Cats dont want something pushed down their throats, and theyll fight with all their strength to prevent it. In fact, its amazing how powerful their small bodies can be.The easiest way of pilling a cat is to press the pill into powder. Then mix the powder with a small amount of wet food. If your cat usually eats dry food, she will probably view the wet food as a treat and eat it up.If your cat wont eat the wet food that contains the pill or if she is too ill to eat, you can get a “pill gun”. There are some basic instructions. Getting your cats mouth to open is going to be the most difficult part. First, be sure the pill is in a handy place. Then you can put your cat on a bookshelf with her bottom in a corner or you can put her on your lap firmly tied. Have your cat facing to the right if youre right-handed. With your left hand, hold your cat at the cheekbones, putting your palm at the top of her head. Keeping your finger off the trigger (扳机), with your right hand, insert the pill gun until the pill is positioned over the tongue and open throat. Be sure to give your cat a treat directly after giving the pill.If you dont feel comfortable using a pill gun, you can try giving the pill by hand. Push your cats head backwards just far enough so that her nose is pointing towards the ceiling. At this point, most cats will slightly open their mouths. With the little finger or ring finger of the hand holding the pill, open the bottom jaw a little more. You may need to hold her top jaw with your other hand while doing this. Aim straight and lightly throw the pill or drop it. Most cats will then swallow the pill.1. Its citizens are fundamentally prosperous and the way of life in the major cities and towns is much the same however many miles divide them. It takes a sharp ear to identify regional accents. However, there is some difference in lifestyle between city settlers and the country people. Almost 90 percent of the population lives in the fast-paced cities along the coast and has little more than a passing familiarity with the desert. The major cities preserve images of colonial heritage, but the overall impression is modem, with new buildings reflecting the country s youth. In contrast, the rural communities tend to be slow-moving and conservative. For many years, Australia was said to have ridden on the sheep s back , a reference to wool being the country s main money earner. However, it is no longer dominant ( 主宰的) . Much of Australia s relatively sound economy is now achieved from natural coal and wheat, and by being the largest diamond producer in the world. Newer industries such as tourism and wine making are also increasingly important. Australians are generally friendly and relaxed, with a modest sense of humor. Yet, contrary to widespread belief, very few Australians have true prisoner origins. Within only one generation of the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788, Australia had become a nation of immigrants. Originally coming almost entirely from the British Isles, today one in three Australians comes from elsewhere. Australia s liberal postwar immigration policies led to a flowing of survivors from war-torn Europe, most notably Greeks, Italians, Poles and Germans. The emphasis has shifted in recent years and today the majority of new immigrants are from Southeast Asia. Today Australia is a mixture of nations and although some racism exists, it has generally been a successful experiment and the country is reasonably proud to have one of the most harmonious multicultural communities in the world.24. What does the writer mean by saying has little more than a passing familiarity with the desert in the second paragraph? A. The major population has a close relationship with the desert. B. The fast-paced cities are just located by the desert. C. The major population knows little about the desert. D. The major population is familiar with the people living in the desert.25. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage? A. The pace of life in the city is different from that in the country. B. One third of people living in Australia come from Europe. C. The Australian economy is dependent on sheep exports. D. Most Australians have ancestors who were prisoners.26. What used to be Australia s main money earner? A. Wheat. B. Wool. C. Tourism. D. Diamond.27. We can infer from the passage that _. A. nothing about Australia s colonial part in modem cities can be seen by visitors B. tourism and wine making resulted in fast development in rural communities only C. immigrants from Europe have brought racial problemsD. Australia s recent immigration policy encourages immigrants from Southeast Asia参考答案2427、CABD 【江西省上饶市2014高考英语二模试题】D A mansion(豪宅) may symbolize the American dream But the fact is, for most immigrants, the closest one they ever get to is the neighboring bushes Such is the case with 63-year-old Catalino Tabia, Calif Hes a gardener with a 6h grade education He came to America to make his dreams come true, but ended up fulfilling everyone elses“I always wanted to be somebody, Tabia said“But now I just want the opportunity to help others That is why, not long ago, Tabia started the Bay Area Gardeners Foundation Its a charity aiming at helping smart kids like Noel Chavez, whose dream was to become the first in his family to graduate from collegeUnfortunately, since Noel is still waiting for his citizenship, hes not qualified for financial aidAnd after just a few months of going to school full-time and working full-time, he was ready to give in “Im working too much Im not going to do it Its impossible But then you get some help, and thats my break The break was a $ 1,500 scholarship from the Gardeners Foundation In the last two years, the foundation has awarded 13 such prizes to low-income kids, regardless of citizenship And Tabia plans to give out hundreds more How does a gardener come up with that kind of cash? ”I was thinking and thinking and suddenly, the clients V he said“Thats where the money is coming from We work for clients with a lot of money Tabia and his gardener friends just started knocking on those mansion doors-and the checks have been rolling in ever since “There might be some gardeners at your graduation, someone said to Noel“Im sure there will and Im going to invite them, he replied Tabia is now hoping this idea catches on with the gardeners around the country And whether that happens or not, and whether he realizes it or not, Tabia has already finished what he came to America to dobecome somebody71Why did Tabia come to America? But would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends on the school playground or lunch queue? Social networking sites have become extensions (延伸) of the school hallways, so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends? In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day to day lives as they always had because they had no need to know more about technology. However, more and more parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This realization has given many parents the motivation to educate themselves about social networking sites. These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who they have around them; theres also a certain amount of control over privacy that we dont get in real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated (侵犯)when we must accept a “friend” request from a parent or family member. Its a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On the one hand we dont want to “reject” their request because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel you have something to hide. On the other hand if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before.A recent survey suggested that parents shouldnt take it personally if their child ignores their request: “When a teen ignores a parents friend request, it doesnt necessarily mean that they are hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of their life where they want to be independent.”Perhaps talking with parents and giving explanations would help soften the blow if you do choose not to add them to your friends list. 21. The passage is mainly about _. A. privacy onlineB. parents friend requestsC. the generation gap D. social networks22. From Paragraph 2, we learn that _.A. parents have realized the importance of social networksB. parents feel secure about their privacy onlineC. social networks successfully fill the generation gapD. social networks offer a platform for parents to communicate23.
