Yesterday, there was a rainstorm. Where were they when the rainstorm came? For example: A: Where were you when the rainstorm came? B: I was in the library. A: What were you doing when the rainstorm came? B: I was waiting for the bus at the bus stop. 2. Explain the use of “was / were +doing”. 3. Show the students the phrases by showing several pictures. in the library, in my house, on the street, at the bus stop 4. (1a) Where were the people at the time of the rainstorm? Match the statements with the people in the picture. Step 2 Listening 1. (1b) What were they doing when the rainstorm came? Listen to the tape and circle the correct responses. Pay attention to “was/were +doing”. 2. Check the answers. Step 3 Practice 1. Look at the pictures and answer the questions by using “was/ were + doing”. For example: A: What was the boy doing at the time of the rainstorm? B: He _. 2. (1c) Talk about what the people in 1a were doing at the time of the rainstorm. Step 4 Presentation 1. Make sentences with “what” and “when”.Eg: What were people doing yesterday at the time of the rainstorm (when it began to rain heavily)? 2. Check up several pairs. Step 5 Listening 2a, 2b 1. Talk about the five pictures by using “Where was she/ he when the rainstorm suddenly came?” or “What was she / he doing when the rainstorm suddenly came ?”2. Play the tape for the students to listen and number 1-5 in the order. 3. Listen again and fill in the blanks in the sentences in 2a. 4. Check the answers. Step 6 Work on 2c 1. Use the information in 2a to retell the story in a conversation between the boy and a TV reporter. 2. Ask some pairs to role play their conversations. Step 7 Role-play Work on 2d 1.
