It seems that I have been more dramatically affected by certain kinds of travel experiences than I ever have. My trip to Iceland is a fine example of that. The plan was to spend two days in a remote mountain hut in Iceland. I was working on a photographic book about winter in Iceland and needed to capture images of this amazing region of high mountain peaks, smoky volcanoes, and lakes with floating icebergs. The moment after we arrived, the weather turned extreme making visibility impossible. It snowed so much and the wind blew so hard that we couldnt leave the tiny hut. To stay warm, we walked around in circles much of the day inside the tiny hut. We tried to call for help but the radio did not work. Day after day, we watched our supplies of food and fuel grow dangerously short. We got acute cabin fever (幽居病) and started going for walks and ski expeditions outside. Even when the weather finally broke, nobody came to get us even though it was three days beyond our scheduled pickup. By the time the rescue team came to pull us out, we had all given up hope. From then on, the world looks different to me, as does my life. It would have taken me years of psychotherapy to get to the same point. Almost everyone has a story to tell, and interestingly, most of these experiences were not altogether pleasant at the time. In fact, it appears that the most constructive life-changing journeys were those that involved some sorts of awful and uncomfortable events that forced the person to develop new resources, increase confidence, and solve problems in new ways.24. The writer went to Iceland to _.A. enjoy the natural beautiful floating icebergsB. collect materials for psychological researchC. take photos about the region for a bookD. challenge the high mountains there25. During the trip in Iceland, those travelers faced difficulties EXCEPT that _.A. they were short of food and fuelB. they got lost in the mountainC. they couldnt see the surroundings clearlyD. they failed to get in touch with the rescue team 26. From Paragraph 3, we learn that the travelers _.A. stayed in the hut for three days altogetherB. were in despair before they were rescuedC. got sick because of going for ski outsideD. got rescued immediately the weather turned fine27. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A. The writer is a travel agent who loves difficult challenges. B. In Iceland the weather is always extreme and it snows a lot.C. The travelers were so depressed that they needed psychotherapy.D. Awful journeys may become life-changing events that inspire people. CChimps(黑猩猩) will cooperate in certain ways, like gathering in war parties to protect their territory. But beyond the minimum requirements as social beings, they have little instinct (本能) to help one another. Chimps in the wild seek food for themselves. Even chimp mothers regularly decline to share food with their children, who are able from a young age to gather their own food. In the laboratory, chimps dont naturally share food either. If a chimp is put in a cage where he can pull in one plate of food for himself or, with no greater effort, a plate that also provides food for a neighbor to the next cage, he will pull at random -he just doesnt care whether his neighbor gets fed or not. Chimps are truly selfish. Human children, on the other hand, are naturally cooperative. From the earliest ages, they desire to help others, to share information and to participate in achieving common goals. The psychologist Michael Tomasello has studied this cooperativeness in a series of experiments with very young children. He finds that if babies aged 18 months see an unrelated adult with hands full trying to open a door, almost all will immediately try to help. There are several reasons to believe that the urges to help, inform and share are not taught, but naturally possessed in young children. One is that these instincts appear at a very young age before most parents have started to train their children to behave socially. Another is that the helping behaviors are not improved if the children are rewarded. A third reason is that social intelligence develops in children before their general cognitive(认知的)skills, at least when compared with chimps. In tests conducted by Tomtasello, the human children did no better than the chimps on the physical world tests but were considerably better at understanding the social world. The core of what childrens minds have and chimps dont is what Tomasello calls shared intentionality. Part of this ability is that they can infer what others know or are thinking. But beyond that, even very young children want to be part of a shared purpose. They actively seek to be part of a “we”, a group that intends to work toward a shared goal.28. What can we learn from the experiment with chimps? A. Chimps seldom care about others interests. B. Chimps tend to provide food for their children. C. Chimps like to take in their neighbors food. D. Chimps naturally share food with each other.29. Michael Tomasellos tests on young children indicate that they_. A. trust adults with their hands full B. know how to offer help to adults C. know the world better than chimps D. have the instinct to help others30. The passage is mainly about_. A. the helping behaviors of young children B. ways to train childrens shared intentionality C. cooperation as a distinctive human nature D. the development of intelligence in children 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。When were little, we know nothing about the rights and responsibilities of adulthood. 31 .Thus, if we like a certain toy or if we want to eat a certain type of chocolate, we think that our parents will have to buy that for us. We dont care that they possibly have not enough money for that. If they dont carry out our wish, well begin to cry. 32 . Whenever we begin to cry, well get what we want.Still, little by little, we realize that our parents cant offer us all that we want for certain reasons. We then also understand that parents have their rights. They have the right to scold us when we do something wrong or when they find out that we have lied to them. 33 . They choose our clothes, the food we eat, the school well study at, the hours when we should go out to play and the time we have to return home. 34 .They are the ones to be blamed later if we dont receive proper education. Thats why when we beat a classmate at the kindergarten, parents are the ones to apologize for our deeds in front of the teacher and the classmates parents. And when we get ill, they are responsible for not taking good care of us and for dressing us inadequately. The moment we become teenagers, we notice that we should be responsible for our behaviors in society. Now we have the right to be independent. 35 . It is supposed that we are mature enough to solve our problems and to make people around trust us. For some of us, this is a difficult test to pass, but it is the best method to see if we are capable of taking our place in society.A. We should believe we can do them by ourselves.B. We think our parents should offer us all we need. C. This is a childs important weapon to threaten his/her parents.D. Moreover, they have the right to make choices for us when were little.E.
