Irish proverb Thirty years ago, when I was a doctor in London, on the point of moving to a specials practice in Harley Street, my health broke down. I was told that I must 21 a years rest and that, even so, I might never again be fit to 22 the medical life. What a 23 ! I liked my work. From the humblest (卑微的) beginnings in a small Welsh mining practice, I had slaved to 24 this aim. And now, on the 25 of success, the door was shut hard in my face. My 26 of mind was such that I could not help 27 anger and bitterness to my friends. One of these was an old Irish nun (修女), the Reverend Mother of the Bon Secours, she heard my outburst 28 , then said: “You know, Doctor, we have a saying in Ireland, that if God shuts one door, he opens another.” I did not 29 her remark a second thought and soon after left for a remote district in the West Highlands. Here time hung heavy upon my hands. Suddenly, I had a strong 30 to write. I began a novel, Hatters Castle, and I finished it, packed it up, and 31 it to a publisherwho accepted it! Out of all reason, a door had opened. A new career 32 before me.So many of us, 33 sudden disappointment, misfortune of defeat, raise a cry of anger and resentment against heaven. Why should God do this to me? To be deprived of health, 34 the chance of promotion, to lose ones job, these things are hard to bear, and harder perhaps to understand. Yet we cannot measure God by the yardstick of human mentality. What we think bitter may well be for eventual good. The demands life makes may seem hard at times, yet we ought not to complain. God never takes without giving something 35 . 36 and troubles are often the instruments with which he makes us for better things to come. Life is no straight and easy corridor along which we travel free and smoothly, but a maze of passages, through which we must 37 our way, now lost and 38 , now checked in a blind alley. 39 , always, if we have 40 , God will open a door for us, not perhaps one that we ourselves would ever have thought of, but one that will eventually prove good for us. 21. A team of scientists in Guangzhou, capital of south Chinas Guangdong Province, discovered in a decade-long study that the gene “pax-6” plays an important role in the process of eye development, according to Thursdays China Daily report. The study was to determine the mechanism leading to human short-sightedness based on the role of pax-6 in the causes of the same eye condition in infant rhesus monkeys, said Ge Jian, director of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center under Guangzhous Sun Yat-sen University. “The study means we can reinforce the much-debated idea that most young people become short-sighted from reading too close to books or working too closely to objects such as computer screens,” Ge, who leads the research program, was cited by the Beijing-based newspaper as saying. According to the centers statistics, about 70 per cent of Chinese teenagers are suffering from short-sightedness, much higher than the 6 per cent in the United States. But only less than 5 per cent of them are born susceptible to sight problems, with the rest being affected by the environment, Ge said. Inspired by this phenomenon, Ge and his fellow researchers started the study on short sight in collaboration with Earth Smith and other top professors of Huston University in 1995. Not satisfied with previous studies on flies, mice, chickens and some other animals, they decided to study rhesus monkeys, the physical structure of which is the closest to human beings. 41. BHopefully, washing your hands frequently, strengthen your bodys defenses and keeping a healthy room climate is all that you need to get through the winter without catching a cold, according to Ursula Sellerberg, spokeswoman for the Federal Union of German Associations of Pharmacists. You should wash your hands several times a day if you want to prevent colds, soaping them also between the fingersfor about half a minute, Sellerberg advises. “Disinfectants (消毒) arent usually necessary,” she adds. Colds are caused by viruses, which are transmitted via objects touched by a number of people doorknobs and banisters, for example. Hand washing cuts off this path of infection. You should also touch your face with your hands as little as possible so as to keep viruses away from your mouth, nose and eyes. “Someone with a cold should not sneeze into their hands, but rather into a handkerchief or, when theres no alternative, a sleeve. This prevents infecting (传染) others,” Sellerberg notes. You can harden yourself with alternating warm-and-cold showers, which make the bodys defenses stronger. “Always end with a gush of cold water. This contributes to the important warming-up reaction,” Sellerberg advises. If you are unwilling to showering warm and cold from head to foot, you can simply douse your arms or lower legs. A home cold-water treatment also has a powerful effect. Fill a bath with cold water and step in it stork-like for two minutes. Always begin with warm feet. Regular sauna (桑拿) visits are an additional stimulant for the immune system and walks outdoors in cold weather bolster the bodys defenses, too. But you should bundle up well in a scarf and cap to keep your body from cooling down too much. Although a lot of people like it to be warm and cozy indoors during the wintertime, heating-system air in homes and offices dries out the bodys mucous membranes (黏膜). “This makes it easier for cold viruses to invade the body,” Sellerberg says. What is more, the number of viruses can easily multiply in closed rooms, so fresh air should be let in at homes or offices for 10 minutes, three to four times daily. This creates a healthy room climate. Ideally, the room temperature during the winter should be not more than 19 or 20C. 45. If you want to keep winter colds at bay, _ is not necessary. A. washing your hands frequently B. strengthening your bodys defenses C. letting fresh air