Juliuss brother Paul says, The music is cool, its not too expensive and its the place where I can meet all my friends.Julius is lucky because his parents have enough money to send him to school. Many children in Kenya do not go to school because their parents are too poor to pay for schooling. Kenya, like many countries in East Africa, has a lot of problems. There is very little industry and farmers do not receive high prices for their crops. Half the people in the capital Nairobi live in slums (贫民区) where whole families crowd into a single-roomed hut. In the north of the country the situation is worse. The rains have failed for several years and the people have not enough food. It is a young country. Almost half people are aged under 15. Many people there have been hit hard by AIDS. Because the country is poor, it cannot pay for the expensive medicine that can control AIDS. Julius is worried about his future. I dont know what I will do when I leave school. There are very few jobs for young people. He would like to work with computers on the Internet, maybe start up an Internet cafe. However, there are several problems with this. The computers are very expensive. Next the electricity supply does not run all day every day. German engineers Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz built the first successful gasoline engines in 1885. After 1900, however, the United States became a leader in automobile production. The first cars were handmade and very expensive. Only people in rich cities could afford them. The first company to make gasoline cars in the U.S. was the Duryea Motor Wagon Company. Then, in 1901, Ransom E. Olds Began mass-producing his car, the Oldsmobile. In 1913 Henry Ford made great strides in the mass production of cars by using an assembly line in his factory. Mass production meant that each car was less expensive to make. Now car ownership was affordable for the average person. By 1916 there were more than one million cars in the United States. The automobile gave people the freedom to travel anywhere there were passable roads. Families that lived great distance apart could travel by automobile to visit each other. People could visit places they had never seen before. Before the mass production of cars, people lived close to work. Their means of transportation included walking, riding a bicycle, using a horse and carriage, or taking a train. The automobile gave people the ability to live farther away from work. The result was that gradually people moved out of the cities to the less crowded suburbs. The automobile industry created millions of jobs. The jobs were not just in the auto factories, where the cars were assembled. Workers were needed to make auto parts, run gas stations and repair shops, and work at new motels and restaurants that served people who traveled by car. Jobs became available at car rental companies. People were needed to build roads. These jobs and many others still exist because of the automobile. 7. D A small city in southwest Britain is banning(禁用) plastic bags to help the environment and cut wastea step that environmentalists believe is a first for Europe. Shopkeepers in Modbury agreed to stop handing out disposable plastic bags to customers on Saturday. They said paper sacks and cloth carrier bags would be offered instead. Last month, San Francisco became the first U.S. city to ban plastic grocery bags. Internationally, laws to discourage the use of plastic bags have been passed in parts of South Africa and Ireland, where governments either tax (收税) shoppers who use them or fine companies that hand them out. Bangladesh already bans them, and so do at least 30 small Alaskan villages. Modbury, about 225 miles southwest of London, has also declared a bag amnesty(宽限期), allowing local people to hand in plastic bags that are kept at home. They will be sent for traveling. The Modbury ban was the idea of Rebecca Hosking, who saw the effect of bags on sea life while he works in the Pacific as a wildlife camerawoman. She said response(反应) in the town so far had been “really positive”“Modbury is quite an oldfashioned city and a lot of people have wicker baskets to go out shopping anyway,” Hosking told Sky News Television. The Worldwatch Institute, an environmental research agency, states that 100 billion plastic bags are thrown away each year in the United States alone. More than 500 billion are used yearly around the world. 11. What does the underlined word “disposable” in the passage mean? A. acceptable B. throwaway C. long lasting D. valuable 12. Hiroyukis bed will solve your problem! Here is how it works. The bed is connected to an alarm clock. First, the alarm clock rings. You have a few minutes to wake up. Next, a tape recorder in the bed plays soft music. The tape recorder in Hiroyukis bed plays a recording of his girlfriend. She whispers in a sweet voice, “Wake up, darling, please.” A few minutes later, Hiroyuki hears a recording of his boss. His boss shouts, “Wake up at once, or youll be late!” If you dont get up after the second recording, a mechanical “foot” in the bed will kick you in the head. The bed waits a few more minutes. What? Youre still in bed! Slowly the top of the bed rises higher and higher. The foot of the bed goes lower and lower. Finally