Unit 1 The measure of a mans real character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out. Thomas Macaulay Some thirty years ago, I was studying in a public school in New York. One day, Mrs. Nantette ONeill gave an arithmetic _1_ to our class. When the papers were _2_ she discovered that twelve boys had made exactly the _3_ mistakes throughout the test. There is nothing really new about _4_ in exams. Perhaps that was why Mrs. ONeill _5_ even say a word about it. She only asked the twelve boys to _6_ after class. I was one of the twelve. Mrs. ONeill asked _7_ questions, and she did not _8_ us either. Instead, she wrote on the blackboard the _9_ words by Thomas Macaulay. She then ordered us to _10_ these words into our exercise-books one hundred times. I dont _11_ about the other eleven boys. Speaking for _12_ I can say: it was the most important single _13_ of my life. Thirty years after being _14_ to Macaulays words, they _15_ seem to me the best yardstick(准绳), because they give us a _16_ to measure ourselves rather than others. _17_ of us are asked to made _18_ decisions about nations going to war or armies going to battle. But all of us are called _19_ daily to make a great many personal decisions. _20_ the wallet, found in the street, be put into a pocket _21_ turned over to the policeman? Should the _22_ change received at the store be forgotten or _23_? Nobody will know except _24_. But you have to live with yourself, and it is always _25_ to live with someone you respect. 1. C。 4. B。/ 5. A。此处的语境是:由于当时考试舞弊(cheating)并不是什么新鲜事,所以老师对此只字未提(didnt even say a word about it)。6. C。 7. A。注意下文的 noteither(也没有),它表明上文应该表示否定意义。8. D。 A。 12. A。 16. A。way 的意思是“方法”,a way to measure oneself 在此表示“检测某人行为的方法”。17. B。/ 18. C。 句中涉及的句型 call upon sb to do sth 表示要求某人做某事。20. A。 22. A。extra change received at the store But you have to live with yourself 可知此处应选 you,否则上下文人称不一致。25. C。 Unit 2Todd was working at his gas station(加油站) at night when he heard over the radio that a _1_ in Long Island had been _2_ by an armed man who had killed the night guard and got away with $150,000. “One hundred and fifty thousand,” Todd whistled. Heres a fellow who just _3_ into a bank and helps himself _4_ so much money. Todd thought of the _5_ with which he managed to get the amount of money he _6_ to start his gas station. So many papers to _7_. So much money to pay back. The news _8_ twenty minutes later. The gunman had _9_ a car for a ride, and then _10_ out the driver. He was possibly _11_ the Southern State Parkway in a white Ford. License plate(车牌) number LJR 1939. The _12_ of the announcer continued: “_13_ out for white cars. Dont pick up _14_, and all you folks in gas stations better not do _15_ to a white Ford car.” Todd stood up and _16_ to see out into the cold night. It was dark but Todd _17_ the Southern State Parkway was out there. Just _18_, Todd saw the headlights coming at him and a car pulled in for _19_. There it was, a white Ford. He saw the _20_, LJR 1939. “What should I do?” Todd had to make a quick _21_. “Yes, sir?” Todd _22_ while making up his mind for sure. “_23_ her up,” the man said sounding like any other _24_. When the tank(油箱) was full, Todd quickly turned round and pointed a gun at the man. “Hands up _25_ get out.” 1. A. storeB. bankC. stationD. house2. B。 Heres a fellow who just walks into a bank and中的 bank 可知答案。2. D。 3. A。just walk into a bank and 其余几个选项 looks(看),marches(行军),drives(开车)在些均不合语境。4. C。help oneself to sth 6. D。he needed 是定语从句,修饰 the amount of money。 所以这里说 so many papaers to sing。8. A。 9. D。根据故事情节,凶手杀人抢钱后不可能去 bought 或borrowed 一辆汽车来逃走,至于选项 C (stolen)则与下文提到的 and then pushed out the driver 不符。10. D。 12. D。注意空格后作定语的介词短语 of the announcer,由于 Todd 是在听收音机,也就是在职听 the voice of the announcer。13. A。 16. A。 17. B。从下文看,凶手最终还是来到了他的加油站,这说明前面报道的凶手逃走的 the Southern State Parkway 就在 Todd 加油站的附近一带,所以尽管天很黑,他仍然 knew the Southern State Parkway was out there。18. A。 21. A。make a decision 意为“作决定”,与前面的 What should I do 为同一方面的意思。22. D。 句中的 her 指 the car。24. C。 Unit 3Ella Fant was a middle-aged lady who lived with her only son John in a small house. She _1_ John very much. In her _2_ he couldnt do anything _3_. Every morning she would give him breakfast _4_ bed and bring him the papers to _5_. A。 6. A。 注意作者用 in first week, managed to, at least 等所表达的语气。9. C。根据下文的 on his second day a passenger stole his bag with all the fares collected 可知,他 became 一名公共汽车售票员。10. A。on his second day 指“在他上班的第二天”。11. B。 15. A。根据下文提到的表示结果的 that she told the news to all her neighbours,可以推知 Mrs. Fant 对儿子参军一事很激动(excited)。16. C。 18. C。when 引导定语从句修饰 the great day。19. A。 He is going to be the best soldier there ever was, I can tell you 可以推知,这是一位 proud mother。20. B。 22. A。 24. A。 Theyre all out of step except my John! 25. D。out of pace 意为“步伐不一致”,注意联系上文的 laughing at the one who couldnt keep pace with the others。Unit 4People of Burlington are being disturbed by the sound of bells. Four students from Burlington College of Higher Education are in the bell tower of the _1_ have made up their minds to _2_ the bells nonstop for two weeks as a protest (抗议) against heavy trucks which run _3_ through the narrow High Street.“They not only make it _4_ to sleep at night, but they are _5_ damage to our houses and shops of historical _6_,” said John Norris, one of the protesters.“_7_ we must have these noisy trucks on the roads,” said Jean Lacey, a biology student. “Why dont they build a new road that goes _8_ the town? D。 I mean we are assistant bell ringers for the church。 2. C。ring the bells 意为“敲钟”。 They make it difficult to sleep at night 可推知答案选 B。短语 day and night 的意思是“日夜”。4. B。 5. A。 7. A。 These chairs are meant for guests. 11. C。根据信息词 also studying 和前面一段中的 a biology student 可推知,Harry Fields 是学“生物学”的。12. D。 D。make as much noise as possible 14. A。 17. A。 20. A。 23. A。 I mean we are assistant bell-ringers for the church 可知,此题填 proper 最合适。24. D。 25. A。 Unit5He has been called the missing link. Half-man, half-beast. He is supposed to live in the highest mountain in the world - Mount Everest.
