The Charm of Religion-A Brief Comment on The Da Vinci CodeAbstract: The Da Vinci Code is an exciting American movie about religion, adventure and belief. After a brief introduction about the background and the main story about this movie, this paper focuses on probing the major reasons for the popularity of the movie. The main discussion centers on the detailed analysis of the two climaxes in the movie from the angle of religion. And it draws a conclusion that the great attraction of this movie results from the charm of the religion legends.Key words: The Da Vinci Code, religion, legends, climax, The Da Vinci Code is a mystery-detective fiction novel written by American author Dan Brown. Because the novel has provoked a popular interest in speculation concerning the Holy Grail legend and Magdalenes role in the history of Christianity, before the movie was started filming, it had been extensively denounced by many Christian denominations as a dishonest attach on the Roman Catholic Church. Besides, it had also had been criticized for historical and scientific inaccuracy. But in my opinions, the description of religion legends is the main reason for the world-wide popularity of this movie. The movie is an attractive story about religion. While in Paris on business, Harvard symbolist Robert Langdon receives an urgent late-night phone call: the elderly curator of the Louvre has been murdered inside the museum. Near the body, police have found a baffling cipher. While working to solve the enigmatic riddle, Langdon is stunned to discover it leads to a trail of clues hidden in the works of Da Vinci - clues visible for all to see - yet ingeniously disguised by the painter. Langdon joins forces with a gifted French cryptologist, Sophie Neveu, and learns the late curator was involved in the Priory of Sion - an actual secret society whose members included Sir Isaac Newton, Botticelli, Victor Hugo, and Da Vinci, among others. In a breathless race through Paris, London, and beyond, Langdon and Neveu match wits with a faceless powerbroker that seems to anticipate their every move. Unless Langdon and Neveu can decipher the labyrinthine puzzle in time, the Priorys ancient secret - and an explosive historical truth - will be lost forever. The two climaxes of this movie come from the description of religion legends. The first climax comes from Teabings explanation about “the Holy Grail” to Sophie Neveu. The movie spent a lot of time in explaining it clearly, even use many new measures. From Teabings words, we know that the true nature of Christianity was preserved within the myth of the Holy Grail (which refers both to Mary Magdalene herself and the bloodline established by her progeny with Jesus). The Priory of Sion, a secret society that originated as part of the Knights Templar, has guarded this secret over the centuries. Leonardo da Vinci, one of its Grand Masters, encoded this secret in many of his works of art, most famously in his mural of the Last Supper (hence the novels title). The Vatican, aware of the existence of documents demonstrating the bloodline of Christ and Mary Magdalene, has exerted great effort over the centuries to repress this knowledge in order to maintain its power, most recently through Opus Dei, a militant Catholic sect. In order to explain the mystery of blood-relationship between Mary Magdalene and Jesus in the famous painting “the Last Supper”, the movie gives Teabing a make-up multimedia-plasma electronic display to show the arcane truth in the painting completely. In this part, it is necessary and successful to restore the visual sense, and it elaborates a more vivid and more accurate advantage, as a result, audiences are deeply attracted by this shocking point of view.The second climax comes from Landons awareness in the end of this movie. When he suddenly put down the razor, went out of the hotel, ran to the Louvre Museum along the old golden “Rose Line”, the phenomenon raised because of the participation of music. When he stood at the sparkling glass square and looked from the ground, as if he had seen the stone coffin which the Goddesss corpse slept in. He looked up at the bright starry sky and then he understood the whole thing, But he could not say anything, on the contrast, what he could do was to feel this portion of holy, impression and reverence alone and put the secret deep in heart.Moreove, some of the religion organizations in the movie really exist in the world, but they dont like what the movie tells us. For example, one of the important elements in this movie- the Prieur de Dinothere is a real Priory of Sion in the world. It is an association that was founded in 1956, in the French town of Annemasse, as the beginning of a massive hoax. Whats more, in the movie, it said that Jesus was married and had a family, but “there is no good evidence exists to support this theory”,said Joe Barnhart, professor of philosophy and religion studies at UNT. The real problem with this is that trying to nail down the identity of the historical Jesus is exceedingly difficult. There are about four different views of who Jesus was, but you cannot harmonize these views, he said. The scholars who have devoted years of their lives to studying the origin and development of Christianity regard this (Browns) view as mostly fanciful. Apart from the truth of The Da Vinci Code, just regard it as a fabricated story, and see it from the point view of art, it is a succeed film, at least to me. The movie based on the film, despite receiving uniformly negative critical reviews, has had a worldwide gross of nearly $730,000,000.00.From this data, I also can say that this is a successful movie. When I was seeing this movie, I was impressed by the goddess who suffered a tremendous tribulation. And what deeply touched me was the strengthen of the religion belief that she and her pious defenders conveyed to me.
