T: Turn to page 24. Here are two pictures in Section 1. They are both big and famous events in Chinese history, dont you agree? In the first picture, Liu Xiang won the gold medal at the 2004 Olympics. When did this event happen?Ss: 2004 of course.T: Oh, sure. So where were you when you heard the news? And what were you doing at that time? Work in groups, ask and answer about it. You may ask about:1. How did you feel?2. Where were you when you heard the news?3. What were you doing when you heard the news?Deal with the second picture in the same way.T: Look at the second picture. When did it happen?Ss: In 2001.T: How did you feel when you heard the news?S: I felt very excited and happy.T: Where were you when you heard the news?S: I was at home.T: What were you doing at that time?S: I was watching TV with my parents. T: Good. Now work in groups again and talk about this event. After students group work, ask them some questions about the picture of Martin Luther King, and tell them something about him.T: Now, lets move on to another picture below. Who is he? Do you know anything about him?If students dont know anything about him, give them a brief introduction about him.Step II Reading comprehensionLet students go over the reading strategy and put it into practice. T: Id like one of you to read the reading strategy for us. Any volunteer? (after reading) Now, look at the title of the passage, “Do you remember what you were doing?” What can you learn from the title? Or what do you think the passage is about after you read its title?S: I think the passage is about a past event. S: I think it is about something very important. .T: OK, now read the passage quickly and check whether you are right or not. After students finish reading, let them underline the first sentence of each paragraph, which will help them understand the text better. T: The first sentence of each paragraph is very important. It usually gives the main idea of this paragraph. In another word, it is the topic sentence of this paragraph. So it will help you understand the paragraph and the text well. Now please underline the first sentence of each paragraph and read it. After students finish that, take paragraph 1 as an example and tell students how to understand it better with the first sentence. T: In the first paragraph, the first sentence is a general statement or theory. And other sentences all support it with details, dates and facts. So how do they support the first sentence? What is the important event? When did it happen? Ss: The event is that Dr Martin Luther King was killed in the city of Memphis in America. It happened on April 4, 1968. T: Do people remember what they were doing when they heard about the news?Ss: Yes, they do. Let students talk about the rest paragraphs in the same way. Then deal with activity 3a. Let students scan the text and match the events with the correct dates. After they finish, check the answers. U 寂静;沉默 e.g. The silence of dawn 黎明的寂静 keep silence 保持沉默meaning C 意思;含义 e.g. Do you know the meaning of the word?Step III Writing Let students write an event that they remember well by following the text. Give them instructions on how to write it. T: Apart from the events in the pictures of Section 1, can you name some other events that you remember well?Ss: Sars in 2003; Tsunami in 2004; Pakistan earthquake in 2005 .Teacher may also show students pictures of some important events either home or broad. T: Now Id like you to write a passage about it.
