Questions 1 to 5 are based on the same passage or dialog. You must face the fact that in your inmost heart you hate the thought of moving. It is easiest not to leave the rooms where your children passed through their wonderful childhood and annoying teens to a friendly but slightly distant maturity.Until, suddenly one day, the distance is absolute and they are grown up and gone. Then you find yourself living in too large a house, which consumes in its maintenance too much energy and money. When we found ourselves in this situation a few years ago, we determined to move while we still had the strength and before the emotional ties that the old house had wrapped around us became too powerful to be broken. Move while you can! But be sure you really want to, and do not move too often. It is an exhausting process.Your first task is to find a house that will suit you. It must be smaller, quieter, easier to run, and more conveniently placed for transport. Not so small, though, that it will not have room for your largest pieces of furniture, and located not too far from the neighborhood where so many friendships have been built up.At last we found one: a late Victorian cottage, in a street where the houses, all small, range from late 18th to mid 20th century. It was near enough to where we wanted to live. It had no basement (底下层), which was a great convenience for aging legs; there were only two floors: one for ourselves and one where friends, children, and grandchildren could spread themselves when they came to stay. Each floor had two rooms. There was a kitchen on the ground floor, with the bathroom above it. 1. The passage concerns _. A. buying a house for a newly married couple B. buying a large house for a growing family C. buying a better house when people have more money to spend D. buying a smaller house for older people whose children have left home 2. The passage implies that grown-up children are _. A. more friendly to their parents when they are grown up B. distant from their parents C. friendly but not very close D. annoying 3. The author decided to move _. A. when his house gave him too much work and cost too much to run B. when he grew tired of his house C. when he suddenly got the strength to do so D. before the house collapsed 4. The author advises people in his own situation _. A. to move into a very small house B. to move somewhere where the largest possible pieces of furniture will fit C. not to move too far from the main road D. to choose somewhere not so noisy 5. According to the passage, the new house had _. A. two floors B. three floors C. four floors D. two bathrooms Questions 6 to 10 are based on the same passage or dialog. For most people learning to drive, the driving test arises ahead as a major barrier. It is also a general source of conversation whenever drivers are gathered together. There are probably more tall stories about the driving test than about any other motoring subjects; the most remarkable thing about those stories is the number of times the old ones appear again, years after they were first heard, in new and exaggerated forms. All driving examiners have had to pass a very strict selection process, followed by at least six weeks training. In the course of this training the Department makes sure that their driving is of a consistently high standard.Driving test centers are chosen with equal care. It would be nice to have centers and examiners town by town. But this is just not possible, because the centers have to be at places where there is enough parking space for candidates (考生) and where there are enough test routes. Routes are carefully chosen to make sure that they are all roughly comparable-the proportion of right and left turns, hills, pedestrian (行人) crossings and so on. The object of all this is to make sure, as far as possible, that all candidates in the driving test have to cope with the same sort of conditions whether they take the test in New York or California. The work that examiners do in actually carrying out tests is checked continuously by supervising examiners. This is to make as sure as possible that every candidate for the driving test has a proper and equal chance of showing the examiner, in the words of the Regulations, that he is competent to drive without danger to and with due consideration for other users of the road. This is all that the examiner is concerned with. 6. It can be learned from the passage that _. A. whenever people learning to drive get together, they often talk about the driving test B. new and exaggerated stories about the test are always appearing C. there are more tall stories about the driving test than any other subject D. the same stories about the test reappear years later 7. According to the passage, driving examiners _. A. are trained for six weeks, then have a difficult selection interview B. are given regular driving tests themselves by supervising examiners C. sometimes have more than six weeks training D. are tested during the selection process to see if their driving is of a high standard 8. There isnt a test center in every town because _. A. some examiners can go to occasional centers from the permanent centers B. routes and conditions have to be the same everywhere C. there has to be enough parking space for the candidates and the examiners D. not every town could provide enough test routes close to permanent centers 9. We can judge from this passage that _. A. the detailed records are checked after each test by a supervising examiner