Unit6An old man tried to move the mountains.Section A 3a邹夏夏 太和北城中学一、Teaching objectives:1.The first objective is on language:Most of the students can understand the main idea of the textThe Monkey King is a symbol of Chinese culture and why people like it;Half of the students can use the 5 words: who, which, when, what, why to find some specific information and tell stories;Some top students can use the reading strategy to make good preparation for their writing.2. Objectives about culture:By knowing some basic information of The Monkey king, a majority of the students will be able to learn the spirits of him;One third will know more about the background of The Monkey King and the reason why people like him;Ss are encouraged to think deeply about the culture of these 2 countries.3. Learning abilities:Most of the students will learn to use the new reading strategy;Half of them can master this strategy correctly and skillfully.二Key points and difficulties1.Key points: how to develop Ss reading skills, which is to get some specific information by using 5Ws, and guide the Ss to express their feelings about the book characters. 2. Difficult points: how to lead the Ss to use this reading strategy correctly, and even in some other passages, and how to guide students to realize the true spirit of The Monkey king and some other “typical characters”.三Teaching methods:Task-based language teaching methods四Teaching Procedures:Step 1. Leading in1. Free talk : Whats your favorite Chinese traditional story? (Purpose: To review what weve learnt in Section A).2. Show a video about Journey to the West.(Purpose: Arouse Ss interests ).Step 2 Pre-reading There are many typical characters in Journey to the West. The Ss are encouraged to guess Which Character is talked in our passage. Most of them can make a prediction of the passage depending on the picture.Step 3 While-reading1. Fast reading For the first reading, they could skim the passage quickly and check their predictions. And then, Ss are led to skim the text again and match the main idea of each paragraph. Whats more, they are asked to underline the key sentences while reading. Purpose(The main idea usually lies at the beginning or the end.) 2. Careful reading To get more details, this time they will read the passage carefully and answer some questions by reading each paragraph. Q1, When and how did pupils in England know The Monkey king for the first time? Q2 ,What can The Monkey King do or not and fill in the blanks. Q3,Why do children like this monkey so much? It is a little difficult for them. I will encourage them not only to find the answers in the passage, but also think about the background of Journey to the West . There were 81 difficulties in this long and rough journey, The monkey always tries his best to protect his partners by using his wisdom and courage. He keeps fighting to help the weak and never give up. So all this spirit make him be loved by children all around the world. After they finish reading, they will observe the 5 questions again. Some top students can point out the important factors of an article main character, which book is he from, time, ability and reason. We can turn them into 5Ws who, which, when, what and why, which makes them easy to remember.3. RetellingAfter reading, a mind map is used to help students retell the passage. Step4.Post readingAfter learning the Monkey King, Ill let Ss think about some typical characters in Western countries like Helen Keller in Three Days to See,or Robinson Crusoe. Students are familiar with these characters or stories. They will work in groups. Ill also provide a sample of Robinson Crusoe. They can choose any characters they know . After 5 minutes discussion, each group chooses a student as the reporter. He or she can show their opinions according to 5Ws . Step 5 Summary and homework1. Summary Well review some ideas about the Monkey King and reading strategies like: skimming,scanning,and how to tell stories with 5Ws. 2. HomeworkThere are 2 levels homework. Level A is for all Students, they can search the information about their favorite cartoon characters on Internet, and talk about it from 5 aspects in brief in next class. Some top Students can choose Level B. Write an introduction according to 5Ws. In this way, Ss in different levels can both review and practice.
