1.1.Helen Monson has always been interested in helping her community. Her first volunteer experience was for the American Red Cross when she was in high school. When she was a school teacher, she also found time to volunteer. One year, she o a Super Saturday fun day for kids in the community. She also used to volunteer at the mint festival every year, One summer she served food, another year she hosted an art programme. After she retired, she started volunteering to help the old. When her father was older, he was not able to see as well as he used to, which made her sad because he had always enjoyed reading. She decided it would be fun to read to e people in her community. She also helped one woman write her stories. Ann was almost 100 years old, and Helen wrote down information about her life when she visited her. She put the information in a book and got it published. Ann was very t to share her life story with her children and grandchildren. After a hurricane(飓风) destroyed some southern cities, Helen volunteered again for the American Red Cross. She p food and answered phones in a care centre. She says,” I have always liked the Red Cross because the organization helps people in need no matter what.”One day Helen read an a in the newspaper about refugees(难民) who needed to learn English. Now, she meets once a week with Sahra, a 38-year-old woman from Somalia. Sahra is reading and writing skills. Helen gave Sahra a camera and asked her to take pictures of her daily life. She developed the pictures, and then asked Sahra questions about them. In the end, they wrote a book together and used the photos in the book. This helped Sahra learn many new words about her everyday life.Helen says, “The most r part of volunteer work is becoming friends with the people I help, They e my life as well as I do that for theirs.”2.“I sometimes get up at three or four in the morning and I surf the net.”“I often check my e-mail forty times a day just because I cannot b myself.”“I often spend more than three hours during one time on the net.”“I spend more time in chat rooms than with my real-1ife friends.”Do you know any people like these? They are part of a new addiction(瘾) called Internet addiction. Internet addicts spend at least thirty to forty hours online every week. The use of the Internet can be an addiction like d use. The police found the student in the computer lab: he was surfing the net for several days straight, and didnt c what school classes were going on. Studies show that about 6 to 10% of Internet users become addicted. And people worry about the teens because the Internet is changing the playing field for some of them. I also helped to clean up the tables when it was very busy. One night, just before Christmas, I found a large black w on the floor near one of the tables. I guessed I should check it to find out who was the owner, but I was very busy at the time. And I imagined that if there was something v in it, the owner would be back. Sure enough, an hour later a man came up to the counter and asked if anyone had found his left thing. I asked him to d it, and after he did it exactly, I gave him back. He e his thanks when I handed it to him. He asked me if I had opened it, and when I told him “no”. At once he opened it and showed that it had nearly $800 in cash. He took out a twenty-dollar bill and handed it to me and I was amazed at this. “A reward for your honesty,” he said and then turned and walked away. Thinking about it later, I began wondering whether I would have been honest if I had known what was in it! I thought that if I had no way to find the owner and no one r to get it, I might keep it. But it also came into my mind that I actually saved someones Christmas plans by finding the important thing. The good f it gave me was w more than anything could buy. 2.1.make delicious chosen decide lay We know the mosquito very well. Mosquitoes fly everywhere. Before modern zoos, there were small collections of animals called menageries. In most menageries, animals were kept in small dirty cages. However, in modern zoos, animals are kept in habitats(栖息地) that look like areas. This change did not take place all at once. For many years, the largest and most modern zoos kept animals in cages. Some zoos still keep animals caged. Often, newspapers write articles about this. They speak out zoos for the way the animals are treated.Long ago, the purpose of zoos was to let people see rare animals from distant places that most people could never visit. But now there are many other for keeping animals in zoos. For example, many animal species are in danger. Some animals live only in limited places. Zoologists try to breed some of them and return the species to its native habitat. At one time, hunters caught and sold animals to zoos that needed them. This still occurs today. But now, zoos often sell their animals to other zoos. , many countries now have laws that doesnt allow people to catch or kill wild animals. So, the animals you see in the zoo may never have lived in the wild. They probably were born and raised in zoos.People who animal rights dont like the display of animals in zoos. However, all this changed in the summer of 1995, when the Potter family moved into No. 16 Church Lane. There was Mr and Mrs Potter, their six children, aged between three and twenty-two, three dogs, several cats and two goats. The Potter family were noisy: the children played loud music day and night and the animals were never quiet.Dorothy Price lived next door to the Potters. She was an elderly woman who had lived in Milford all her life. At first, the noise didnt disturb her and she told other neighbours that the Potters seemed to be a pleasant family who were always friendly. But as time went by and the noise got worse, Dorothy started to get very upset. One day, she complained to Mrs Potter that the goats had been making a noise all night and had kept her awake. On another occasion, she told Mr Potter to stop running his car engine on Sunday mornings because she couldnt hear her favourite radio programme. A week later, she asked the Potters to stop their dogs from jumping into her garden and making a mess(乱糟糟) in the flower beds. Nothing changed and things went from bad to worse. Dorothy Price decided it was time for action. One night, she went into the Potters garden and gave sleeping pills(药片) to the dogs and goats. For once, she had a peaceful nights sleep, but the following morning all the animals were still asleep. The Potters called the police. When the police officer arrived, Mr Potter told him that Dorothy Price had tried to poison his animals the night before and that she was always complaining about his family. Just then, Dorothy appeared at her front door. “The Potters have caused nothing but trouble since they moved in,” she said to the police officer. “Im an animal lover myself, but the way the Potters treat their animals is cruel.” She told him that she had given the animals sleeping pills and said that she was sorry, but in the end she had had no choice; it was the only way she could get a good nights sleep. 1.