B. sometimes candidates are tested by a supervising examiner C. its true that some examiners never pass anyone on Thursday afternoons D. examiners are only concerned with a candidates ability to drive 10. It can be inferred from this passage that _. A. test routes have roughly the same conditions everywhere B. candidate drivers pass the test C. all candidates are treated equally by the examiners during the test D. some test centers do not have enough parking space Questions 11 to 15 are based on the same passage or dialog. Summer is the ideal time of year for one of my favorite outdoor activities, hiking (徒步旅行). It is much more than just a great workout. You get to be outside of the confines of a gym and be together with nature. You breathe in the fresh, clean air while the city life you endured all week just fades away. You are suddenly transported somewhere else. You are suddenly in a place where you can appreciate the untouched, simplistic beauty of nature. The trees are green, the wild flowers are growing and the woods are filled with activity. Once you experience it, youre hooked.Whether hiking in the deserts of Arizona or the mountains of Alberta, you suddenly realize you are not alone and there is something much bigger at work. There is a realization that life is precious and you think deeply about your life.Another wonderful part of hiking is that you can participate at any level and it is, for the most part, free. It is a great way to escape the rat race, even during the week. If you have any problems you need to solve, hiking is really good for clearing your head and removing stress. If hiking sounds intimidating to you, it is essentially walking on a whole new level. Experts have spoken about the benefits of walking for years. Walking doesnt stress your legs as much as running and countless studies agree walking leads to weight loss and better health. It is good for your heart, reduces illness and has even been shown to enhance your thinking. So why wouldnt you want to do it? 11. What makes hiking different from other forms of exercise? A. It is a great workout. B. It is a summertime activity. C. It is an activity that slows breathing. D. It is an exercise that is done outside. 12. What disappears for someone who is hiking? A. Green trees. B. Beautiful nature. C. City life. D. Precious things. 13. Once you take up hiking in nature as something you do, you _. A. feel much bigger than before B. love it and want to do it often C. wish you lived outside of the city D. look for new hiking places, like Arizona 14. How do you feel after youve begun hiking? A. Intimidated. B. Thoughtful. C. Lonely. D. Free from stress. 15. How is running different than walking? A. Running is harder on the legs. B. Running is better for weight loss. C. Running is good for a persons heart. D. Running is a cause for improved thinking. Questions 16 to 20 are based on the same passage or dialog. Language is a way to communicate with each other. We started to learn language when we were born. However, people are used to speaking their native language, so immigrants are having many problems between the first generation and the second generation because they dont have the same native language. Also, the second generation is losing their identity. Especially in America, there are many immigrants that came from different countries to succeed in the States. Because they suffer in lots of areas such as getting a job and trying to speak English, they want their children to speak English, not only at school, but also at home in order to be more successful. Because of this situation, their children are losing their ethnic identity and, even more, they are ignoring their parents whose English is not very good.I think most immigrants are trying to preserve their native language in their new country, but this doesnt help very much in getting a good job. My aunt didnt teach Korean to her children in order to help them succeed in the US; she did so, hopefully, to help them establish a Korean identity. Though the second generation is born in the new country, they often get confused about their identity. My cousins told me that when they visited Korea a few years ago, they felt different from other Koreans. They could even feel it just strolling around the street because they wore different clothes. We must realize that language is important and valuable for many reasons. Immigrants should make an effort not to be ignored by their children and to make their children understand their heritage by teaching them the parents language. This is important in helping the second generation establish their identity. 16. Which people are having trouble with language? A. Natives. B. People of the 2nd generation. C. People when born. D. Immigrants. 17. Why are children ignoring their parents? A. Children have lost their identity. B. Parents cause children to suffer. C. They speak different languages. D. They have different job levels. 18. The authors aunt taught Korean _. A. so she could preserve her language B. so she would have a job in America C. to help children succeed in their new country D. to help children keep their Korean identity 19. The authors cousins felt _. A. they were not similar to people in Korea B. they could not get a job in America C. it was all right to look and feel different D. it was important to keep their identity 20. A proper title for this passage is _. A. The Identity of the Second Generation B. Korean Problems in America C. Learning a New Language in the US D.
