Reading Comprehension 20% Passage 1 Ever since people began constructing buildings, they have tried to build them taller and taller. This century we have seen the development of “skyscrapers”, tall towers which now dominate the skyline of most of the worlds major cities. Every country would love to build the tallest building in the world. For some time, this record was held by the USA, with the 1,450-foot Sears Tower in Chicago. More recently, the record was taken by Malaysia when it built the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur. These immense twin towers are only 23 feet taller than the Sears Tower but that is still enough to make them the tallest in the world. Now, however, there are plans for a new building which will make even the Petronas Towers look like childrens toys. This building will be called Millennium Tower, and its planned location is Tokyo in Japan. When it is completed, Millennium Tower will stand an astonishing one kilometer high. It will have eight million square meters of floor space on 170 stories, and 40,000 windows. Fifty thousand people will be able to work, shop, and live there, so it will be as big as a small town. From the top of the tower a person will be able to see for 100 miles, although that person will have be rather brave the winds blowing at the top of the tower will be traveling at 200 miles per hour, making the whole building sway slightly. So with winds of that speed, and with the ever-present danger of another earthquake in Japan, will the tower be safe? The designers say that it will. The tower will be built in an unusual curved, cone shape which will prevent it from being blown over by the wind. I was pleased to find out that checks and tests are now carried out at all major sporting events to make sure that everyone is playing fairly. However, I disagree with the writer who states that this will ensure that all sports are played fairly in the future. There are other ways of cheating, and while researching my forthcoming book on the history of sports, I discovered that a small number of athletes have found surprising ways to break the rules. One of these is an Algerian runner called Abbes Tehami. In 1991, Tehami ran in the Brussels Marathon and secured an easy victory. However, some spectators were surprised at how much the runners appearance changed during the race. He seemed to grow taller, and although he started the race with a mustache, by the end he had shaved it off. After an investigation, it was discovered that Tehamis coach had run the start of the race for him. He had then swapped clothes with Tehami himself, who was hiding behind a tree 10 miles along the route. A similar trick was attempted at the 1896 Olympics, again in the marathon. A runner named Spridon Belokas was so eager to win the race that he hired a horse and carriage to help him. As soon as he had run out of view the crowds of spectators, he jumped in the carriage and “ran” the rest of the race from a sitting position! He still only came in third, but when race officials realized what he had done, his bronze medal was taken away from him. Another runner used an even more clever method to cheat at the Olympics, and this time it was many years before it was discovered. Stella Walsh was a Polish runner, and in 1932 became the womens 100 meter Olympic champion. Stella remained a heroine for the people of Poland for almost 50 years. However, in 1980 Stella was killed during a bank robbery in the USA, and her secret was discovered. Stella Walsh was really a man! Although taking drugs may now be the most common form of cheating in sports, it has certainly not been the only method.