you slide off the bed and onto the floor. You are out of bed and awake! Hiroyukis bed is not in stores. There is only one bed - the bed Hiroyuki made for a contest. Maybe someday a company will make Hiroyukis bed and sell it in stores. The best students wont only have high marks. They will also be kids who dont dye(染)their hair, smoke or drink. The following are some of the new rules. Tell the truth. Have you ever copied someone elses work on an exam? Dont do it again! Thats not something an honest student should do. If you have played computer games for two hours in your room, dont tell your parents you have done homework. Do more at school. Good students love animals and care for other people. April is Bird-Loving Month in China. Is your school doing anything to celebrate? You should join! That way, you can learn more about animals and how to protect them. When more people work together, it makes it more fun for everyone. Have you ever quarreled with your teammates when your basketball team lost? Only working together can make your team stronger. Be friendly to the people you are with. Try to think of others, not only yourself. Be open to new ideas. Have you ever thought that people could live on the moon? Maybe youll discover Earth II someday. Dont look down on new ideas. Everyones ideas are important. You should welcome them, because new ideas make life better for everyone. Protect yourself. Has someone ever taken money from one of your classmates? Dont let it happen to you. If you have to go home late, you should let your parents know. Use the Internet carefully. The Internet can be very useful for your studies. But some things on the Internet arent for kids, so try to look at Web pages that are good for you. You can use the Web for fun or homework. Cant you find any good Web sites for children? Here are some: . 7. The school new rules will help kids by telling them _. Good Web sites for children can _. A. be a waste of time B. make life easierC. do homework for them D. help them with their studies DHonesty comes in many forms. First theres self-honesty. Is what people see the real article or do you appear through smoke and mirrors? I find that if I try to be something Im not, I feel unsure of myself and take out a part from my PBA (personal bank account). I love how singer Judy Garland put it, “Always be a first-class version (版本) of yourself, instead of a second-class version of somebody else.”Then theres honesty in our actions. Are you honest at school, with your parents, and with your boss? If youve ever been dishonest, I think we all have. Try being honest, and notice how well it makes you feel. Remember, you cant do wrong and feel right. This story by Jeff is a good example of that: In my second year of study, there were three kids in my math class who didnt do well. I was really good at it. I would charge them three dollars for each test that I helped them pass. Id write on a little piece of paper all the right answers, and hand them off.At first I felt like I was making money, kind of a nice job. I wasnt thinking about how it could hurt all of us. After a while I realized I shouldnt do that anymore, because I wasnt really helping them. They werent learning anything, and it would only get harder down the road. Cheating certainly wasnt helping me.It takes courage to be honest when people all around you are getting away with cheating on tests, lying to their parents, and stealing at work. But, remember, every act of honesty is a deposit (储蓄) into your PBA and will build strength.10. The black words “appear through smoke and mirrors” in the first paragraph means “_”. A. to be honest B. to be unreal C. to become clear D. to come from an imagined world 11. Which of the following can best explain Judy Garlands words? A. Be your true self rather than follow others. B. Dont copy others or you cant be the first class. C. Make efforts to be the first instead of the second. D. Dont learn from others unless theyre excellent. 12. What does the author expect to show by Jeffs story? A. Honesty can be of great help. B.A bad thing can be turned into a good one. C. Helping others cheat can do good to nobody. D. One should realize the wrong in his bad deeds. 3. In the last paragraph the author mainly wants to express _. A.one must be brave to be honest B. its difficult to be honest when others are notC.one should be honest when making a depositD. honesty in ones actions can help him in the future答案A ABD B. BCD C. She even stood over poor little Ella and made sure that the pupil wasnt using her left hand. When Ella got in the fourth grade, she had a much younger teacher, Miss Kindred. She gave pupils handwriting exercises. One day, she asked Ella to stay in the classroom after class. Ella thought Miss Kindred was going to punish her because of her bad handwriting. Miss Kindred asked Ella to write a few words with her right hand. Then she made Ella write a few words with her left hand. Ella looked up at her when she finished writing, and the teacher had a warm smile on her face. Miss Kindred gave Ella a writing exercise to take home with a note in an envelope to her father. Ella gave him the note and began doing her homework. Her father watched her while she was writing with her left hand. He praised her
