Much of the information we have today about chimpanzees comes from the research of Jane Goodall.Jane Goodall was born in London in 1934. She became interested in animals and animal stories when she was a very young child. She always dreamed of working with wild animals. When she was eleven years old, she decided that she wanted to go to Africa to live with and write about animals. But this was not the kind of thing young women usually did in the 1940s. Everybody was laughing except her mother. “If you really want something, you work hard, you take advantage of opportunity, you never give up, you find a way,” her mother said to her. The opportunity came at last. A school friend invited her to Africa. Jane worked as a waitress until she had got enough money to travel there. In 1957, Jane Goodall traveled to Africa. She soon met the well-known scientist Louis Leakey and began working for him as an assistant. He later asked her to study a group of chimpanzees living by a lake in Tanzania. Very little was known about wild chimpanzees at that time.Jane spent many years studying chimpanzees in this area of Africa. It was not easy work. They were very shy and would run away whenever she came near. She learned to watch them from far away using binoculars. Over time, she slowly gained their trust(信任). She gave the chimpanzees human names such as David Graybeard, Flo and Fifi. Watching the chimpanzees, she made many discoveries. They ate vegetables and fruits. But she found that they also eat meat. A few weeks later, she made an even more surprising discovery. She saw chimpanzees making and using tools(工具) to help them catch insects.Jane Goodall has written many books for adults and children about wild chimpanzees. Her most recent book is called Hope for Animals and Their World. It tells about saving several kinds of endangered animals.(1)根据短文内容完成句子(每空限填一个单词)。From the first two paragraphs we know Jane Goodall is a _, and she had a special interest in _ when she was a young girl.(2)根据短文内容完成句子(每空限填一个单词)。In order to _ to travel to _, Jane Goodall once worked as a waitress.(3)把短文中划底线的句子译成汉语。(4)根据短文内容回答问题。What is Jane Goodalls most surprising discovery?(5)根据短文内容用一个完整的英文句子(限10个词以内)回答问题。What is Jane Goodall famous for?2. They begin their school year in January and it is broken up into three terms. In Kenya, in the past, students were not required to attend school and the education was not free, either.I taught math, English and physics at Chamasiri Secondary School while I was a teacher in Kenya. This school had four classrooms one for each grade, Form 1, Form 2, Form 3 and Form 4. They are the equivalent(对等) to our 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades. Teachers traveled from classroom to classroom instead of the students going from room to room. The Form I class had 60 students, Form 2 had 45, Form 3 had 30, and Form 4 about 12 students. The class sizes became smaller as the grades continued on. Why did this happn? Many families were very poor and could not afford the school fees(学费).Most countryside schools in Kenya did not have a lot of money. As a result, there were very few textbooks for the students to use. I had seven math texts for my Form 2 class and 14 for the Form I class. Anything the students needed to know was put up on the blackboard and the students copied it down into their notebooks. The notebooks became the students textbooks.Kenyan students study ten different subject areas. Some of the students spend over an hour running home. They do chores at home and hopefully manage to find some time to study before it gets dark. Most families do not have electricity and may not even have candies for their children to study by.Luckily, Kenyan education has been becoming better and better in the past few years. Im sure it will have a good future.(1)Which grade does Form 3 refer to(指的是) in the writers country? A . Grade 9.B . Grade 10.C . Grade 11.D . They dont like studying in the school.C . They hope to have more time to study.D . They want to get candles in the stores.(4)According to the passage, which of the following is NOT TRUE? A . In Kenya, a school year has three terms.B . The Form I class had the most students.C . Each family has electricity in Kenya.D . Kenyan education has been improving.4.
