. The volleyball cant be Marys. She doesnt like playing volleyball at all. Step IV Reading and Speaking (3a, 4: P36)T: Maybe we all have had the experience of losing things. Whenever we lose something, especially something useful, we would feel worried, say, “very anxious”. Just like Linda in our textbooks. Now read the message in 3a on page 36 and find out what Linda is anxious about?Ask the Ss to put the message in the right order. T: In order to read through the message, we should put these parts in the correct order. The first one is given. Ask the Ss to make inferences: What should be the next?S1: I think it could be followed by the second sentence. Linda cant find her backpack, she is anxious. It cant be at her home. It must be somewhere else. It might be in the symphony hall. So I choose the second one. T: Reasonable. S2: So Linda calls Anna to help her find it. But Anna isnt at home. T: Thats why Linda writes to her. So next?S3: Next Linda has to ask Anna for help. Because she really needs it.For the right order, students may have different opinions. Encourage them to show their own opinions. So long as their inferences are reasonable, thats OK. Discuss with the Ss what a thank-you letter is about and how to write.T: What we read just now is a thank-you letter. What a thank-you letter should be about? Can you make inferences?S1: A thank-you letter must be a personal letter. In the letter the writer may express his / her gratitude for what the receiver has done for him / her. Ask the Ss to outline the format of a thank-you e-mail letter. Sample format for reference:Subject: Thanks! From: Sender Dear _, (Greeting) _ _ Thanks, _ (Senders name)Ask the Ss to look at the picture in 4 on page 36. T: Now, look at the picture in 4 and find out what things are in the backpack. Ss: We can find a dictionary, two keys, a T-shirt, a flower, an exercise-book and some earrings in it.Then ask the Ss to make inferences. T: Make guesses about the owner of the backpack. Write your ideas in the chart. You can work in pairs and talk about your ideas. Sample conversations:1. S1: Here is a Chinese-English dictionary. It could belong to Mary. I know she has one.S2: I dont think so, it cant be Marys. This one is new, but hers is old.2. S1: Here is a flower. The owner must be a girl.S2: Well, it could be a boy. The flower might be a present for his teacher.Step V HomeworkAsk the Ss to read the thank-you letter in the textbook again and write one after class. Period 3 Integrating skillsLanguage goals 语言目标1. It is something that will give me pleasure for a long time.Please accept my sincere thanks and best wishes.Cordially, Susan T: In our daily life, we often meet something we are not sure of, so we should learn to make inferences. Weve learned a lot about making inferences. Now, can you show me more examples?S1: Here is a book. It must belong to Zhang Hai, because there is his name on the book cover.S2: Here comes the bus. It might be No. 6 bus, but Im not sure, because Im shortsighted.S3: It is 5:30, there goes the doorbell. It cant be the postman, because he always reaches at 6:30.T: Maybe most of you have read about Harry Porter. Many strange things happen there. Today well read a strange story about aliens. Step II Listening (1, 2a, 2b: P37) Ask the Ss to talk about the pictures. T: There are three pictures in 1 on page 37. Write a sentence about each picture using the words above them. Pay attention to the word “alien”, it means a strange creature. Here it means “ 外星人”. Now say something about each picture. S1: We can see in the first picture something like a great plate coming. In Picture 2, a man is running, and a strange creature is running after him. In the third picture, the man is running away.Ask the Ss to listen to the story and number the pictures. Before listening, students are allowed to make inferences. Then check if their guesses are right while listening. T: What is the creature? Why is the man running? S1: I think a robber might be chasing him.S2: I think he could do something wrong and he is very nervous, so he is running.S3: I think he must meet something strange and he is very frightened, so he is running.T: Now listen to the tape and number the pictures. Play the recording for the first time. Then ask the Ss to write two or three sentences to finish the story. T: Now, you will hear the recording again. This time, write two or three sentences to finish the story.Play the recording again, and then check the answers.T: Weve known what the story is about. Next listen for one more time and then try to complete the sentences in the chart from 2b.Check the answers. Step III Pairwork (2c: P37)Ask the Ss to work in pairs and make dialogues modeled after 2c. Sample dialogue 1:S1: Why do you think the strange creature is running after the man?S2: It could be playing with the man for fun.S1: No, cant you see it is very fierce? It must be hungry. Sample dialogue 2:S1: Why do you think the girl is crying?S2: She could be crying for the failing of the exam.S1: No, her cat has died, she might be crying for her dead cat.Sample dialogue 3:S1: Why do you think the boy is laughing?S2: He could be laughing for the exciting result of the match.S1: No, cant you see hes reading a storybook? He must be laughing for a funny story.Step IV Reading (3a: P38)Ask the Ss to look at the picture on page 38 first. T: Look at the picture in 3a on page 38. What can you see in the picture?S1: In the picture, there is a woman looking out of the window.T: What can we know about the woman?S2: I think she is a little frightened and confused. Ask the Ss to read the passage in 3a and then list the guesses of different people in the story.T: Now Id like to ask you some questions. First, where is the article from?S1: Its a newspaper article. T: What is the passage about?S2: The passage is about strange events in Bell Tower neighborhood.T: What is