in three to four times daily D. disinfecting your room or office regularly 46. According to the passage, _ _ can strengthen your bodys defenses.A. cleaning your hands carefully B. alternating warm-and-cold baths C. keeping your room at 23C D. walking indoors regularly 47. The underlined word “bolster” in the 4th paragraph probably means . A. catch B. prevent C. harden D. keep 48. Whats the passage mainly about? A. Simple tricks to prevent winter colds not too close. B. Several suggestions to prevent catching colds. C. Practical tips to keep rooms or offices clean. D. Proper temperature indoors in winter.COur bodies are wonderfully skillful at keeping balance. When the temperature jumps, we sweat to cool down. When our blood pressure falls, our hearts can do something. As it turns out, though, our natural state is always changing. Researchers are finding that everything from blood pressure to brain function changes regularly with the cycles of sun, moon and seasons. And their insights (洞察力) are getting new ways for keeping away such common killers as heart disease and cancer. Only one doctor in 20 has a good knowledge of the scientific use of time in medicine. But according to a new American Medical Association, three out of four are eager to change that. “The field is exploding,” says Michael Smolensky. “Doctors used to look at us like what spaceship did you get off? Now theyre thirsty to know more. ”In medical school, most doctors learn that people with chronic conditions should take their medicine regularly. “Its a terrible way to treat disease,” says Dr Richard Martin. For example, asthmatics (气喘患者) are most likely to suffer during the night. Yet most patients try to keep a constant level of medicine in their blood day and night, whether by breathing in on an inhaler (吸入器) four times a day or taking a pill each morning and evening. In recent studies, researchers have found that a large mid afternoon dose of a bronchodilator (支气管扩张剂) can be as safe as several small doses, and better for preventing nighttime attacks. If the night belongs to asthma, the dawn belongs to high blood pressure and heart disease. Heart attacks are twice as common at 9 a.m. as at 11 p.m. Part of the reason is that our blood pressure falls at night, then rises as we start to work for the day. “Doctors know that,” says Dr Henry Black of Chicagos Medical Center, “but until now, we havent been able to do anything about it.” Most bloodpressure drugs provide 18 to 20 hours of relief (减缓). But because theyre taken in the morning, theyre least effective when most needed. “You take your pill at 7 and its working by 9,” says Dr William White of the University of Connecticut Health Center “But by that time youve gone through the worst four hours of the day with no protection.” Bedtime medicine would prevent high blood pressure, but it would also push blood pressure to dangerously low levels during the night. 49. According to Paragraph 1, _ _. A. heart disease and cancer are the most common killers of human beingsB. blood pressure and brain function are decided by seasonsC. the functions of human bodies are changing with nature D. the scientific use of time in medicine is aware of by doctors 50. As for asthmatics, it is best for them to take their medicine _ _. A. at certain time B. each morning and eveningC. when the disease occurs D. at mid afternoon51. The suggested title for this passage might be _ _. A. Medicine Is Everything B. Treatment Is EverythingC. Timing Is Everything D. Prevention Is EverythingD Next time you find yourself wet through in an unexpected heavy rain, look on the bright side it will be a memorable experience. While wet weather may make us feel gloomy, it sharpens the memory and improves our recall. But those who feel in a good mood when its a sunny day are able to remember less well, according to memory tests carried by Australian researchers. Professor Joe Forgas, who led the research, said, “It seems strange but a little bit of sadness is a good thing. People performed much better on our memory test when the weather was unpleasant and they were in a slightly negative mood. On bright sunny days, when they were more likely to be happy, they flunked it.”The tests were carried out on shoppers at a store in Sydney, where researchers casually placed ten small objects on the checkout the counter. On rainy days, sad music was played in the store. When it was bright and sunny, customers heard cheery music. This was done to further influence them towards negative or positive moods. After shopping, customers were asked how many of the objects they could remember. Their scores were three times higher when the weather was bad and they were feeling angry, compared with those tested on sunny days. The results were published in Journal of Experimental Psychology. A report on the findings said: “They point to a growing body of evidence that the way people think, the quality of their judgments and the accuracy of their memory are all significantly influenced by positive and negative moods.”Professor Forgas said, “We found that weatherinducted negative mood improved memory accuracy. Shoppers in a negative mood showed better memory and higher discrimination ability.”A worse mood helped to focus peoples attention on their surroundings and led to a more thorough and careful thinking style, while happiness increased confidence and forgetfulness.Being happy tends to promote a thinking style that is less focused on our surroundings. In a positive mood we are less likely to make more hurried judgments about people we meet. Mild negative mood, in turn, tends to increase attention to our surroundings and produce a more careful, thorough thinking style. Accurately remembering everyday scenes is a difficult task, yet such memories can be on importance in everyday life. Surprisingly, the influence of mood states on the accuracy of real-life memories is still poorly understood. 52. Whats
