There he planned to lead a simple life with his wife, Amelia. It was while clearing out the old barn on the far side of the yard that he made an interesting discovery. In a corner, under some old sacks, he found some large fragments (碎片) of an antique bowl. Out of curiosity, he took them into the kitchen and, much to the anger of his wife, washed the mud off them. That evening he spread newspapers over the kitchen table and carefully studied the fragments together. However, two pieces were found missing. Two days later, having pulled down the barn, Mr. Fox was digging over the ground in preparation for the installation (安装) of a greenhouse, when he discovered the two missing pieces. When he had stuck them in position, the bowl looked so fine that Amelia agreed to its being placed on a table in the living room, in front of the window. “We might have something a bit special here,” he said to his wife. A few days later, Jeremy took several photographs of the bowl, which he sent off to Sothebys in London. Unexpectedly, Sothebys was extremely interested in the bowl and sent an expert to inspect it. It turned out that it was a Chinese Ming fish bowl, dating back to around 1500, and might be expected to get a five-figure sum at auction (拍卖). A week later still more unexpectedly, two police officers called and told the Foxes the bowl was stolen property. So the bowl never reached the auction room, and Mr. Fox never received the five-figure sum that had been mentioned. However, he framed one of the photographs he had taken and hung it on the wall.56. CBS picked 1,799 sample drivers to take the test in TV studios in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Los Angeles. More than two out of five of the drivers failed the test. And the average score was the lowest passing mark 51 points out of a possible 80. Chicago drivers did best with an average of 53 points. Los. Angeles drivers came next with 52 points. New York and Philadelphia drivers got 50 points a failing score. Drivers with 50 points or less were rated “poorly informed” by the judges. (C) A single scream shattered (= broke) the morning calm and woke Bernie from a troubled sleep. A car raced past the house. Bernie got up and opened the curtains. A cat lay in the middle of the road, twisted, broken and still. It was not a rare sight on that busy corner. Drivers took more care to avoid dogs, for there was often a value on a dog; farmers and the like might depend on them. But cats were nobodys business really, and there were too many about anyway. It was late that evening that the first faint cries were heard. Nicola, reading in bed, heard them but took little notice. She slept in the back of the house, away from street noises, and there were often fighting cats beneath her window. Next morning, when Bernie woke her for school, there were the cries again, not just one but several together. Nicola stared at her mother. “Theyre kittens,” she cried. “That must have been a mother cat yesterday. The kittens (小猫) are somewhere and theyre hungry.” After school Nicola found the little family in a storeroom beneath the house. The door of this storeroom was always kept shut, but a broken window high in the wall was an invitation to any normal cat. There were six kittens, all very tiny. Four were black and white and two were marmalade. When Nicola bent to pick one up, there was a fierce reaction, and six tiny backs arched in terror. Laughing, she lifted up one of the little things and was surprised at how quickly it grew calm and curious in the warmth of her hand. Its eyes were only half open, and it seemed too weak to stand up. One by one Nicola put them in a cardboard box and took them indoors. “They must be fed at once,” Bernie, said when she saw them. She put some milk on the stove to warm. “Nicky, look for that dolls feeding bottle you used to have. I think its in your cupboard. These little creatures cant drink from a saucer like cats; they have to be fed like babies.” She dipped her fingers in the warm milk and put them to the mouth of each kitten in turn. How they loved it!66. What was the cause of the scream? A. Bernie had a nightmare and woke with a scream. B. A motorcar went too fast round a corner. C. There was a cat-and-dog fight outside. D. When Nicola bent down to the kittens, _. A. they attacked her B. they showed they were afraidC. they welcomed her D. they ran away from herV. 短文改错: Elvis Presley in l955 recorded some songs for his mother 1._birthday.
