文档简介

Food lessonFood is topic; write on board Encourage them to take lots of notes during these classesWhat are your favourite foods? (Elicit from students what are their favourite foods)What English foods have you heard of? (maybe fish and chips comes up). Idea is to engage them in the topic. Have any of you already been to UK or abroad and if so what can you tell us about the food? Are you brave? Give them Marmite crackers to taste. Then show PPT with pictures of foods. Breakfast:The first meal of the day in the morning is breakfast (usually eaten between about 7:30 and 9:00). Many British people eat toast with butter or margarine and jam (often strawberry, raspberry, apricot or blackcurrant jam), marmalade (a type of jam made from oranges) or Marmite (a dark brown spread made from yeast). Melon, grapefruit or fruit cocktail are popular. Others eat a bowl of cereal; for example, cornflakes or muesli with milk, or porridge (a mixture of oats, hot milk and sugar). A traditional English breakfast (also known as a cooked breakfast or a fry-up) is a cooked meal which may contain food such as sausages, bacon, kippers (herring - a type of fish - which has been covered in salt and smoked), black pudding, scrambled or fried or poached egg (for details about how to cook a poached egg, see: ), mushrooms, fried tomatoes, baked beans, hash browns and toast. People sometimes eat a boiled egg, dipping (dunking) strips of toast (soldiers) into the egg yolk. A continental breakfast is a small meal and is not cooked; for example, a bread roll or croissant with cheese or ham and a cup of coffee. The most common drinks at this time of day are orange juice or a cup of breakfast tea. English breakfast/cooked breakfast: beaked beans, bacon, sausages, eggs, mushrooms, fried bread. Continental breakfast = croissants, coffee, juice. Normal family breakfast is cereal, or toast. Next slide shows the variety of cereals available. Many people have a tea-break at about 11:00 in the morning (elevenses). If a meal is eaten in the late morning instead of both breakfast and lunch, it is called brunch. Lunch: often sandwiches (but of course not always)Lunch (sometimes called more formally luncheon) is the meal eaten in the middle of the day (usually between about 12:30 and 2:00). Many people eat a sandwich (also known as a butty or sarnie in some parts of the UK). Some people have a simple meal such as cheese and biscuits or soup and bread. A ploughmans lunch is a traditional lunch for farmers: a bread roll, Cheddar cheese, Branston pickle and salad, perhaps with a pork pie. It is also traditional for people to go to a pub with some friends for a pub lunch and a drink.Salads: need to talk about how we eat a lot of salad compared with China: ingredients are lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes, eggs, carrots, and all kinds of other stuff: meat, onions, croutons, etc. With dressing.Dinner:High tea is a light meal eaten in the early evening (for example, 6 oclock) served with a pot of tea; this is popular in north England and Scotland. Supper is the most common name for the meal eaten in the evening (usually between 7:00 and 8:30). Dinner is another common name for supper, but sometimes it is also used to refer to lunch, especially when this is the main meal of the day. A dinner party is a formal evening meal to which guests have been invited. Fish and chips, bangers and mash, shepherds pie, Sunday lunch, ploughmans (lunch), Christmas Dinner, toad-in-the-holeDesserts (give alternate names like afters, pudding, sweet)Discussion and Tea BreakAsk them what they noticed about the foods: maybe no rice, maybe lots of potatoes. Food is generally eaten in one person portions rather than shared as in China. Note that vegetables are normally boiled and are often soggy and do not have much taste.Tea: demonstrate tea making and give them each a cup. Very much part of popular every day culture: here are some common phrases you will hear:“Ill just put the kettle on”, “make a nice cup of tea”, “have a cupper”, sometimes might even hear charNot my cup of tea = thats not something I likenot for all the tea in China = I would never do that (e.g. do a bungee jump)Non-traditional food:Chinese, Indian, Italian etc warn them about Chinese foodPubs: serve food as well as drink. Must be 18 to buy alcoholPractical tips:Drink water from tap, fruit does not need to be washed or peeled, Take chilli or Tabasco sauce etc along to mealsSmoking banned in restaurants and pubs (most enclosed areas) and you must be over 18 to buy tobacco; 18 to buy alcohol people cannot cook rice properly, , Summarise some of the main differences between English and Chinese food systems:UKCHINAmannerIndiv portions; knife/forkGroup portions; chopsticksstaplePotatoes (pasta, bread, rice)Rice (pasta)How cookedBaked (grilled, fried)Fried (steamed)Main meatbeefporkBreakfast is very different. We tend to eat a lot of cold food and sandwiches.Staples are differentIf invited to someones house for a meal:Take a small gift, like a box of chocolates or flowersBe polite: say please and thank youIf you are asked if you want something, be honest! You can say the food was delicious, or lovely. If you do not want anymore, you can say Im full. This is the time to practise turning things down. Let them try . Then offer them more. While it is good to get used to English food or you will never be comfortable, you should also fall back on Chinese food when you need to. You may have to cook it yourself or find other Chinese who can direct you to a good place. In a Chinese restaurant ask the staff to make you what they eat rather than what is on the menu.Review: End of lesson give them
