LISTENING TEXTAN AMAZING ACHIEVEMENTBarry Minto has just made a successful climb of Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa. Listen to him being interviewed on the radio. JOAN:Today we have Barry Minto in our studio. Barry has just completed a climb of Mount Kilimaniaro, the tallest mountain in Africa. Barry, welcome to our programme. And congratulations on your amazing climb. BARRY:Thank you. Its good to be here. JOAN:Now, Barry, this was a very special climb, wasnt it?BARRY:Yes, thats right. Part of the group had very poor eyesight, or were blind like me, and the other half were sighted people who came along to help us. JOAN:And how old were the climbers?BARRY:Our weak-sighted and blind group were between 16 and 19 years old. JOAN:And the sighted climbers?BARRY:They were between 25 and 45. JOAN:And why did you make such a difficult climb?BARRY: For two main reasons. For ourselves and to raise money. We wanted to prove to ourselves and everyone else that even though we have a disability, we can achieve whatever we decide to do. And we also wanted to raise money to help other people with weak sight. JOAN:Well, that was a big challenge. How tall is Mount Kilimanjaro?BARRY:About 5,900 metres. JOAN:Thats very high! So how many of you got to the top of the mountain?BARRY:That was really interesting. Of the 12 sight-impaired and blind climbers, 9 made it to the top of the mountain. Of the 15 sighted climbers, only 7 made it. JOAN:Oh, well done!BARRY:Yes, it just shows you how determined the blind climbers were. JOAN:How long did it take you?BARRY:Five days to climb up and just two days to come down. JOAN:Well, Barry. Im full of admiration for you and your companions. You have achieved something quite remarkable. BARRY: Thanks. Were very proud of ourselves. JOAN:Mm, you should be. So, Barry, whats your next big challenge?BARRY:Well, Im going to university next year, but Im still going to go climbing whenever I can. My ambition is to climb Mount Qomolangma one day. JOAN:Amazing. I wish you every success in the future, Barry. For example, they might have had problems walking over rough ground, they would have to be careful not to close to the edge where they could fall, it would probably have been difficult to put up the tents they slept in, they would need to concentrate so they could hear the I instructions their sighted companions were giving them. 2 The sighted people would have acted as their eyes. They would have walked beside them and given them instruction about where to go and what obstacles were in their way, they would probably have led them by the hand at certain times, they would have helped them put up their tents. They would have described what food was on their plates and helped them get into their tents. They would have read the maps and sign posts.
