Are you happy in the winter holiday?Ss: Yes.T: What did you do in the holiday?S1: I travel to Shanghai with my parents. Its a modern and beautiful city. I enjoy the beautiful sights of Waitan with my parents. We went to the Oriental Pearl TV Tower. It is 468meters tall. Its the highest TV tower in Asia and the third tallest in the world. From the tower, we can get a clear view of the whole city. Now it is the tourists favorite place. T: Good. I want to go to Shanghai too. Any volunteer?S2: I read an interesting novel about Harry Potter. He is so smart. I like him very much. So I go to see the film about Harry potter with my parents. I am very happy.T: Interesting. Today is the first day of the new term. So we should have a good beginning. Do you remember Eddie and Hobo?Ss: Yes.T: OK. Lets look at the comic strip. What happened between Eddie and Hobo this time? Ill give you four minutes to read the comic strip with your partners. Then I will ask you some questions. OK. Lets begin.Show the questions on the screen. 1. What did Eddie do?2. Why?3. Eddie pretended he cant understand why Hobo is angry. At last, he even starts to blame him using the same kind of language Hobo has just used. But I think they will be fine later, because they are good friends. Show some pictures to Ss. T: Now, please look at the two pairs of pictures. Can you find out the differences of these pictures between the first line and the second line? Ill give you five minutes to discuss with your partners. Lets begin.Give Ss five minutes to discuss and move around to give then a hand.T: Time is up. Are you ready?Ss: Yes. T: The first pair. S1: The first pair of pictures is about transport. The first picture is trolley. It was the main vehicle many years ago. But now we hardly see it in the city. The second picture is underground. It is the main vehicle in many modern cities. Its very convenient.T: Good. Vehicle is a very important part in our daily life. The next pair,please.S2: The second pair of pictures is about habitation. The first picture is simple house. Many people live in a house. There are many inconveniences. The second picture is high building. Today, people live in their flats are very convenient.Step II Speaking T: Good. There are many changes in the world every day. Now lets look at the pictures on Page 3. There are eight pictures about transport. Daniel wants to collect more information before he does the history project. He found some information about the different forms of transport in Hong Kong. Now discuss with your partners and write down the correct names under the pictures.Give Ss five minutes to discuss and move around to give them a hand.T: Time is up. Are you ready?Ss: Yes. T: OK. The first picture. S1: The first picture is light rail. It served since 1988.T: Yes. The light rail in Hong Kong only serves the northwest New Territories. There are eight routes. The second picture, please.S2: The second picture is peak tram. It served since 1888.T: Good. Next, please.S3: The third picture is train. It served since 1910.T: The train is a very important transport in Hong Kong. It connects Hong Kong with Mainland China. The fourth picture.S4: The fourth picture is underground. It served since 1979.T: Right. The underground in Hong Kong is called MRT. The first MRT route opened in 1979. 2.4 million people now use the underground every day. Do you know which city in China has underground?S5: Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin and Guangzhou.T: Good. Many cities are building the underground, such as Nanjing, Wuhan, Changchun, Dalian, Chengdu and so on. OK. Who is the next?S5: The picture is tram. It serves since 1904.T: Good. Next picture.S6: This picture is bus. It served since 1921. Its the main vehicle in many cities.T: Good. The first bus company to operate in Hong Kong was the Kowloon Motor Company. OK. Who is the next?S7: Its ferry. It served since 1898.T: Well done. The last picture. S8: The last picture is plane. It served in 1925. T: Right. Hong Kong airdrome is one of the biggest airdromes in the world. Step III practiceT: You did a good job. Now please close your book. Look at the screen.Show the following sentences to Ss. Ask them to guess which mode of transport the sentences are describing. 1. It has traveled across Victoria Harhour, between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon since 1898.2. Its an easy way to get to the top of the peak.3. There are many of them. Each one has wheels and takes you to many places in and around Hong Kong.4. It has provided transport service for people living in the north-west New Territories since 1988.5. It has the fastest way of traveling and was introduced to Hong Kong in 1925.6. Use the information from Part A to help Daniel complete the timeline.Ask Ss to write the names on the correct points on the line. Then check the answer.Step IV GameAsk one student to come the front of the class and think of a mode of transport. The other students have to ask questions to try to guess what the student is thinking of. The student at the front can only say “yes” or “no”. The first student who guesses correctly thinks of another mode of transport and the game continues.Step V Homework1. Read the context of Part A.2. Review the different forms of transport.3. Can you tell me some changes in our city?S1: Yes. First, the environment has improved. There are more trees and flowers. Now our city looks more beautiful.T: Good. Anything else?S2: The traffic jam has been improved. The traffic is convenient.T: Yes. Everyday there are many changes in our life. If you pay more attention, you will find more changes.Step III ReadingIn this step, Ss will get more knowledge about the changes Hong Kong.T: Lily is an exchange student from Hong Kong. She is now in Class 1, Grade 8. Her grandpa Mr Dong came to Beijing to visit her. He used to live in the Kowloon Walled City in Hong Kong. Millie wants to write about the changes to this place for her history project. She is now interviewing Mr Dong to get some information. Before we listen to the tape, I want to ask you a question. Have you been to the Kowloon Walled City Park in Hong Kong?Ss: No.T: Last period, I ask you to find out some information about the Kowloon Walled City. What do you know about the history of the Kowloon Walled City?S1: I found some information about it. The Kowloon Walled City was established in 1898 when the Chinese retained judicial control over the area. Originally, it was the site of a Chinese garrison and walled in. It developed into a Chinese garrison and walled in.S2: There was friction between the British authorities and the residents, and the Walled City was virtually free from colonial and the residents, and the Walled City was virtually free from colonial rules. For years, it remained a no-go area for the police.S3: By 1991, all of them had been rehoused elsewhere and compensated. The site was then leveled in 1993 and turned into a park. There are some relics of the Kowloon Walled City being exhibited in the park. T: Good job. Now lets listen to the tape. After listening, I want to ask you a question. Does Mr Dong live in the Kowloon Walled City now? Play the tape recorder. T: Have you got the answer? Dose Mr Dong live in the Kowloon Walled City now?Ss: No.T: Very good. Now read the interview with your partners and then follow along in your books. Underline any words you do not understand and try to guess their meanings from the context.Give Ss several minutes, and show some questions on the slide.1. Where was Mr Dong born?2. Have one group read the part of Millie and the other group read the part of Mr Dong.T: Through the interview, we got some information of the Kowloon Walled City. Now, lets retell the interview we learnt today. Here I have some key words for you. Please try to retell the interview according to them.Key words:block, flat, 1991, park, Chinese medicine shops, dentist, market stalls, old friend, airport, open spaceSample:Mr Dong was born in the Kowloon Walled City. He first lived in a block in the Kowloon Walled City with his parents. Then he moved out of the Kowloon Walled City in 1991 because the government wanted to build a new park there. In the past there are Chinese medicine shops, dentists and market stalls. Now he often met his old friends in the new park to play cards and Chinese chess. In the past, the old airport was noisy but now its quiet. There are open space and pretty gardens.If there is enough time, the teacher divides the class into pairs. Ask students to interview each other about how they think Hong Kong has changed since 1997when 150 years of British rule ended and Hong Kong was returned to China.Step VI TaskT: You have known the changes in the Kowloon Walled City.
