The youngest son was called Urashima. He was a kind boy and a clever fisherman. One day he went out in his boat and threw out his line. He didnt catch any fish instead he caught a great tortoise. It had a large hard shell, a funny wrinkled old-man face and a tiny tail. Now, although its face looked old, this tortoise was only a youngster. Urashima, too, knew that the tortoise was no older than he; and he also knew that Japanese tortoises lived for a thousand years. So he thought to himself, Why should I kill it, when there are plenty of fish for me to eat? After all, its got about another nine hundred and eighty-eight years to live yet. It would be cruel to kill it now. So Urashima threw the tortoise back into the sea. After he made the catch, he felt drowsy. So he lay down in his boat in the hot summer sun and went off to sleep. As he slept, a beautiful girl came up from beneath the waves. She climbed into the boat and woke Urashima with a touch of her hand. He stared at her still in surprise.I am the daughter of the Sea God, she said, and I live in the Dragon Palace beyond the sea. I was the tortoise you threw back, for my father sent me in disguise(乔装打扮)to see what you would do. Now my father has sent for you. Yet Americans still consume seven times as much red meat as fish. Only about one in five eats the recommended two servings of seafood per week. Why dont we take the plunge more often? By now, youve heard that seafood offers far-ranging health benefits, but youve also heard that some fish contain high levels of toxins(毒素), leaving you to wonder if all the white meat at your grocers seafood counter is truly safe. So what is fishmiracle food or health threat? If you eat a modest amount of fish, you dramatically decrease your risk of dying from a heart attack. Findings from 30 large studies conducted around the world show that people who consume just one or two servings of fish per week lower their risk of a fatal heart attack by an average of 36 percent. But its not just your heart that benefits when you dine on sea fare. Your brain does too. Fish lovers suffer fewer strokes(中风), cutting their risk by 40 percent in some studies. And mounting evidence suggests that omega-3 fatty acids help the brain with its normal, day-to-day function. A 2007 study of nearly 12,000 pregnant women found that children born to mothers who ate more than 12 ounces of seafood per week during pregnancy scored six points higher on tests of IQ than kids born to mothers who had other foods on the menu. As for adults, a recent Swedish study found that young men who ate fish more than once a week scored nearly 11 percent higher on IQ tests than males who rarely ate seafood. And in later years, fish eaters appear to be less likely to develop dementia(痴呆). And more advantages may be reported in years to come: Scientists are studying whether fish helps prevent or treat other disorders. 45.All the following have been recommended by doctors EXCEPT _.A. reducing red meat consumption B. having sea food twice every weekC. eating fish seven times the amount of red meat D. consuming enough white meat during pregnancy46.The relevant studies show that_.A. fish contain high levels of toxins B. a fatty acid in sea food helps brain function C. children of fish-eaters always have high IQ D. sea food doesnt benefit non-pregnant females47.The risks of the following can be lowered EXCEPT _, if one eats sea food regularly.A. dementiaB. strokeC. poisoningD. heart attack 48.The passage is mainly about _. There is one extra heading which you do not need.A. Trial period B. Danger of the cityC. Funds from industryD. Not what it appears to be E. Prevention of road accidents F. New safety awareness project49. It is a typical urban scene. Two cars are parked close together at the roadside and a child is attempting to cross the road from between them. Down the street, another car comes belting along. Houses flank the pavements and around the corner there is a brightly-lit petrol station.50.It is all extraordinarily realistic, but it is unreal. For the difference between this and thousands of similar locations throughout the country is that this street is indoors it is a mock-up(实体模型)designed by studio set-builders from Anglia Television.51. We are standing inside a converted warehouse in Milton Keynes, home of a project which is the blueprint for an exciting new way of teaching children safety awareness, especially road safety. It is called Hazard Alley. If the centre proves successful and, having visited it, I am convinced it will, then its imaginative approach could easily be copied throughout the country.52. The project was started by the local authority in association with the police. The finance came from commercial sponsorship(赞助)by companies including Coca-cola, Volkswagen and Anglia TV. There is already a catchy cartoon character mascot(吉祥物)for the centre: Haza, the Hazard Alley cat. 53. Hazard Alley is preparing its official opening, and the local schools which have experienced it so far have been testing out the centre before it launches into a full programme of group visits. It is already proving immensely popular. Eventually it may open to individual family groups. When that happens, it will be well worth a day trip: children will love it and they could learn something which may save their lives. Section DDirections: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words. For centuries, scientists have sought a clear explanation for laughter. One writer said that its function is to make something known or to gain fame over others. Another took the opposite view: we laugh in order not to cry. Laughter is an emotional response, showing ones feelings of joy, involving characteristic sounds of the voice and movements of the features and the body. Speech is the spoken expression of symbols and the relations between symbols. With the development of speech, the number of occasions producing sudden experiences of pleasure increased, and since laughter was closely associated with speech, man had this means of expressing his pleasure. Man could express with laughter what other animals could not. Since the lower animals had no speech, they met fewer pleasurable situations and furthermore, were unable to laugh. Laughter gradually became established as mans ability and therefore, it survived. Now it is well-known that laughter has a refreshing effect on the mind and body, giving the body a feeling of well-being that few other activities are able to provide. The smile comes before laughter, as shown clearly by the infant who can smile after six days, but can only laugh at twelve weeks. By the twelve-week state he becomes a comparatively well-developed creature, although not much differently equipped physically than he was at six days. At twelve weeks, although he cannot speak, he begins to understand the general meaning and tone of human sounds, and the dawn of the smile becomes the bright noonday sunlight of clear laughter. Therefore, we may again connect the origin of laughter with the origin of speech, as indicated by the gradual development of these two capacities in the human infant. You are laughing because man learned to speak and therefore to laugh, and because nature confers benefits on the animal capable of laughter.Answer the questions or complete the statements with NO MORE THAN 13 WORDS. 54. When one is laughing, you can hear sounds of his pleased voice and see _. 55. Why can man laugh while other animals can not?56. What effect does laughter have? 57. A 12-week-old infant can laugh because _.第II卷I. Blank fillingDirections: Complete the sentences with the proper form of the phrases g
