Teaching readingClass Description: Grade 9 students.Lesson duration:15mins.Teaching aims: By the end of the lesson, students should be able to: 1. be interest in fancy tales2.be clear about the whole structure of the text3. learn to read texts with questions4. learn to apply the reading skills (skimming and scanning) to the reading materials after class.5. learn to read more fairy tales on their own.Teaching contents: Lesson 5, The Brave Little TailorTeaching aids: PPT, Chart/Table, Pictures, and TextbookTeaching procedures: Pre-reading: 1. Review: skimming and scanningSkimming:is a technique whose purpose is to gain a quick overviewin order to identify the main points. When skimming, you will often skip words,sentences, and paragraphs.Scanning: involves a process of quickly searching reading materials in order tolocate specific bits of information. When scanning you dont start from the beginning and read to the end.2.Use questions to lead students to the subject. (Do you know any fairy tales? Do you like reading fairy tales?) 3. Show the pictures about the text and ask them questions. (Whats the mans job? How do you know it? What does him doing now? Whats on the table? )4.Guide students to read the title “ The Brave Little Tailor” then ask them “ do you have any question about this title?”5. Guide them to read some important words of the article loudly.While-reading:1. Ask students to read the whole text with the following questions and get the main idea. (2-3mins)2.Offer 3 statements about the main idea and ask to choose the only right statement.A:The tailor killed seven men so the giant think he was brave. B:The tailor was actually very smart and he won the giant with wisdom. C:The tailor won the giant because he was more brave.3. Ask students spend more time for the specific information and several specific questions are showed in the PPT for them to judge.A:The tailor opened one jar and bought it immediately.B:The giant believed that the little tailor were very strong as soon as he read the words on the belt.C:The tailor took the stone out of his pocket and tried hard to press it,but nothing happened.4.Ask students to exchange these ideas with them desk mate and settle these questions.5.
