Knowledge objectives:(1) Key vocabulary: shake, shake hands, smile, what, head, each, each other, touch, nose(2) Key structures: How do I do that? No, I didnt know that. What do people do when they.? 2. Ability objectives:(1) To understand what is talked about in the conversation.(2) To talk briefly about the body language people use when they meet in some countries. 3. Moral objectives: To know and respect foreigners body language and customs. Teaching key points: 1. To master the key vocabulary and structures learned in this unit. 2. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. 3. To learn what to do and say when you meet others. Teaching methods: Interactive approach Teaching aids: Tape recorder, pictures, handouts Teaching procedures: Step 1 Greetings Step 2 Lead-in1. Preparation (1) Write “body language” on the board and tell the class everyone in the world communicates using body language.(2) Ask students to show you what they do when they do following things: welcome someone ,say yes, say no, see good friends again after a long time etc.(3) Elicit and write the words and expressions on the board. Have students read them.2. Match the pictures with the words and expression from the box.(Activity 1)(1) Ask students to describe the pictures.(2) Elicit answers from several students.Write the new words on the board and teach them if there are some.(3) Tell students to match the pictures with the words and expression, and then check with a partner.(4) Elicit answers from the whole class.3. Listen and match the pictures with the nationality. (1) List the countries on the board and ask a student to put the notes of nationalities next to them. Read through them with the class. (2) Ask students to guess their nationalities.(3) Elicit students predictions. Write them on the pictures.(4) Tell students to listen and decide which picture is being described.(5) Play the recording again for students to check. Then they can check with a partner.(6) Elicit answers from the class and ask students to say why. (7) Go through the example sentences with the whole class. (8) Tell students to work in pairs. One asks and the other answers. They can change roles. (9) Call back the answers by asking several pairs of students to demonstrate. Step 3 Listening (Activity 3)1. Listen and answer the questions.(1) Students listen to the recording while their books close, and answer the following questions on the board.Whats Lingling going to do?Do the Russian and American people greet each other in the same way? (2) Play the recording again for them to check.(3) Call back the answers from the class.2. Complete the table with the correct form of the words from the box.(1) Draw some stick figures of kissing on checks, touching noses, putting hands together and nodding on the board. Ask students if they know in which countries people do them.(2) Ask students to read the conversation and find the answers.3. Complete the table with the correct form of the words from the box.(1) Ask students to read the table and complete the missing information individually.(2) Have students check the answers in pairs.(3) Elicit full sentences from the class.Step 4 Learning to learn(1) Read the information in the box aloud to the class and check they have understood all the vocabulary.(2) Ask why its important to understand and respect body language. Elicit that it can be rude and insulting to someone if you make a gesture or do something that is not acceptable in their culture.(3) Answer any questions students may have. Step 5 Pronunciation and speaking1. Listen and repeat. (Activity 4)(1) Tell students this activity is to practise pronunciation.(2) Play the recording without stopping and tell them to listen to the words and pay special attention to the letters li the different colour.(3) Play the recording again and stop at the end of each line. Ask the class to repeat.(4) Play again and pause for students to repeat the words chorally and individually.2. Talk about what do you do and say when you meet different people. (Activity 5)(1) Ask students if they would always do the same when meeting different people . look at the list with the class together and elicit some ideas.(2) Put students into groups of 3-4. Have them tell each other what to do when they meet each other.(3) Students work in groups to talk about what they do when they meet the people in the list, how it is the same and how different. They may refer to the example sentences.(4) Ask students to do a role-play in pairs. One plays a student while the other plays one of the people on the list. Have them greet each other by saying who they are meeting. Step 6 Homework(1) To recite the conversation in this unit.(2) To find out more customs about greeting when people meet in different countries. Blackboard design