the strange thing? What do the people think of it?S3: A local school teacher called Zhou Yu hears strange noises outside his window every night. His wife thinks that it could be an animal. His friends and he think it must be teenagers having fun. The police think it might be the wind. His neighbor thinks it might be a dog. Step V Writing (3b, 3c: P38)Ask the Ss to read the instruction in 3b, and then practice writing another short paragraph about Bell Tower using the notes in it.A sample version:Late that night the Chus found some strange footsteps in the hallway, they thought they might be their neighbors. Lao Zheng, one of the Chus friends thought it might be someone trying to get in the window. Then one morning, Xiao Ning, a student who lives next door, found some garbage in front of her house, she thought it must be of some wild dogs. But the old hunter thought it could be garbage of cats. There must be some animals visiting the hallway. But what could it be?Ask the Ss to finish the story in 3c. T: In 3c, we will find the mystery that causes the strange noises. Look at the headline and finish the article about the strange events in Bell Tower.A sample version: No more mystery in Bell Tower neighborhoodWe now know what was happening in Bell Tower neighborhood. The director of the local zoo says that three monkeys escaped from the zoo. The monkeys made the strange noises, they left footsteps in the hallway of Chu family, they tried to get in the window of Lao Zhengs house, and they left garbage in front of Xiao Nings house. Only one persons guess is right, it comes from Zhou Gus wife. Now the three monkeys have returned to the zoo, the Bell Tower neighborhood become quiet again and people there are very happy.Step VI Speaking (4: P38)Talk about dreams with the Ss. T: Many people believe that dreams have meanings and can even predict the future. But most dreams are often just the ways of trying to forget or making sense of the days problems. We have dreams every day. When we wake up, some of the dreams are still in our mind. Please give an example of your own experiences.S1: Last night I had a dream. In my dream, I was chased by a group of people, I was very frightened.T: Maybe it means you feel nervous under the pressure of study, and you are afraid of falling behind others.S2: The night before last I had a dream. In my dream, I saw my grandma. In fact, she has been dead for five years.T: Maybe it means youre looking forward to seeing her and you must miss her very much.S3: Last night, I had a dream. In my dream, I had an English exam. When the exam was over, I couldnt finish the paper. I was very worried.T: Maybe it means that you are always worrying about the exam.Step VII Homework1. In Exercise 1, there are five words given. Id like five of you to make sentences with these five words. And you must use can, may, must, might or could in the sentences. S1: Christmas is coming. The children must be anxious to get their presents. S2: Xiao Wu thought the strange noises might be from a distant place. S3: You may feel worried about the coming examination, but the first important thing is to keep healthy.S4: Jim is late again. He might be too careful about his new bicycle. S5: Which could be Lucys favorite? Hide it and make a joke on her. Sample answers for reference: There is something really strange in our classroom. For example, every time when I ask about the homework, some of you must be anxious to put up your hands, while others may feel worried about being asked. English may not be your favorite, but I think, if you could be more careful, your English would be much better. Ask the Ss about the preparation for Exercise 2. T: There is, in fact, something to learn wherever you go, that is to say, you could learn everywhere if you have interest. For example, we can learn much from English proverbs, poems, essays, short stories, jokes, etc. Step II Reading (2: P39)Talk about “proverb” with the Ss. T: Today, we are going to learn some proverbs. Last class, you were required to find out the meaning of “proverb”. Did you find out what a “proverb” means?S1: Yes. A proverb is a short popular saying, usually of unknown and ancient origin, that expresses effectively some common truth or useful thought.S2: A proverb is a wise saying.T: Good. A proverb is usually short but meaningful, and can easily be remembered. What do you think the proverbs in the textbook mean?Ask the Ss to tell the meanings of the proverbs in their own words. T: There are many proverbs around the world. You may soon become interested in them when you understand them well. Lets read the proverbs in our textbook and guess what each of them might mean? Discuss in groups, and write down your results. Sample answers:1. We must unite to do things. 2. Different people have different views on things. 3. We should be honest even if we are poor. 4. People or animals who are silent might be thinking about hurting others. 5. If others dont need help, its useless to offer them some.6. The best way of learning is to practice.7. Dont let past things worry you anymore. 8. If you want to do something great, do not be shy to ask for help. Step Practice (workbook)Ask the Ss to do more practice in the workbook. First begin with Exercise 6.T: Lets read the two letters in Exercise 6 on page 17 in the workbook. Can anybody read the letters to the class?Ask some students to read the letters and talk about the main ideas of them.T: Whod like to tell us what the two letters are mainly about?S: The first letter is about Alices worries. Alice thought the man she saw might be a thief. In the second letter a mystery man told Alice that there was nothing serious, she neednt be so nervous, the man couldnt be a thief, he must be the owner of the dog, and he just took the dog to see the animal doctor.Ask the Ss to do the True or False question. Check the answers. And then ask
