Master the key words and sentences in this period. 2. Master the usage of adverbial clauses with when and while. 3. Learn to talk about past events using the past continuous tense.Teaching Difficulties Learn how to use the past continuous tense in different forms.Teaching Methods Employ task-based teaching mode, and get the students to learn sentence patterns by listening and speaking practice. Preparation before the period An English textbook, a tape recorder and some pictures Teaching ProceduresStep 1 Lead in 1. Greet the students as usual. 2. Revise the present continuous tense: Ask some students to do different things in front the class and practice talking using the following pictures: T: What is/are doing? Ss: is/are playing basketball/skipping. Help the class revise the present continuous tense. Step 2 Presentation and practice 1. T: Today, we will learn the past continuous tense. Show a video of a person walking in the rainstorm helplessly. Look at the sentence in the picture: “What were people doing at time of the rainstorm?” Ask students to think about the difference between “What were you doing?” and “What are you doing?”Then, point out that they both mean “doing”, but “were” represent a past time, while “are” represent now. 2. Listen to the TV reporter and circle the correct responses in 1a. Listen and number the pictures in 2a. Listen again. Fill in the blanks in the sentences for each picture in 2a. 3. Talk about what people were doing at the time of the rainstorm. Look at the pictures and answer the questions by using “was/were + doing” B: She wasStep 3 ConsolidationGo over the conversation in 2d, and deal with the difficulties in groups.1. Go over the conversation in 2d quickly, if you have any trouble, discuss them in your group. The teacher goes through the classroom and offers help if necessary.2. Read aloud the conversation in pairs.3. Act out their conversations in groups, then in class.4. Language Points: Lead Ss to read the conversation sentence by sentence, explain some language points at the same time.(1). I called you at seven and you didnt pick up. 我七点钟打你电话,你没有接电话。pick up 是英语中的常见短语,在此意为“接收、听到(电台、电话)”pick up 还表示:“拾起、捡起”:He picked up a pen on the road. 他在路上捡了一只钢笔。“接、搭车”:Ill pick you up at the gate tomorrow morning. 明天早晨我会开车在大门口接你。“学会、学到”:He picked up English while he worked in London.(2) Thats strange.strange adj. 奇特的,奇怪的;不可思议的e.g. a strange noise 奇怪的声音 Hes always here; its strange youve never met him. 他经常在这,你却没有见过他,真是不可思议。(3) So, while you were sleeping, I called Jenny and she helped me. 所以当你睡觉的时候,我打电话给詹妮,她帮助了我。 while和when都可以引导时间状语从句,但应注意:while引导的时间状语从句谓语动词必须是延续性动词;而when引导的时间状语从句中的谓语动词既可以是延续性动词,也可以是非延续性动词。当时间状语从句中的谓语动词是延续性动词时,while和when可以互相替换。如: While we were talking, the teacher came in. 我们正谈话时,老师进来了。 The bus had left when we arrived at the bus stop. 当我们到达车站时,公共汽车已经开走了。 when/while we were having a meeting, our teacher came in. 我们正在开会,老师走了进来。(have是延续性动词,因此句中when和while可以替换) Step 4 Summary In this class, first we introduced the topic “What were you doing when the rainstorm came?” Then we brought on the target languagethe past continuous tense. And we distinguished the two conjunction words when and while. Weve also learned some key vocabulary and structures.Step5 Homework 1. Go over the words and phrase.2.
