It is likely that your living room will have a television set and a video, and your kitchen a washing machine and a microwave oven. Your bedroom drawers will be filled with almost three times as many clothes as you need. You almost certainly own a car and possibly a home computer, holiday abroad at least once a year and eat out at least once a week. Now, perhaps, more than ever before, people are wondering what life is all about, and what it is for. Seeking material success is beginning to trouble large numbers of people around the world. They feel that the long hours work culture to make more money is eating up their lives, leaving them very little time or energy for family or pastimes. Many are turning to other ways of living and downshifting is one of them. Six percent of workers in Britain took the decision to downshift last year. One couple who downshifted is Daniel and Liz. They used to work in central London. He was a newspaper reporter and she used to work for an international bank. They would go to work by train every day from their large house in the suburbs, leaving their two children with a nanny. Most evenings Daniel wouldnt get home until eight or nine oclock and nearly twice a month he would have to fly to New York for meetings. They both earned a large amount of money but began to feel that life was passing them by. Nowadays, they run a farm in the mountains of Wales. “I always wanted to have a farm then,” says Daniel, “and we took almost a year to make the decision to downshift. Its taken some getting used to, but its been worth it. We have to think twice now about spending money on car repairs and we no longer have any holidays. However, I think its made us stronger as a family, and the children are a lot happier.Liz, however, is not quite sure. “I used to enjoy my job, even though it was hard work and long hours. Im not really a country girl, but I suppose Im gradually getting used to looking after the animals. One thing I do like, though, is being able to see more of my children. My advice for other people wanting to do the same is not to think about it too much or you might not do it at all.”21The passage tells us that .Apeople seldom work long hours to make moneyBpeople hardly buy more things than necessaryCpeople are sure everything they own is in the right placeDpeople realize there is more to life than just making money22When Daniel was a reporter he _.Alived in central London Bdisliked his jobCmissed his children Dwas well paid23Daniel and Liz both agree that the move to the farm _.Awas easy to organize Bhas improved family lifeCwas extremely expensive Dhas been a total success24What does the author mean by saying“the long hours work culture to make more money is eating up their lives” in the second paragraph ?APeople work long hours to earn their living.BTo make more money through hard work is the aim of peoples life.CLong hours of hard work occupy too much of peoples life.DPeople spent too much time and money eating meals.B Bangkok has become the worlds top tourist destination, with 15.98 million visitors projected to visit Thailands capital city this year, according to the third annual Global Destination Cities Index released by MasterCard on Monday. Based on data MasterCard collected from governments, central banks, related public agencies and airlines so far this year, the projection for the entire year says Bangkok is surpassing (超过) London, the previous holder of the top place, by a very narrow margin. Mondays report marked the first time an Asian city has been projected to be the top-ranked tourist destination. London came in second, with 15.96 million visitors expected in 2013, and Paris, third, with 13.92 million visitors. MasterCard looked at 132 cities. The study found that Bangkok is experiencing a large increase in its number of tourists in 2013, up 9.8% from 2009. That compares to New Yorks increase at 5.0% and Londons at 3.8%. Paris, meanwhile, saw a small dip in its number of tourists (negative 0.7%). Caroline Lledo, who was visiting Bangkok from France, said Thailand has many offerings. “We like culture and the people are so nice. We also love shopping here,” Ms. Lledo said. The black-framed glasses are compatible (兼容的) with recent Android operating systems. Last month Google announced that it was withdrawing its smart glasses for redevelopment. Sonys initial model will come with a software development kit to encourage people to design apps for it, the company said. The glasses, which weigh 77g, contain an accelerometer, gyroscope, compass, image and brightness sensors, 3-megapixel camera and a microphone. They also come with a controller, designed to be attached to clothing, which contains a speaker, touch sensor and the devices battery. Text is displayed in front of the wearer in monochrome green. Apple chief executive Tim Cook has been open about his dislike of glasses as a wearable device. “We always thought that glasses were not a smart move, from a point of view that people would not really want to wear them,” he told the New Yorker. “They were intrusive (闯入的), instead of pushing technology to the background, as weve always believed.” Stuart Miles, founder of tech site Pocket-lint, said: “I think Sony is wasting their time, energy and effort.” “Google Glass obviously needed a complete rethink. I cant see how something thick-rimmed and more invasive-looking than Google Glass is going to catch on.“People are keen on wearables like fitness bands and watches, but they care about their faces. Wearing something on your head is a lot stronger than wearing something on your arm,” he added. “The industry keeps pushing it but consumers just dont want it.”29. Telemedicine has existed for a long time, but the rise of smart phones, tablets and webcam-equipped computers is raising telemedicine to new levels. Some health care systems in the United States now offer Virtual Urgent Care, patients see a doctor by video chat without having to leave home. Diana Rae is a nurse educator in the western state of Washington. She recently showed how Virtual Urgent Care works. She used an iPad tablet and skype the video chat service. Doctor Green has the patient describe her symptoms, then the doctor performs a physical exam by demonstrating what he wants her to do. Doctor Green decides that the problem is a silence infection. For medicine, he prescribes an antibiotic. He says about 3 out of 4 patients have health problems that can be treated like this through Virtual Urgent Care, that means a video chat could replace a visit to the doctors office. The Franciscan Health System is based in Tacoma, Washington. Franciscan charges $35 for this kind of virtual house call, that is much less than the cost of going to an emergency room, a doctors office or an urgent care clinic. After trying the video conference, Diana Rae says, “I wouldve paid twice that for the convenience of getting taken care of without having to sit in a waiting room, wait, and get exposed to everyone elses germs.” Franciscan has a deal with a company called Carena to add virtual urgent care by Skype or phone. Carena is one of several companies doing this kind of work around the country. But a company official says state rules have not kept progress with developments in telemedicine. The workers who provide virtual urgent care must be separately licensed in each state where the company does business. For now, that means Carena doctors can treat patients in Washington state and California for example, but not in neighboring Oregon or Idaho.32.The second paragraph is mainly used to show _.A. why telemedicine becomes popular B. the advantages of telemedicineC. many factors contribute to telemedicine D. what telemedicine is33.
