The Bayeux Tapestry, a 20 inch by 23 foot-long embroidered cloth depicting scenes commemorating the Battle of Hastings in 1066, was probably commissioned ca 1070 to tell the story of William the Conqueror and Harold, Earl of Wessex, the men who led the Norman and Saxon armies in 1066.
